Iced In?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hah! What a picture, GW! I bet he kept his chin up the whole slide down!

Elaine! Yes, a strange year. You mean you're not affected by this winter weather? Heck, you're nearly in Alaska.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

AHHHHH Molly did you have to? Picki'n tar out of 2 feet of blonde hair is going to take a while. We could go outside and let it melt, I suppose.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Snow is over here for now. We got about 4-6". Fluffy & came over 20 hours so didn't stop much. Some schools closed & some ran late. There was a lot more snow north & west from here.
It's all heading east so I hope it doesn't end up on top of what you guys have already!
I hate that ice. About 4 years ago we had a ½" or so. After about 2 weeks they used some kind of disk thing to break it up on the gravel roads. They were almost impossible to drive on.
Well spring can't be to far off!

Wow, didn't know another storm was coming! Was getting ready to head for dreamland when all of a sudden sleet staring pelting the house like crazy. Looks like the kids could be off of school again tomorrow. And.....it is thundering and lightening out, about 22 degrees out. Strangest thing. Tried to paste TWC Doppler for you. Can't believe it! Better shut down, nitey nite folks. Hope we don't lose power again. :) Kathy

Yesterday, after I decided to spend the day at home, I checked our weather bulletin for work again. By mid-afternoon, they were reporting that all employees were dismissed to go home at noon, with afternoon shifts cancelled.

So, that means, if I had gone in, I would have arrived around 10, struggling through treacherous conditions, just to be sent home two hours later! ARGH!

Glad I stayed at home, but the same report this morning -two hour delay on the bulletin as of a half hour ago. Will they do the same thing again today?!

Jennifer, I don't know about your county but in Spartanburg county, yesterday, they had 1500 reported traffic accidents in 19 hours and 6 fatalities. STAY HOME! DD did make it in this morning but she said it was not fun and she plans on leaving by 4:00 to be home before dark!

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

We got the ice storm here in northern Ohio last night. It had been raining all day. Then about 2am we had a thunderstorm ! Very atyplical for Ohio. The whole sky lit up with lightening too. Then came the sleet, followed by a little hail. This morning everything is a solid sheet of ice. Everything is closed. The weather report said we should get about 4" of snow on top of the ice as the day wears on. YUK ! (That is my winter word - yuk...)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It was still 40 here last night when I drove home at midnight. The fog was so thick, it LOOKED like a blizzard, but we never did get anything else. Whew!

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

We received 3"-4" of snow before it changed to sleet and freezing rain. DH had covered front half of his truck with a tarp so he could go to work in the morning. He made it there safely, but spent most of the day sitting in the office. After Isabel most of the trees that had not fallen were cut back away from the power lines so we didn't have many power outages. When he came home from work VDOT had done a great job clearing the main roads and they were practically dry in our county. We had a bit of rain last night and we won't go above freezing today, so the roads are icy again. Since I don't have to go out, I'm staying put until tomorrow.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

This my second day of being housebound, but tomorrow is supposed to get to 40ºF and hopefully melt the ice.

Jan thought she could get her lightweight Geo Tracker out of our driveway below the house yesterday. Dumb move. Instead, she slid backwards down the hill about 100 feet, stopping only when she hit the trash cans belonging to a neighbor.

Fortunately the tow truck was able to pull her back up the hill and to a neighbor's driveway almost at the top of the hill, so she may get out at some point later today.

It will have to thaw a lot for me to get my pickup out of the driveway and up the hill to the road.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

schools are closed and we are in a bad storm belt here!!!
They are saying 7-10 or 6-9 depends on weather station!
This is just CRAZY! We are getting a winter mix right now-sleet and snow-there are accidents everywhere!

I know spring will come-but this cabin fever is about to go off the chartz!!!!!!!

Stay home, stay safe and stay warm!
dori
trying to stay san here! lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well I feel better now! Sorry you two. I did speak to soon though, if it makes you feel any better. LOL Our low for today was 19 and the expected high is 33. We just got a fresh inch and the roads are slick.

Is it almost March???

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well school was put on a 1 hr delay and then 15 minutes later changed to a day off. It is snowing as I type and just a cold, cold day. Good day for soup and cookie making :) Enjoy and be safe, Kathy :)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I slid my way into work today and it was quite a trip over the mountains. Worse part was the ice on the windshield. Why is it I never replace the wiper blades till too late? And the thermostat decided to switch to cool about 3/4 of the trip. Now need to get ready to head home through the same stuff and then more snow!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We had that lightning storm come through after I was just getting to sleep, so around 4:30 or 5:00am. One tremendous flash and BOOM is what I most remember - so strange when the weather is cold like this.

What little glaze of ice we did get melted. It is windy outside and 24F right now. I guess some more snow showers are expected, but nothing major.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

The snow we got earlier has melted already. LOL Looks like I can make it to the midwife after all. Darn, I wanted to stay home and be lazy. :)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

57 early till 3:30 yesterday Bill, and we plummeted from there.....no kidding the temps dropped from 41 to 33 in the eight minutes it took me to pick up the kids from school. Woke up this morning to a balmy 19F.....now back into the 40's.....this crazy stuff is making me ill, literally.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Be careful Candee - South Mountain is a bear today. One of my employees got hit by a snow plow truck coming down from Hagerstown today - she's shaken, but OK.

It is NASTY here folks!

Well I did something rather stupid! I thought Woodstock and I could go out for a short little jaunt. NOT! Her little legs splayed in all four directions and I'm all bent over trying to figure out how to get the next step in. Then I went to check the mail - yeah right....Haven't seen mail since Saturday. When the weather is bad, the south closes!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

The mail will wait!! Get you and the pup back inside on terra firma :)

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

eyes: I know what you mean! Mid-afternoon the winds got up as high as 37 MPH and the temperature dropped over 30 degrees down to 22 degrees last night. Brrr. Now it's sunny and warming again. Crazy.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Today -30F, -52F with windchill...week and a half ago we had rain...I want SPRING!! If I didn't have to work I'd be hibernating right now.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Well, work was closed for the day. I stayed in the house all during the daylight hours, cooking soup, decorating some walls, painted a coat rack... even started a little scrapbook project.

Then I realized I only had a quarter tank of gas, and will probably have work tomorrow. So I ventured out, in a BIG circle from my neighborhood, checking road conditions, and got gas.

WHAT A MESS! One direction from my neighborhood was a little bad, but in the other, it's horrid! Bends are icy, intersections are horrid, not to mention the hills. I was just telling Mom on the phone, "it's not like the road crews don't know those hills are there. The roads been here for years! Why not toss sand down while it was day-light out, and while the traffic was low?" They didn't do ANYTHING out there. Holy moley! I made it safe, but I believe that is only because I let a frantic speedy driver go past me, and didn't go over 35 mph the whole trip.

I'm glad to have learned how to drive in bad weather when I lived in PA. Otherwise, I would have learned from people here - go really, really, really fast, brake only when necessary, and *slam* on the brakes when possible. It's no wonder there were over 2000 wrecks Sun-Mon in the area.

I'm gonna hide inside tonight, catch up with some good TV re-runs, hot cocoa, and my snuggly kitties. :) Ya'll stay safe out there... drive slow, tread gently, and brake easy.

-Jennifer

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Oh, it don't help to live in the snow belt. Friday morning there was a light snow in Mpls-St.Paul area, they raked up 500 fender benders. Yesterday more modest snowfall (6") went better, only 150 in the morning rush hour.
People think the 4 wheelers can go anywhere, any speed, not!
Snow stopped Monday afternoon, cold came behind with nice NW wind. It was -10º this morning. Got to a balmy Zero this afternoon. Back down tonight. Snow again tomarrow. Getting a lot of bookwork done!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, our roads are terrible and it is still snowing. Not much sticking, but enough to make a mess. They have called off school for tomorrow. (and it is only 9:00 p.m. the night before!, perhaps some irate parents called in after their last few misjudgements!) Everyone be safe. It appears to have pretty much crippled everyone east of the Mississippi and a few west of it. Spring, come upon us soon.

Hey all, Groundhog day is in 6 days. Let's hope Puxatawny Phil doesn't see his shadow. I'm ready for nice weather.

Happy Day and Night, Kathy :)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Another day sledding w/DD...I must confess, I put my rubber boots on today. Wore a callus on the top of my foot where they rubbed. Now I hurt from head to toe. (It didn't help when DD put the dachshund up my back as I was laying down on the sled, getting ready for "one last ride".) Anyway, if this weather don't thaw out soon, tomorrow when I put the boots on, I'm gonna try wearing socks also. Maybe that will help.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Socks and shoes go together like soup and sandwich :) I can't imagine wearing shoes/boots without socks. I barely wear my slippers without socks. LOL

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

We got another five inches on top of the foot or so we had and then it rained some so we are back down to about a foot of sticky WET snow with ice underneath it in our yard but the road is slush. Expect rain again the next couple of days then snow then rain. *sigh* We sure need the moisture but I have never seen it like this here before. Temps will be in the high 30s low 40s daytime and in the low 20s at night so I am sure there will be closed roads and slide-offs the next few days.

Stay safe and don't try to get there fast.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Headed home about 3 yesterday Shirley and waited too long. My defrosters gave out and the ice was just freezing on the windshield and couldn't see. Had to stop 4 times and scrape it off which was precarious on ole 40 which is the way I travel. Finally just 2 miles from Hagerstown they kicked back on and by then it was really snowing again. The last time I pulled over was at those antique shops on 40 just outside Hagerstown across from Radamar estates and I couldn't see anything at the point that I stopped. I also had to pull into the Sheetz at Beaver Creek. Boy, was I glad to get in my driveway!!!
Now again today after a few more inches of snow yesterday afternoon and eve, here I am back in Frederick again! At least the sunshine is trying to poke through today although the winds will probably cause a lot of drifting.
Sounds like everyone here on the east coast is having a difficult time of things this January.
Everyone please be extra careful and don't go out unless absolutely necessary. Stay safe!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

we are snowed in again today-we got last i knew anyway 8inches of new snow yesterday-a layer somewhere under that is ice and then came the wind-blowing and drifting!
its a winter wonderland here-will get some more pics today!
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Good Point Dori, Even though the snow and ice are a real pain in the neck, the beauty is astounding. Stay Warm!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Jennifer, the thing is that in the south, we don't want to learn to drive in ice!! we want everything to close so we can stay home and play:) it's all a ruse for an extra vacation.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Shoe - I was wondering if you had weakened and put on shoes for the winter - you must be really tough! All this nasty weather talk just reminds me why my Mom & I moved from Ill. to Orlando in 1959 and never looked back. All that stuff is pretty in pictures, but I never want to face it again. I do feel for all of you that are stuck in it - Atlanta is far enough North for me! They say we may get some snow about Feb 6th, but so often the predictions are wrong - not one flake has come our way yet this year. There have been some icy roads and power outages on the north side of town, but none here, just 40 mi south.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Finally the sun is shining again here!

It's already up to 21º with a forecast high of 38º so perhaps my uphill driveway will thaw enough for me to get out today. Yippee!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Sun is looking down on us too, darius. So far tho it is making the snow/ice even slicker and slippery. (My toes have to dig in for traction.) RosieJane, the dachshund, walks, slips, slides, but keeps on keeping on!

Hope we can get outta here today. Am wondering about putting the scrape blade on the tractor.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Shoe... I understand y'all got it worse than we did. Sorry. It was bad anough here, LOL.

Keep them toes warm!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Heard today we are going to get more snow and ice starting tomorrow night. This one is coming from the North. The thing about KY is that we are central to everybody's weather, so the clouds and winds, the hot and cold tend to swirl around us like a meeting place. You never know what weather will be like in KY, no matter what the weatherperson has to say.

I had a thought though, considering how many snow days one has to take in the winter and be frightened for our walking children, shorter days, etc, etc, etc. why don't we switch the school calendars to have a 3 month winter vacation rather than a 3 month summer vacation! It makes sense to me. :)

Happy Day, Kathy

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Sun is shining! Birds are hiding in trees, no animals ut and about, whoops no upright animals either,(people).
Everything makes steam!
It is a balmy -8º,nearly 1 PM!
Shivering in Minnesota. Ice palace in St.Paul is pretty though!
Bernie

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

What is the Ice Palace, Bernie? Is it a winter thing in St. Paul? Can I find it online? -8..ouch. It is 18 here and I am cold! :) Kathy

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

It's built from ice blocks cut from a lake. First one was built in 1886. Goes with St.Paul Winter Carnival. Check it out at: www.winter-carnival.com click on live web cam of the ice palace.
This is one of the later ones that isn't melting away.
