I think I jumped the gun a little. I have planted tomato seeds, pepper seeds for now. Hope they stay alive until they can get planted. I may try growing tomatoes in the house.
I already started seeds
I am working on flats n flats of daylily seeds today!
Where are ou growing them? Im in the basement under artificial lite and cool temps down there.
I wait till late feb/early march for my stuff like that sometimes it gets to leggy if i do it to early!
ok back to the dungeon LOL
HoniBee,
I think you jumped the gun on the tomatoes. I did that one year. They grew real tall and lanky. I chopped off the tops, not knowing the outcome. I ended up with Bushy plants with lots of maters. I think I just got off lucky. Maybe if you use those wall-o-waters you can get them outside earlier, before they grow too tall.
That is a little early! Better hope the groundhog doesn't see his shadow! I have used those wall-of-waters myself, and they were okay, but the tomatoes still did not do much until the soil and air got warmer- but they survived a March 17th transplanting, about two months early!
Interesting about chopping off the tops, this will sometimes make the tomato plant into a tetraploid when it grows back, so much more substantial and vigorous. I usually lay the lanky ones into a shallow trench and just bury most of the stem, that works well to establish a lot of roots.
Yes, the "chopping off the tops" was scary, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I took my chances and like I said, I think I lucked out - I never had such big and fruitful plants. Since then, I bought plants from the nearby nursery and haven't done well with those. I'm going to start from seed again this year, but will wait until mid-February to late February before doing it - those plants grow fast in this eastern window.
As soon as this darn computer disconnects me again ( five times in the last 45 min) I am going out to the GH and get started on planting my few daylily seeds. Didn't have good luck with hybridizing last summer. Think it was way to hot. Also have to get my pansy seeds soaking. Donna
What are these wall-o-waters? Did I miss something? I would love to put my Tomatoes's out earlier. The area I'm in doesn't warm up enough sometimes until April. One year mine were tall and lanky like yours Karrie, because it was almost the end of April until I was comfortable with putting them out. Didn't yeild much. Mere
Mere,
you can see the Wall-o-Waters at:
http://www.heirloomseeds.com
Click "supplies", or "tomatoes" at the end of the list of tomato seeds it describes them.
They are on other websites as well, but that is just the first one that comes to mind.
There is more than one company that manufactures them. One of them has clear, green & red, the other just green.
They are plastic walls that you fill with water, that help protect your plant, and keep it warm. I'm going to try it for the first time this Spring. I've heard mostly all good feedback about them. Good luck!
