Literal Web Translations

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

If you've ever searched on the web for a plant, only to find that all the info is in another language with an offer of 'translation', you've probably had a good laugh or two like I have. The literal translation from another language into English can be quite amusing: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.lejardindesophie.net/liste%2520des%2520plantes/dc1/campan%2520latif%2520mac.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dcampanula%2Blatifolia%2Bv%2Bmacrantha%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff I particularly like 'small bells with the armpit of the sheets' LOL!

LOL. Oh, that is so funny! As it is not a flower I recognize, what is it really trying to say?

That is a funny one. wonder if they are trying to say it stinks or smells like used sheets!

This is some variation of Great Bellflower, a tall campanula, but I have no idea what they are trying to say. It's really rather entertaining to look plants up on translatible sites. It illustrates how odd English must sound when literally translated. Here we have a 'wash and wear plant': http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.master-stauden.de/html/auswahl/eti_sol/centaure.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3DCentaurea%2Bmacrocephala%26start%3D20%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

Cool! with our rainy weather a wash and wear plant would make it so much easier than having to iron them.

By the way, I hope you are having a wonderful Birthday!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Zany. So far, so good! It's still morning here... 10:15 am, so my birthday stretches before me... the possibilities are infinite!... well varied, anyway!

Here's a particularly good one I found for German Catchfly: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.florijardin.fr/p38.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3DLychnis%2Bviscaria%26start%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

Happy birthday, Carol!

Gosh, I'm glad they pointed out the plant is pink-dyed. I bet it's not wash and wear, then.

You guys would like http://engrish.com

Oh, that's a hoot, GW! It would be a great new campaign for the first lady... a war on cuteness with the slogan 'Cuteness Kills'.
