Stray Cats Digging in Your Gardens?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

They have even dug into my containers! In the last issue of Organic Gardening, another gardener had a great idea, and I plan on using it.

She takes Chicken type wire (with fairly large holes) and lays it down in her gardens (I'm going to use it in my pots too). You can sow the seed in the holes, and the plants will grow over the wire, covering it up. But the cats can't stand the wire and will go find someplace else.

I thought this was a really neat idea and wanted to share it with you. Right now there is dirt all over my front porch because of my containers becoming the neighborhood litter boxes. NO MORE! :)

That's a good idea. There's a thread over in the pets forum about this very topic, too! You should mention this there, too - bet it would be welcome advice.

My dog could help with the cat poo problem, too...Ugh. We just had a one of those "if you don't laugh, you'll scream" incidents, which I wrote about in my blog: http://gardenwife.com/mt/archives/000478.html

LOL!

(ya know, years ago when I lived by myself I had a cat that only went "outdoors" kinda like a dog! Kissed my nose in the morning to let her out......... never really thought about where she was going, actually........) Although my apartment always smelled nice and clean.

I am getting those chicken wires!

My cat prefers to dig in the mulched pathways. It's the squirrels that dig and disrupt my garden beds, spring especially, looking for forgotten buried nuts. It's almost as bad in the fall but seldom in the summer.

Oh darius! we have the same problem! there are alot of wild cats around here (and more are born every year!). Their favorite place to do the doodoo is on the edges of my mulched paths...therefore, as you work along the path on your hands and knees....ew ew ew ew! It's disgusting! They cover it up so you can't see it until it's slathered all over your knees! YUCK! Help! any suggestions?

If you stick a bunch of bamboo skewers in your pots, that should keep the cats out. You can get the skewers in the cooking supplies section of the grocery store. Stick them in as far as you can, but leave an inch or more above the soil level. The cats won't hurt themselves. They'll just find out that the digging is not easy and they'll move along.
