This Is a Test,from the ....

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Here we go Clare, doing a test so we will know which way may be the best way tp propagate those difficult passion vines.
This is the long fingered passion vine that might be the bat vine one,Coriacea.Several pictures to follow.
First is the air bubbling styafoam rooting in water test, covered with a plastic bag.
Next is the vine in a blown bag, also trying one not blown and one with 2 plastic cups.
Then jar of water in a plastic laundry tub with water and other water loving plants.

This is so funny because I'm doing the exact same thing at my house except I don't have the air-bubbling styrafoam method. I've got the jar of water, the covered jar of water, the jar of water in a tub of water, and the jar of water in the sealed plastic method. Ready, set, go! I'll go take some pictures of mine, and we'll keep track of our progress! Oh, I also have a Passiflora cutting in soil, covered by a plastic bag method!

Can't wait to see how this turns out. I have no luck rooting passiflora in water except for P. Belotti.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Clare,You've been reading my mind!!!!
Doing the same test will give us a control base so to speak
and being in different parts of the country,if every thing works out the same it can be done anywhere in the country.
Well I hope somebody finds out what that long finger passion vine is.I keep searching, but haven't found out anything new.
Wow what a way to start out the new year, running tests ,will know the starting date for sure!!
Brugie, yep I'm all excited too,to know how this test comes out!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Okay, here are my test subjects. In the first picture, I have all the different methods. The cuttings in front are fresh cut Passiflora Alata "Ruby Glow" for you, Don, if they root.

Yes, you're right that it's a good day to start things because you will remember the date. I'm going to plant a bunch of seeds tomorrow too.

I'm going to keep my cuttings indoors in the kitchen for now.

These are mostly Brug cuttings, but one of them is a partially rooted Passiflora cutting in soil. This Passiflora started developing roots in water with the plastic cup over it.

This is all of them together, including the new P. Alata "Ruby Glow."

In the first picture of mine, the one on the far left is a Passiflora cutting in a jar of water, sitting in a tub of water, with a plastic covering over the first jar. I think that one is the most promising.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wow Clare,things look great!
And you can't go wrong with Sara Lee,cause you know everybody loves Sara Lee!!!LOL!
So excited won't be able to sleep tonite!!!
By any chance you get HGTV?
After the rose parade there gonna have the new show of Giant
plants, shows the victoria water lilly, man is those leaves huge!
Happy new year to you, look forward to next year tests together!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL! Your test subjects look so much more sophisticated than mine. Tell me what are you using to inflate the one bag? The pumped air one is really exciting. Are you pumping air all the time or just every so often?

I'll check to see if we get HGTV. I can't believe that I don't know if we have it!

Happy New Year to you too, Don. I look forward to our results too!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Clare,my wife calls me an old blowhard,Put the bag around my lips and blew!,good thing I quit smoking 10yrs ago!!LOL!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Good for you, Don. I quit smoking about ten years ago too. Of course, I used to be thin! I traded a nicotine addiction for a weight problem! LOL!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!Your not telling me anything!!!LOL!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, well, Don. At least we'll live longer:-)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes!Thats what I'm counting on!Lot more tropicals to try before going to Big garden in the sky!

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I sure hope you have good luck on finding out witch method works best.......I have tried water, and soil and so far out of about 10 cuttings have only succed (barley) with 2...and these may still croak....
I don't have good luck rooting these either....
Dee

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Dee,
Me either, and there has to be a easier and better way, will let you know the results will post here!

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I will keep watch on this thread and try some experiments on my own to. The Passiflorias are one of my favorites and I am trying to get more by learning to root them successfully.

I just planted some seeds several weeks ago I got from Tim and hopefully they will sprout for me before tooo long. I know some can take up to a year to sprout so I will be a patient as I can in the waiting and caring for empty pots...LOL..

I just lost a real beauty called Semanii, but not to rooting but to my neighbors dogs. I will be looking for it again.....
Dee

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Dee,
Sorry to hear you lost your Semanii, yes its a beauty.
First time attempt germinating passiflora seed I got from Clare,Morifolia passiflora seeds, took a couple weeks or so but there and growing fine.

Hi Brugie,
Thats a pic of Semanii, the passiflora Dee lost from a neighbors dog, very pretty flower!
Thanks MaVierose, those links were most interesting.
Never knew they grow passion vines like a grape vineyard.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Thanks again MaVieRose,
These are most interesting, what amazes me more is how many people in the UK and Europe,Holland Denmark and Finland gow these tropical vines, also New Zealand having vineyards of them, commercialy grown produce.Seems more so than in the USA,or am I just not hearing about them being grown commerically In the USA.The fruit I get on my maypops are not very tasty here,so I'm asuming there must be different varieties that are tasty.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

it is always a pleasure to give a helping hand Don. personally, i have not grown passifloras. when i used to lived in Los Angeles, they grew wildly in my backyard.

if not mistaken the passion fruit that is edible is passiflora edulis. the fryuit has a nice taste and i love it.

am sure there are lots of commercial grower out there, i just have not come across then as yet. when i have more time, i will look into it.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Everyone! Thanks for all the great links! Don, that Passiflora is so beautiful. Does it have a pleasant fragrance?

I am sad to report that my Passiflora Macrocarpa has taken a turn for the worse. I repotted it really late this past summer, and it did not reestablish itself before the cold weather hit. One stem started to die back but the brown traveled to the main stem. I quickly took cuttings from the top green part so I hope to be able to root them so I don't entirely lose my plant. The roots still look pretty healthy so maybe it will grow back from the roots in the spring. All that is left now is a brown stem. This link indicates that the foliage is often killed in winter:

http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Passifloraceae/Passiflora_quadrangularis.html

Another method I am trying is layering in the soil outside. I have buried a stem of my P. Amethystina hybrid and will dig it up in the spring if not sooner.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Clare thats a pic off a photo gallery of the passie Dee lost,I don't if its fragrant or not, sorry to here about your passie dying, hopefully your cuttings will make it thru alright, its so warm here today I'm out having to water outside being its so dry here, just walk inot the greenhouse and the smell of passiflora curaela is so sweet smelling,I can sniff sniff sniff!!!!
Didn't MaVierose find some kool Links!!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks again MaVieRose, wish I could grow them and see for myself which are the best tasting!!!!LOL!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

sorry cannot answer that question Don. ur tastebud differs from mine. u simple got to taste to what appeal to u. try sample some of what is being sold in the stores.

i guess i will have to do the same to be able to have a start of passies in my yard for this year, since most of the sites suggested fresh seeds to begin a new plant.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

My P. Edulis is the purple-flowered variety and didn't taste like much to me. There is not much "fruit" there, just the seeds surrounded by a gel-like substance.

Your so right,if only they would sell them in the stores here!!Being in the middle of the country they seldom get to here.Altho I have seen them in the past, but would have to take out a loan if I was too buy very many!!LOL!
Clare the fruit looks better than the taste!!!LOL!
I have one other paasie,I recieved in a trade but almost lost it when I brought it in for the winter, drop all its leaves, but has come back beautiful, any Ideas????

This baby is quite the bloomer, just can't get it to set fruit! This one has bloomed about everyday since I brought
it inside for the winter, and a very nice fragrance, similar to wintergreen gum.

Awesome pictures, Don. The first one has fantastic-looking shiny leaves. Wow! It certainly is beautiful. I've never seen one before with super shiny leaves like that. I can't wait for it to bloom this summer so we can find out what it is.

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)
