I am planning on putting in Bougainvillea on two sides of a screened in porch to create a privacy screen and I have been warned by many about the thorns. Are there less thorny types that anyone is aware of and does anyone know if they would rip the screening? I may have to opt for some of the ideas from the other privacy thread if they are too brutal on screens.
Bougainvillea - less thorny types?
Well, I continued my search and found part of my answer. Now I have to figure out if the thorny species will damage screens if it climbs near/on it.
B. glabra has smooth leaves and smaller and fewer thorns while B. spectablilis leaves are hairy beneath. Flowers are small yellow-white tubes surrounded by three papery bracts responsible for the brilliant display. B. glabra covers less thorny canes with blossoms in late winter to early summer with intermittent displays throughout the season. B. spectabilis rampant growth can quickly reach 30 feet, B. glabra will reach to about 20 feet at best.
