what do the leaves look like? Do they ever show any kind of mold-looking stuff on them?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

no, the leaves are always big and georgious, like there's gonna be beautiful radishes undeaneath, then I pull them up and have these nasty greyish colored gross looking things. don't know if it's some kind of grub or something missing in the dirt, I don't think it's a bug or something because it's everyone of them that are that nasty color

Gosh, I've never seen that before. Does it look like they are infested with bugs/worms or something?

I had looked in a book and found that downy mildew can (in advanced stages) can cause the roots to become dis-colored, so just wondered about that.

Maybe you can grow some this year in another area? Or make a separate boxed bed just for root crops and put in a good soil mix?

Now I thought of downy mildew on the radishes, I've grown them every year in a diff spot in my garden, same as always, it's disgusting, I can't have home grown radishes, last year though, I did have this old tractor tire, I layered real good potting soil, peet moss, leaves etc, in it, and the radishes were perfect in there, but man, my garden is half an acre, i't s real aggrivating.

I agree, that sure would be a headache to always have them turn out gray!

Maybe someone else will chime in here with some suggestions. I'd like to figger this out!

If they are kind of a bluish/black, this might help:

It's long, so just go to pages 21 and 22; look at Black Root
