DH used our new chipper to shred up our leaves last fall. I spread the leaf mulch over my perennial beds in an effort to keep down winter weeds. The mulch is between one and two inches deep. Should it be removed in the spring or can I leave it in place?
One bed has coneflowers, blackeyed susans, gerbera daisies, coreopsis, liatris, alliums and daylilies. The other bed has foxglove, painted daisies, lily of the valley, and columbine.
Should I remove leaf mulch?
I'd sure leave it where it is. It's a a good source of organinic material.
I agree with Bob, I did the same thing last year and the plants came thru with no problem at all. Plus in my veggie beds I just worked it into the soil with my garden claw(small beds) and didnt have to worry about moving anything.
Thanks guys, that's what I thought but was concerned that it might delay the plants coming up in the spring as I had read that it kept the ground temperature cooler as the weather warms up. Nat
I too mulch with leaves and leave them where they are. It is a wonderful source of humus.
