When to transplant these??

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

My sister is wanting to divide some of her plants and she wanted to know when the best time is to divide all these...
Red Hot Pokers
Columbines
Honey and wind lily
Shasta Daisy

I "think" that spring would be the best time to do all of them. What do you think? Should she wait until next Fall to do these?
Thanks in advance :)

I am not an expert by any means, but I always go by the rule that you don't divide when the plant is either blooming or about to.

So you think that now would be a good time? We aren't having a real cold winter here(as you know) So since the ground isn't frozen wonder if it would hurt to do the transplanting now? That way the spring growth would start in its new spot in the garden.

Hmmmm still not sure what I should tell her.

Mollybee, if you do not think you will have any hard freezes yet this season then they can be divided now and use the rest of the winter to develop roots. But if you think you will have a freeze before spring the stress from dividing in addition to the freeze could kill them off. So it would be safest to either wait or put the divisions in tubs and keep them in a freeze free place to be put out in spring.

You can do it now Molly, Autumn/after blooming is the better time as the soil is much warmer and the plant is still in growth. Spring divisions take longer to 'wake up' and you may find one or two are lost but that is the problem with all types of propagation.

This is all really good to know. Molly, I sure couldn't divide anything now - our ground is frozen solid and it's sooooo cold. You're so blessed to live in Georgia! :)

Thank you all soo much for your help.
I'll pass on your words of advice to her, and I'm sure she'll manage to get them moved in or around the right time.

Thanks soo much :)

Molly, you probably shouldn't even divide the columbine. They don't move or divide well. If it's real special, maybe a root cutting, but most are started from seed. What do I know though, I'm frozen in for another 2-3 months at least.

Maybe the columbine act differently in different areas but here they can be easily propagated by division and act like they don't even notice being dug up and moved about! Mayb because of our mild climate and acidic soil?

You could be right, Georgia - California - long way from Manitoba

echoes, I sure wonder if it's the soil or what because I divided and moved my columbine 2 yrs. ago and last yr. they were so huge I was shocked. I'm going to have to divide them again because my spot is already full and they're crowding my astilbe. They are in almost full shade. Just a little morning sun and evening sun. Who knows?

I think my sister is just wanting to move things around because at first she was just putting plants here and there and scattering out seeds to fill in.
But now she is wanting to clean things up a bit by putting all her Columbine in one spot and all her Daisy's in one spot etc.
I on the other hand have plants scattered all around too and I guess to make it look neater I too need to put things all together.
I know I need to group all my daylilies in one bed, but when I had them in my hand I just went crazy filling in the empty spots through out the garden. Not realizing then that they would have looked better in a big group all in one bed. So I guess I too have some moving to do this year!
