keeping snakes away

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

is there anything that will keep
away blacksnakes from the garden area?
someone told me snakes won't crawl
over a garden hose, LIES!!!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

IS there something wrong with blacksnakes? I have small ones in my soil and I try not to bother them too much. I'm told they are good for the garden. As a matter of fact there is one in the corner behind the hibiscus, I stop and wish him a good day every day.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

Mollymac, they give me the
hebejeebies....should I ever
get the nerve to catch one
should I send it your way? haha

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Sure......if you dare.....mmmuuuuuuuuuuaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaa.

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

I don't like any snakes, but I'll take
a Blacksnake any day over what we have.
DIAMONDBACK RATTLE SNAKES!!!!! Last one we killed was in Oct. 14 rattles & a button.

Believe me if there was something to
keep snakes away I would have it!!!!

blacksnakes will keep the rodents out of your gardens, they will go right down into the holes and clean them out for you. I have garter snakes around the yard and when I know where they like to hang out, I warn people that they are there to avoid startling anyone.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Yer right Kathleen. I have convinced my neighbor not to kill his black snakes and he's agreed. Now, if I can just convince my greyhound to leave them alone, we'll be fine. The greyhound kills rodents too, (Wonder if she thinks the snakes are threatening her job security? LOL)

For those of us who do not invite
snakes in our yards, I did find
a product, it's called snake away.
found it at lowes, the main ingred.
is sulfur. I got two containers..

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

Nice to meet you dellar! I live across the James River from you. :o) Sulfur has been known to deter snakes, but I've also heard that once it rains you will have to reapply it again.

Hi Carol,
You are indeed across the *creek*
with all the building going on in
the area, you know the snakes and such
have to go somewhere, NOT my yard.
I will reapply snake away daily if
need be, and Gardenwife the site
you referred was very interesting
thanks for taking the time to send
info.

We have copperheads in our hills and hollers. Snakes in the garden are scary! I try to grow my cucumber up on trellis now.

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

Dellar, I don't care for snakes either so please don't send any across the *creek* to me! lol Snakes are going to go where there is food and water, so if you are seeing them on a regular basis there is something in the area that they are looking for, or if you are in or nearby a new subdivision it will eventually settle down. I know the latter isn't much help.
Do you have any pets? They can also be a great help. The cat we adopted last year is a good mouser and my border collies will try to herd any black snake that comes into the yard from our woods.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

lewisburg,
have you ever heard of
prestonsburg??
thats where I entered
the world..

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

bluegrass, it's a small world.
I remember as a child having
to pick blackberries for
my grandmother and fighting
the blacksnakes off.
They were everywhere in them
hills...Miss Ky but not
the snakes....

Have you tired a nice sign, "No snakes allowed"?

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

magglemoo
only in Texas can you find humor
in every aspect of life. You
folks are the greatest...
Maybe the sign sould say.
if you can read this sign
you're too close..haha

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I hate snakes in the yarden too. We have found that peacocks will kill them with glee. Guinea fowl will make so much noise any time they see a snake that the snakes will usually stay out of the yarden. Snake Away is nothing but high priced mothballs. Read the labels.

Newport News, VA(Zone 7a)

leaflady,
looks like another trip to lowes
for moth balls. Maybe I should
just invest in a pair of stilts
like the construction workers wear.
I just had a mental laugh, can
you imagine trying to run in those
things...
