Iced In?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Whew, what an ice storm! We are iced in, as I guess a lot of folks are.

This storm was supposed to dump ice, sleet, freezing rain and snow from midnight Saturday to midnight yesterday, which it did. Now they are saying today will bring more ice and freezing rain and it will be heavy enough to bring down power lines.

Fortunately, it should be gone by tomorrow when it warms and I can pack another load in my pickup... but just 100 miles away, where I'm moving, is forecast to get snow and ice tomorrow and the next day. I may never get all this stuff moved!

How's your weather?

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Darius, I'm not telling, you'll get the tar pot out :^(
Molly

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I hate to hear you got socked in with ice. I can handle a little snow, but ice brings everything to a stop. Across the mountains over into East Tennessee, the temperature was just warm enough for us to only get rain.

Here's wishing that things warm up quickly for everyone in NC, SC and Virginia. Nat

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Here in Southwestern PA we got about 5" of fresh snow on top of what we already had. Currently we're getting a coating of ice ... and I'm wishing I would've stayed home. I'm not looking forward to driving home in the ice. I'll drive in snow anytime but I don't like ice at all. We do have the facilities to remove snow from the roads which I know they don't in many parts of the South.

I wish I had my sled..... :)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

we are waiting to see just what is going to hit us-we are under a winter storm watch again

sure is warm stirring this tar! )

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Errrr we are having unusually cold weather today. It will be 63. (sound of frog hopping madly away from the tar bucket)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

frog,,, you AND Molly better watch out!

But, I'll give you a helpful hint: Tar is easily removed by rubbing butter into the tar. Melts it into a liquid right away, and then soap and water take off the residue. Learned that from a Vet once when my cat got tar all over one paw. Works on tar spots splashed from roadwork onto vehicles, also.

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Tampa International Airport is reporting 74F with widely scattered clouds but what do they know? My thermometer says its only 68.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Up here in the "FROZEN NORTH", it's just another winter day.
We have had about 3" of snow overnight, no ice, no sleet, just pretty white snow. Our ground was nearly black for the last 3 weeks or so. Snow is welcome here as it is very dry.
Definately need lots of moisture before the growing season.
Farther north in MN they received up to 18" of snow yesteday. That will make the resort owners happy, as snowmobiling is a #1 sport around here in the winter.
The best part about our weather is no worry about sun blockers! LOL.
Bernie

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Hey, Bernie.. I thought people in snowy areas need sun blockers just as much as people near a warm beach & ocean...

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Well, I not sure but there are a lot of "Whitey's" around here. You can't be outside long enough to catch muuch sun either. Deicer would make more sense!
Bernie

Lakeview, MI(Zone 5a)

boy I hate those ice storms. I remember one time we were iced in and without electricty for 3 days and had to drive the herd of milk cows 2 miles to a river to water them. That was when we had no generator! guess I won't complain about our zero and below that we have here now.Ice is worse!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

FROGS!! Help me I'm gonna do it!!! It's 75, not even noon and the a/c just turned on. Duck!!!!!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, we are iced in. Had another surprise ice storm come through in the middle of the night. The school dept could have saved a lot of frustration for people had they just canceled last night. Instead they waited until 6 a.m. and now people are scrambling to find sitters, etc! We were up half the night checking to see if we needed to wake the granddaughter early for the school bus. Didn't say anything until 6 and even then it was hard to find. I must say it is beautiful, like a jeweled landscape, but dangerous driving. It is melting now, but I expect tonight will be treacherous again.

We lost our power for a few hours yesterday afternoon and it frightened all the babies, but we made do.

Wish the sun would shine and the mud would go away so they could go outside to play. :) They need some fresh air.

Hope all is well in your world today. :) Kathy

Kylertown, PA(Zone 5b)

Actually, it's not bad here. We didn't seem to get it as much north of Interstate 80 in Western PA (for a change!).

The kids were hoping for a day off or a two hour delay, but it wouldn't have been necessary. I've seen it worse.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Over an inch ofice here now, and weathermen say more on the way.

My driveway is a sheet of ice that isn't going to move anytime soon. The street is the same.

Highways are all ice, and the Dept of Transportation says "you're risking your life if you leave the house."

So, even though my employer set a 2-hour delay, encouraging us all to report by 10am, I called in for a vacation day. I'm not risking my life just to get to work.

Gonna hit the Plants Database today, and get all the Latin names and growth habits for my existing plants. Then, if time allows, I'll start planning what else to add in the Spring.

:)

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Inda, are you getting any of this ice up there? We're getting it down here. And there's another snowstorm coming in tomorrow.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

We ended up with a confirmed 4" but I'd say there is more in spots. It snowed all day then we only got an hour of the icy stuff. The roads were presalted then salted again early this morning. They are reporting slippery roads and fishtailing but nothing toooooo bad. Most of the schools are closed, even the walking districts. This is our first snow day. Several companies did cancel their third and first shifts, but this is a rough time for the retail industry anyway.

tar'd n feather'd!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

You guys be careful with all that ice. We got about another 7" of snow and the freezing rain began about 9 a.m. I stayed home today, snow not so much a problem but didn't want to travel over the mountains and then be iced in away from home.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

It was 39 degrees this morning and there was frost on the roof.

The only "snow days" we get are earthquake days. We had a week off ten years ago because an earthquake had rendered our workplace unsafe. The morning of the earthquake, I was listening to the closings the radio, like a kid listens for school closings, hoping that my workplace would be closed for the day. I did not want to be inside that concrete house of cards in the event of an aftershock.

Kylertown, PA(Zone 5b)

It's not freezing rain here that I can see, Sledder. It IS snowing lightly-- that little stuff that piles up. :-)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

darius...it's 74 here!

Uhh, inside my shoffice that is! Wood stove is paying its rent today! Outside, 21 degrees, snow and ice everywhere, and ain't nobody gonna go nowhere today unless it's on foot!

We're supposed to get today's ice storm too. Warnings until 10:00 tonite but that doesn't mean we're in the clear, trees could come down all nite long from the ice on them. Guess it'll be another late nite for me!

Hope you have wood for your stove and plenty of candles left over from your dinner party!

Feed the birds if you can folks. Peanut butter and crushed crackers smeared on anything from empty TP rolls to apple cores makes a nice treat.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

We have been feeding the birds. Keep 40 lbs of bird feed and several squares on hand. We have been "cooped up" watching the birds outside. They are awesome, we have woodpeckers, cardinals, bluejays, sparrows, chickadees, finch, orioles, and lots more I don't know what they are. But they are busy with the feeder.....

My stepdad used to save the bacon grease and put it in the refrigerator. When it was hard, he would put it in an onion bag and hang outside. The birds loved it.

:) Happy Day, Kathy

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, our family was snowed in French Lick/Paoli Peaks Indiana yesterday with 100+ high-school and college kids. The group finally decided to try our luck around 6pm, and thankfully the roads were passable through Louisville and south on into Tennessee. It looked like the line of ice storm hit north of Bowling Green, by the looks of the trees.

(Then we spent over an hour in Nashville, stuck in traffic due to a five-car pileup - which had nothing to do with weather. So close to home, and yet so far!!!)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Y'all been listening to the weather channel today.....better stay inside!

"eyes"

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah, we still have rain showers coming tonight then into snow tomorrow. It is in the mid 30s here so the mess could go either way-wet or frozen. ICK!

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

I keep telling you, if you don't want the precipitation, send it my way. But no, nobody listens. ;-)

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

That's funny Kelli, we keep trying to send it to you, but no one's listening....!!! :) ;)

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

Currently 57 degrees, partly cloudy.

Duck and run from that tar!

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

It's 60 degrees here according to weatherunderground.com, but I wouldn't know. This building has no windows. There, does that make you feel any better? ;-)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ummm, no! You can leave that building! LOL

southeast, NE

Started with sleet yesterday a.m. then switched to snow. Been snowing off and on all day with strong cold wind blowing. Wind chill is supposed to be -30 tonight. Had to walk outside several times during the day to feed a couple of bottle babies (goat kids) and snow went up to my knees. Weather people said 11 inches but my knees are more than 11 inches off of the ground. You know it is bad when they shut down the University of Nebraska and government office.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We need to get some of the queen gasbags from DG to align themselves in a westernly-facing line and start talking. Maybe then Kelli can get her precipitation! Either that or a lot of funny chatter may waft its way there...

We didn't get much snow, maybe 2" overnight? On top of that we got a little crust of ice, but nothing like some of you folks got in the Carolinas. We're due to get more winter weather tonight and tomorrow, but who knows what it will bring.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Ugh...I mean "HI Folks!"...

Once again, I tried to keep up with my 10 yr old today! Our road, as mentioned above, is covered with snow and ice, and of course after doing chores it was my duty to go sledding! Yay!!!

My cheeks are rosey red. (You decide which pair I'm referring to.) Snow/ice is cold and seems to love hanging around inside your pants and up your shirt.

My beard broke a little while ago. Yep, at a temp of 21 degrees hair freezes when it gets pushed into a snow bank at 100 miles per hour. (Oh well, at least this time I didn't run into the stored tomato cages! They really get your attention!)

In addition to sledding, at the top of the road we found out where the neighborhood boys had stashed their snowboards under the trees. Neither me nor my DD had ever tried one before so...you guessed it! My right side hip now brags most of the colors of the rainbow but it seems to prefer Black and Blue!

What a great day! Hope ya'll had Fun, too!

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

It rained then froze here in Richmond, VA yesterday then dumped about 3" of snow on top of it. All the company finally went home this afternoon so it was just family for the first time since we got here.

The grandchildren, our daughter and I made the traditional Jell-o cookies this afternnon and Jack and Mel went out for a while. Tomorrow Jack and Mel will take in some historical sights if the streets are cleared enough for the places to be open. They were closed today due to the weather. There is the possibility we may not be able to fly out Wednesday afterall. No problem for Jack & I but for our granddaughter who is due to report to duty at a new military base in Texas it is a real problem. Hopefully we will be able to leave at the appointed time for her sake. Another day won'tmake any difference to us, but more than that will mess it up at the cafe' where I work on Friday evenings.

I hear there is ice and snow in our home area too. I've been calling home almost every day to check on things.

GOD bless and keep each and all of you.

I've been worried about you Shoe. It looks like you're getting hammered over there. Our entire driveway is an ice rink. Didn't even check the mail as I just know it didn't run. We are toasty and warm with the woodburners. Yep, keeping the feeders filled. The birds are so fun to watch. I make bird cakes for them too! DD made 3 attempts to get to work and couldn't get a half mile from home without sliding and she's a yankee. So she was able to get back up her driveway and called into work and they had already closed anyway. Winter....ya gotta love it! LOL

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

EvaMae, Richmond seems so close to me sometimes. Guess you are getting the weather we are also having. None-the-less, I'm sure you are having a great visit and enjoying yourselves. (Jello cookies? Maybe I'll see that in the Recipe Forum? Not familiar with them.)

Vic...I figgered ya'll would be doing okay. WE're fine here and the last look at the weather/news we might escape the big ice storm they keep talking about! (I sure hope so...one of the generators is being quirky and disagreeable!) Hope you have plenty of firewood. Stay warm and enjoy the 'slow down' we get to experience!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Wow, we never did get the ice. We've had ice storms in the past, though, and I remember! The one I most vividly remember was when I worked for an insurance company. Our medical director lived up on a steep hill and his driveway was completely sheeted over. One of the people from work went to give him a ride to work, and cracked up to see him just flop down on his butt and slide down the driveway to her car! Smart guy - whole lot better than trying to walk down the thing, huh?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

We're over here in Western Canada on the Coast watching all the antics on TV....although, a light snowfall this morning was pretty! It didn't land! thankgoodness! What a strange year! Elaine
