Jody, my experience is limited, last year being the first that I tried a few hanging planters for myself. I did some baskets of nasturtiams and alyssium, and some of begonias. This year I am going to do some Black Eyed Susan Vine(Alata something) and lobelia.I know petunias are popular, especially the wave type.Portulaca is nice too.I'd like to do some that has the thick suculent leaves, but don't know where to get the seed. Pretty much anything that spreads will do well in a hanging basket.
Some of our professional gardeners should have lots more info for you. Good luck! :>)

At the markets here, the wave petunias and "nasty urchins"-esp. the ones with varigated leaves, are popular. For filler, the annual lobelias like Crystal Palace and shorter varieties of artemesia are used, as are Vinca vines and the blue/green cypress vine .
. The baskets of the hanging geraniums are also popular..Good luck on your venture.

I always do a few for my porch and use vinca - I love the way they blow in the wind. I quit using the large flowered petunias because of the wind I get almost daily. It shreds them to bits! Not pretty! I like Snow Storm too. If you do some with smaller flowers, you could point out to buyers that they would do well in windy spots. :)

We had good luck with Ramblin Petunias & Tornado Geraniums.
Both are avaible from www.harrisseeds.com.
They stayed nice all year. We sold about 150 10" baskets.
The petunias for $13.99 & the geraniums for $15.99.
