I need a name soon :)

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Okay, I went to the Humane Society this afternoon and adopted a cat. A 2 yo "tortoiseshell" very lovable, and purrs like crazy. Also, appears to be a good mouser. :)

I need a name and hoped that someone here could help me out with some names. I know how creative all of you are. She is a sweet cat and very well behaved.

Her name that they gave her is Baby Kitty and that's just not working for me. LOL

Thanks, Kathy

North Tonawanda, NY(Zone 3a)

Maybe the name of a flower or plant? We had a rabbit called Petunia (who turned out to be male,LOL). My Dad picked the name and we never let him live that one down.

(Zone 5b)

We went through so many names before I finally started calling my tortoiseshell Fido. Funny, but not quite right for her. I'm thinking Lulu would have been perfect but it's a little late now that we've had her for a year. My son says how about Patches.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh, congratulations on the new addition to your family!

I've been thinking on a name for awhile Kathy. Can you post a picture? I'm not coming up with anything, but a picture of her may spark something.

What were your first thoughts when you saw her? What inspired you to adopt her?

I ask this because my absolute best buddy came to me because he was a full grown cat and the neighbors moved a couple miles away and he would not stay at the new place. He kept coming back. One day I was working in the garden and he was in the trees meowing. I started talking to him about what a bummer it was that his family moved away and he didn't like it. Soon he was coaxed up on the deck so we could feed him, then into the house when it stormed, and now13 years later, he sleeps on his own pillow between DH and I, and sits on a matching pillow at my feet when I'm in the office. We call him Bummy, after what I said to him about it being a Bummer that his family moved away and he didn't want to go. It fits him perfectly and I can't imagine his name being anything different.

This isn't a great picture because I just leaned down and snapped it, interrupting his evening bath, and not giving him time to prepare to be published.

Hee hee - love how Bummy got his name!

Kathy, I think kitties kind of name themselves. Don't be shocked if your new little girl tells you some really weird name; they do that sometimes!

But Joan's right, we need pictures to truly tune into her feline vibe and even offer suggestions (to her).

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Although I like the idea of a plant/flower, it is true that pets kinda name themselves.

Have fun with your new kitty! I love mine!

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

I've got a calico looking baby, well sort of, LOL. Anyway she adopted us about three years ago. Just came into the yard half starved, I fed her and she kept me ;)

I called her Shadow at first because she acted like my shadow in the garden and with her multi colored coat, she looked like a shadow sitting on the ground. If you didn't know you were looking at her you almost didn't even see her, she blends in with the landscape very well.

But... my DH had a different reaction to her. He started calling her moocher which led to minnie the moocher, LOL. So thats her name, minnie (and DH still occasionally adds the "moocher" to it, LOL)

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

How about Blessing or Precious. Or naming her for someone you like. All our cats animals have people names.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

I discovered a while back that Tortie's remind me of coffee because of their colorings...

Mocha
Latte

Or, since she is a Tortoiseshell colored feline ..

Turtle :)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

herkamer or piewacket are my favorites!

my niece named her cat-richard cranium
think of nicknames for that-richard=______!
and cranium=head

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

A schoolfriend of mine called his cat "Pussposperous".

What a daft name, but none of us have ever forgotten it.

Wintermeaow

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Love Bummer's story and picture. My cat was a throw-away kitten rescued on a construction site. He was SO TINY and my Mother always just called him Kitty. When he approched 10 pounds we added Tom to his name. Now he is 24 pounds, named TomKitty (A/K/A BadCat)

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I had a tortoiseshell, named her Patches. She was such a good kitty girl.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

We had a beautiful tortoise shell kitty that we called Kitchen. It was a play on the word "kitten", and she was always in the kitchen, so....

notmartha, where does the name "herkamer" come from? The husband of a friend of mine used to always call her babies Herkamer before they were born. I thought it was a made-up name, and now you say it's one of your favorites?

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, some sad news...:( It seems either my daughter or granddaughter left the door open early this morning when my GD was going to the school bus. We can't find kitty anywhere. I had a doctor appt and DH had to watch the babies, but now I am home, he is in the pouring rain looking for her ....pray that we find her. I had thought of Precious, BTW, leaf....because she is precious. I also thought of cuddles because all night long whenever I got up, she ran to me and jumped in my lap and cuddled me and purred.

I love all these names. If I can't find her, I will get another kitty, but not until my daughter and her children move out!

Edited to say....We found her, we found her. She was not outside after all. She had gone into a portion of the wall behind our bathtub that was not blocked off. It appears like something frightened her. When I can get ahold of her, I will hug and cuddle her. :)

So now back to the name thingy.....

How about Pumpkin or Skeeziks or Hortense?

Lenexa, KS(Zone 5b)

I have two calicos, tortoise-shells, with black/gray/orange markings on their backs and heads, and primarily white bellies and legs. One has different color patches on the knee area of each leg, hence her name Patches. The other is a total lap kitty, especially when she was little. You couldn't hardly sit down and she'd be trying to get in your lap. Her name is Cuddles.

My aunt had a a couple darker colored calicos name Cocoa and Callie. Oh, and we had one little kitten when I was younger that seemed to have unusually large ears and reminded us at the time of a character from the movie Gremlins, so we named him Gizmo.

I like Patches and Callie. My diluted calico is Ginger. My niece helped me pick her out and name her. We were on the phone and she couldn't think of a name. She started naming everything in the kitchen - napkin, salt tissues.... I am so thankful my SIL had some ginger in the kitchen.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I like the name Peebles (remember the old cartoon, Magilla Gorilla, with Peebles Pet Store and Mr. Peebles?).

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Since she went behind the wall maybe her name is Wallice or Wallah or Wallie?

Or since she hides she might be Hidey

Twila? Was she behind the Tile-a?

Of the above, my vote would be Turtle. Anyone else read The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver? Of course that Turtle was a stray child, not kitty, but Turtle and tortoiseshell do fit together. Lionel named himself. The very night that I decided no one was going to claim him as their own, I was talking to a friend who told me that our long-ago mutual friend Lionel had died the previous year. After getting off the phone, there I was, lying on the couch with this huge red cat on my chest, sobbing and saying, "Oh, dear Lionel....." Said huge red cat did that little purr/talk thing they do every time I said Lionel. I asked him if he wanted to be Lionel and he was so sincere in his response that that was that. He has a last name too. A few months ago another old acquaintance passed away, Raymond Foo, a superb arranger of flowers. I like the idea of keeping a dear one's name around to remind me of their presence. So Lionel is also Mr. Foo. The perfect name will come.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

SCUSE ME FOKESSSS!!!

Misty Meadows told you DAYYYYYS ago that the wee puss was gone ... SO!! ... me being a true bread Scotsman and great referee (AHEM ... yes! .. I AM)

I would call the wee cat, if she were to come back ... _

PUSSOFSKI ... TARAAAAAAAA!!! the name has been found foakz!!

Wintername

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

She also edited the post saying she found her behind the wall of the tub.
So now we can keep on with the naming.

I once had a cat I called Pebbles. She was a calico also.
I like Kassie too.
or KiKi
or Tessie
or Ginger

It might take a while for her to actually come when she's called too. You might want to try calling the names out loud and see if she looks like a "_____"

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

I am really thinking over some of these names, thanks for all your input. We got her out from behind the wall now and put up some cardboard so she won't go back. I want her to know where her food and potty are. :)

Wintermoor, a great name, but a bit long. LOL

HeatherV, that is almost exactly the colors of my kitty. She appears to have a purple hue to her, if that makes sense. I think it is the gray....She has what appears to be socks or boots on her two hind paws.

I usually don't have this much trouble naming a pet....perhaps I've had so many, I've run out of names. ha, ha

I will let you know what I decide and I need to soon. She is to go to the vet on Friday and I'll have to come up with something. :) K

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

Lionel first went to the vet as "Red Cat." He didn't find his name for at least a month. She'll enlighten you, with either a look, a sound or some memory that pops into your head. I can't wait to hear what she decides and see a picture.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 5b)

How about a formal name of Puss in Boots then, and just call her Puss for short? My dad had a cat named Puss. He also had this dainty little stray cat with an attitude that sort of just adopted him and became the queen of the castle so to speak, just named Miss Kitty.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

If I can get her to hold still long enough, I will surely post a picture. She is sitting on the back of my computer chair right now, which is high and I wonder how she can just stay there, it is a swivel chair also. :) I like the name Ms Kitty. hmmmm

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We've had cats named Merlin, Smudge, and Promise. Our cats now are Elliott, Mr. Higgins (aka Higgy) and Hattie. They really do just seem to name themselves.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Besides Bummy, we also have Porky, who came to us as an orphaned kitten who wasn't even old enough to eat food. We fed him with an eye dropper for a long while and he ate like a pig.

Then we have Bug, who came to us via a box at the local livestock auction ring. DD brought her home. She got her name because she bugged us all the time. :)

Bug got pregnant and gave birth to 4 kittens that were named Cricket, Weevil, Beetle and Spider. Beetle and Spider were adopted by our Public Health Nurse, and were renamed Louis and Clark. She named them that because they made the big journey from our home to hers. We still have Cricket and Weevil with us.

Verona, ON

Don't make the mistake I did Kathy - years ago I got a kit from a neighbour who assured me it was a girl.He has farmed for over 60 years so I assumed he would know what sex the cat was - guess dairy cows' sexual orientation are easier to determine! I promptly named it "Maggie May" 'cause I love that song. Took wee kit off to the vet and quickly became the laughing stock of the whole office - me someone who has been around animals large and small all of her life did not bother to check - Maggie May is now Cricket and neutered!
I agree that cats seem to name themselves. They all seem to have some quirk or trait that just lends itself to a name. DH says don't bother naming a cat they won't come when they are called anyway. Shows how much he knows about cats! So glad you got yourself a wee kit to love and cuddle.Looking forward to hearing the name. D

Schriever, LA(Zone 9a)

Congrats on the new addition to your family :) I adopted a kitten from the shelter and promptly named her Pandora (Pandy, Panda). The (Greek?) legend of Pandora is about a girl who was very curious about what was in a box and was warned not to open it. Well, curiosity got the better of her and she did open the box, which happened to be a Box of Troubles, which she released into the world. Take it from me...NEVER name a cat Pandora! LOL. Pandora is almost grown up now and is actually very sweet and charming. I guess the point is that I like mystical, mythological, or very old fashioned names. You might consider something along those lines. Here is Pandora.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Oh I wish I could see the picture of Pandora, but with the window in front of the picture taker, it darkened the rest :( I sort of like the name Pandora too....

Dianne, I have a doggie named Maggie, I call her Maggie Mae sometimes (I love the Rod Stewart song also), but mostly I call her Magpie. :)

This has been so much fun to read of the all the names of your pets. Keep them coming, because I'm still undecided. :)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 5b)

Reading about Pandora made me think about a cat my friend had in high school. When they got her, she was this tiny little all white kitten, and they named her Tinkerbell, usually calling her Tink for short. Well, when she grew up, I think she must have weighed more than 15 pounds- nothing tiny about her at all anymore!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I had a tortie I named Charlie. She was a very feline feline stray cat, attitude problem and all, but I earned her trust and she earned mine and I thought she deserved a strong name. Charlie can be female sometimes and she was definitely a stray cat tomboy type. Sometimes I called her Charlie, sometimes Charlie Kitty and sometimes nyow nyow because that was her signature meow.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Okay, I've made my decision.......Introducing Cleo....the new addition to Misty Meadows Farm...:) Thanks for all your help people. This is the first thing I thought of when I saw her, which just goes to prove, you should go with your gut instincts. :)

Perfect !

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Perfect name for a beautiful kitty!

Welcome to DG Cleo!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It has the squeaky voice quality all cats should have...What a cute kitty!

"Cleeeeeeo! Cleeeeeo!"

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

GW, that's funny. She does squeak too, just about the time I'm ready to go to bed........

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I can just hear it! :) You know what I mean about the pronunciation...

Hattie becomes "Hyateee ceeeyat!"
Elliott is "Elllllliottt!"
and Higgins is "Heeeeeeegeeeeeeeens!"
