Thanks for keeping DG free from spyware

At Dave's suggestion I too have been using Firebird over the last week. Still have Netscape as my default, but have only opened when I needed to find a bookmark from pre-Firebird time. Do have a question for ya Dave or GW---is there a way to import my bookmarks from Netscape to Firebird? Hopin' there is since they both appear to be from the Mozilla guys. Firebird has pretty much the same feel as Netscape, n'est pas?

langbr, yes I think it does import from Netscape. Just go to Bookmarks-Manage Bookmarks.

Then say "File-Import" and find your old netscape bookmarks and away you should go.

With folks starting to use Firebird, I should code up some fun DG features that take advantage of some of the firebird/Gecko extensions. Writing a XUL-based Journal application, for example, would be nice. :)

I noticed that my Moveable Type blog does not display correctly in Mozilla or any of its other flavors. I have to use IE to manage it. Still, I'm using Firebird by default and like it a lot.

i just tried down loading it and my PC won't let me i get a message "paint cannot read this file. not a valid bitmap file"

ok i get it now i think my pc is trying ot open it as a paint file?? what did i do wrong

I got the same thing, only mine tried ot open it in photoshop. But I downloaded PKunzip, and then it opened fine except now I understand I should have opened it through the Mozilla install program mentioned above.

That's the trouble when file extension names overlap, isn't it?

A fun journal application would be neat to play with, Dave. Would the end user see it like usual, and just the front end for the member would be different?

Waaahhh....I knew it. I DL'd it and got Winzip and a whole list of Firebird files. Not knowing what in the world to do with it (Winzip needs to be dummied down a bit more for me) I just stared at it. (That didn't help.)

IE...I'm here to stay. :>(

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Shoe, you can install Firebird via a Windows installer program if you're not comfortable with Winzip. Scroll down a bit at this http://seb.mozdev.org/firebird and you'll see version 7's installer.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmmm...looks confusing to me. Every link on that page looks like it will install 'something'! (My brain works on the wrong side, remember?)

I better hang with IE. Maybe someday....

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

This is it, Shoe. When you click this link you'll get a download window: http://downloads.us-east3.mozdev.org/seb/MozillaFirebird-0.7-setup.exe

If you'd rather, what you want is the first one under "Milestone Releases":

MozillaFirebird-0.7-setup.exe 2003-10-15 07:13:18

It's a piece of cake, and it won't mess anything up for ya. Scout's honor!

yippeee that one worked for me thanks GW. now i can start playing with fire lol

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Okay, here I sit, coffee-headed! (That means a bit more alert than at 1:am!)

I'll try your link, GW. Muchos thankos! (

Horseshoe, I had the same problem, then I downloaded the installer.

I kind of like Firebird! I really like the tabs! And I agree, Dave's garden does look better with Firebird.

To play in Pogo though, I have to switch over to IE, and another website/radio station with the pop up windows media player needs IE still.

how do i get the pop up if the site needs them to operate?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Sue...didja have to get rid of the previous download that went to your zip file? Or did you just go to the installer and it installs over the first one you DL?

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Good question Shoe, will check my hard drive and see.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Ok, Horseshoe: Nothin on the hard drive but the folder for Firebird. Nice and clean.

I think it installs over the first one. Could not find a zip file......

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yay! Thanks! I tag along behind then.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Now that you have it installed, check out the plug-in's at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/phoenixwin.html and extensions at http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/#.

Extensions are plug-ins which provide additional functions for Firebird, some of them pretty handy and fun!

It installs by default to c: - program files - mozilla.org - mozillafirebird

Northern California, CA

OK I bit. Really like it, very tidy and efficient and Dave's does look superior on FireBird. The installer automatically transferred all my IE bookmarks for me, what more could a person want?!

I'm thrilled that Firebird is working so well for all you Windows folks! That's fantastic news. I started using it (a very old version of firebird, before it was called firebird) back in 2001 and I haven't looked back since. Go Gecko! :-)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Howdy. Me again. (speaking quietly) (I'm shy)...

*sniff* *whimper* I DL'd Firebird (THANKS GW for the link!) However, even tho there is a Firebird icon on my desktop when I click on it, I still get online with IE? (And no, when the page came up after the download to set Firebird as my default, I didn't choose yes. I wanted to use IE as my default but thought I could click Firebird to use when I wanted to.)

What I did? What I did not do? How do I get online now using Firebird?

(shyly slinking silently sideways so so-many souls shant sock me) (couldn't think of a word for ME that started is "S") (Sorry) τΏτ

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Well shut mah everloving pie-hole!

I'm on Firebird! I'm playing around. Quite a nice piece of playness here! (I wish I had my "links" button somewhere tho.) (Or do I?)

This is very weird tho. A nice weird. On one page I see I'm using Firebird...then I click on a "favorite" and it show IE. Am I normal?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You can copy your links folder from the imported IE favorites and paste it onto Firebird's own toolbar, Shoe. I'd make Firebird default for a bit and see what you think of it. You can always switch it back. To make it default, click TOOLS > OPTIONS and click the button "Set Default Browser".

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Ten four. Not sure yet how to copy my favorites folder over to firebird yet, however I have learned that if I click on one it opens up all those "tabs" (them babies really spin!) at the top of my screen. (Then I can shut them off, if I choose)

If this thread is getting to much, should we newcomers start a "Firebird" thread, rather than milking this one? It's kinda fun playing with this!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Firebird automatically imports your IE Favorites! :)

Holland, MI(Zone 6a)

I have just transitioned from IE to SBCDSL and am using the SBC YAHOO browser. Gleaning the above posts, I am thinking that the change in my ISP and browser should provide some added security. Does this make sense?

My old computer is slower than molasses, so I think I will run through the programs and see if I can find any Spyware.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I think SBC Yahoo's browser is just a customized version of IE, isn't it? One thing now that you have broadband, Bird - make sure you have either a software firewall (like ZoneAlarm at http://zonelabs.com ) or hardware firewall (like a router) is installed.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I've downloaded Firebird but have a few questions..
1-My address bar has gotten very short..how do I fix that.
2-How do I clear cashe?
3- Where do I drag & drop icons to to create links?
4- Is that making my favorite places like DG handy?
5-I downloaded the zip version 1st. It is still on my C drive download folder..what's the best way to get rid of it?
6-Can I drag just he bookmarks I want from IE?
7- I seem to have a BLANK bar under under the toolbar.. what if anything is that for?
Sorry for so many questions but sure I'll have other questions :)

First, Have you looked at Mozilla's support pages? That's where you need to start: http://texturizer.net/firebird/ :)
