Ah the joy of clearance isles. I found "The new flower expert" by Dr. D.G. Hessayon, it says it was published in 1999 but thats ok by me. Lots of pics and info although not as much specific info as I could have asked for. It was origonaly 17.99 on sale for 12.99 plus I got half off of that so got it for under 7.00. I think I did pretty good. Any imput on this or other books I should be keeping an eye out for?
bought a new book
7 bucks is pretty good! Hamilton Book is worth keeping an eye on. http://www.hamiltonbook.com
Sounds like a good deal to me, enjoy!
Its silly but I was so excited to find a good deal. I saw one i would love to have at the book store but they wanted $80.00 for it. Way out of my pocketbook range.
Dravencat, when I see a book I want, I come home and look for a used copy on Amazon and half.com. I usually get new or almost new books for a very cheap price. If one isn't available at the time, I put it on my "Wish List" at Amazon so I don't forget about it.
I seldom pay even half price for books. There are, of course, some exceptions.... but not many. Since I also have a small business of selling books on the internet, I know that very good books are for sale at lower prices.
half.com http://half.ebay.com/index.jsp and Abebooks.com http://www.abebooks.com/?AID=7154009&PID=1114205 are GREAT places to find used, like-new or even brand-new books at a fraction of their cover price.
Allbookstores.com http://www.allbookstores.com/ is very helpful when you're doing price comparisons on books (new and used.)
I buy all my books used also and have had great luck. I try to give the business to my local used book store first and then do the rest on Amazon.
I also try to keep my books in the best condition possible, so I can resell them. Often a used bookshop will give you more store credit for a book than cash. So it pays to ask.
The new Taylors Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a book I highly recomend. I have the Royal Hort. Society's Encyclopedia and it is on it's way to be sold since I like the Taylors so much more.
I like the PDR for herbal medicines. I found mine used for 25 dollars. There are a lot of used ones out there as they publish new ones each year.
PDR is Physicians Desk Reference
All Right!! Thank you thank you thank you. I didnt even think of checking out the internet. "DUH" I thought amazon only sold new books so to be honest Ive never checked them out. Im going to check out all of those sources thank you.
breezy, I didn't know PDR's covered herbal medicines. I have one on my shelf (actually, my books are mostly packed) just in case I need it. It's alongside my Merck Manuals (one for animal medicine and one for humans).
Last time I even looked at the Merck manual was to find the signs of early detection for measles for a friend's son ... a red dot appears inside the mouth by a back molar, as I recall... it really has been YEARS as he's grown now, LOL.
Another real good site for buying used books is
http://www.alibris.com/.
lolol, I had access to as many PDR's and Merck manuals as I could have wanted, "back in the day" when I administered our company's health plans. I stopped lugging them with me from office to office when my career moved into other aspects of HR work :) Since they update the PDR each year, it should be fairly easy to get a cheap, slightly dated one (and the herbal info shouldn't change THAT much from year to year.) If you find a paperback one, I'd recommend it - it's a lot easier to tote than the cloth-bound.
The herbal info sounds great, Im really going to have to check into that book. The only really big book I have right now is a pregnancy book from the mayo clinic, lots of info and it was free from State Farm insurane. You just had to call and ask for it. I dont know if they still do that or not. If anyone wants it let me know and ill send it for postage. Its about 4-5 years old now tho Ill have to check.
Dravencat
The 'Expert' series by Dr. Hessayon are extremely popular here in the UK, even the older versions. You may find it not quite as specific as you'd prefer but they are so very useful and easy to read when you need a quick reference.
I second Abebooks, a great site for looking up a whole multitude of books (and making sure you aren't paying over the odds).
I you do a search for "antiquarian books" or "used books" you will find all kinds of good buys.
www.bibliofind.com used to be the best and then it was bought out by amazon. Now, I can't say I like it much.
Steph
I hate when a great place gets bought out by someone who cant or wont keep up the standards we all come to expect. Thanks for all the great info everybody.
Oh, and I guess I missed this comment earlier but I would like to respond to it now...
Darius stated, "breezy, I didn't know PDR's covered herbal medicines. I have one on my shelf (actually, my books are mostly packed) just in case I need it. "
"PDR for Herbal Medicines" is a seperate PDR.
Steph
Thanks, Steph.
You're very welcome! :)
