Wayside Catalog: Page 78

Hmmmm, is it me, or is Lillium majoense pretty or ugly? I think I like it! :), but I've always shied away from any orange/red/(purple?) combo.

Anyone? Or alternatively, what else in Wayside attracts/repels you this season? Besides their prices...:-D

And since I'm a Poppy 'Nut' look at this one!

Well:), wouldn't want to discourage you about the lily. But, it sure is different!!!

Just received the catalogue today. From a quick look, there are many great shrubs. How come the prices are great too?LOL

All the ones I like are considered rare, and an entirely new species. Thus super expensive! I will probably spend $25 or so this year.

I could fill a garden with nothing but shrubs; there are so many great ones available.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL, the more I look at Lillium majoense, the more I'm thinking ugly...but I have time....lol....

I do need more 'greenery' or bones in our garden. They do have a nice selection of shrubs, I agree. Too bad I can't plant Thuja 'Green Giant' around our patio. :)

This one stands out as a major contender though. Picea abies 'Little Gem'. Dwarf 1 foot habit.

i luv it!!!

Sometimes things look better when you have them planted in your garden rather than just looking at them on the page. I would say yes on the lily, and also on the poppy, depending on the prices of course. And that little fat shrub is a cute little thing. I like things with itty bitty leaves.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Yikes! $19.95 for L. majoense.

Wonder how Hydrangea quercifolia (p 4) 'Little Honey' will hold it's color. The catalogue says all season. Oh boy! $44.95.

The Echinacea purpurea 'Razzmatazz' on the back cover is neat! Oh no, $19.95.

I guess the older you become, the harder it is to accept the rising cost of plants.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh but it's so hard to spend $19.95 when I've had a chance to participate in some of our co-ops! That lily will certainly stand out in the landscape. Decisisons, decisions!

Little Honey looks gorgeous! I grew 'Alpenglow' last summer. As fall came the foilage turned darker and colorful and the bloom darkened also. Here is a photo of Alpenglow taken last August. http://davesgarden.com/ej/showimage.php?eid=51026

Oh, and did anyone see Sedum 'Queen Bee' on page 85? :-D

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

$19.95!!!!!

I'm selling the wrong bulbs.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

wait for the online sales ;)

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

notmartha, it is hard to stand fast with all the catalogues coming in right now.:) I just have the urge to buy, buy, buy. I'll try to hold off. We, in W Pa, are lucky to have a perennial nursery with over 3,000 varieties. Big, healthy plants for $6 to $7. But that means waiting 'til April to do any buying. Oh well!

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

golddog....which nursery? Close to me too?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi SLEDDER, http://www.fridaysperennials.com

The plug sale is a good one, but sometimes the weather is so cold when they have it. Mid-April?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Sue, I have been growing this one for three yrs now...a great performer on the West Coast!

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Sue!, will keep Picea abies 'Litle Gem' in mind. As I look out the window, the back yard is really bare. I thought last season was the best for some time in the back. But now it is all gone. I have been adding structures, and now have to think along the line of plants for the winter. Plants that hold the snow; plants with different shapes.

If don't plan now, by spring time, other gardening jobs take over.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Roselaine: so tell me, how do you like it? Does it look better than the one in the catalog? I just love Lilys! You have given me hope that I 'might' find it locally.

golddog, I'm with you. I'm waiting until spring also to do the bulk of my shopping. I will visit Flower World in Maltby. (15 acres of Retail Display, with three of them under cover. They have a nice tropical section too.) Wayside's online catalog almost had me hitting the "add item to your cart" yesterday. And here is something else for winter interest: A dwarf tree that I love (and I've found with other gardener's it's either you love this one or you don't!) is a dwarf burning bush. Mine is growing in tree form. Green in summer, fire red in autumn, and berries in the winter. It's only about 5 1/2 feet tall and about 4 1/2 feet wide.

notmartha: I do remember Wayside's 50% or was it 75% off sale, it is worth the wait! Always some goodies then.

Who's got $$$? My youngest lost her bumper, brakes & transmission in the past 2 weeks. Guess who's paying the bills? Me! And the college daughter has a "noise" she doesn't like on her car. Doesn't look I'll have garden money until May!!!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, how I hear ya wandasflowers!! 2003 has got the be the slowest year we have ever had and the budget just tightens and tightens! Plus we are still saving for our boys college fund.......

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

$19.95 and $49.95 for one plant?

astonding. Buried Treasure, I feel like you, I'm really selling the wrong plants.
but than again, I don't have to print up gaudy catalogs and mail them to every citizen of the world.
For $50 you could probably get 11 or 12 plants from me.

funny how people view price tho, I've actually had people email me remarking that they would have prefered a 'high quality' plant and not just a cheap plant. *laughs* maybe If I tripled my prices people would think they're higher quality.

ohh, I have a source for Echinacea Razzmatazz for $.40 a plug... that'd be a nice markup, maybe I should get in a few hundred.

Drew

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Some people equal price to quality-- That's silly! Many of the newest(most expensive) daylilies & irises I see look like other cheaper ones I already have. With the Iowa winters being so Cold & summers so dry/hot, I find the older, cheaper varieties survive better.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Perhaps we need to run a redux of this poll question pretty soon: http://davesgarden.com/t/378443/

As for me, I buy what I like (and can afford), which is sometimes the old stand-bys, and sometimes the newer stuff. (And never from Wayside, because I find them overwhelming in price and underwhelming in quality - many apologies to those who love Wayside - enjoy your purchases and ignore this old curmudgeon!!!)

I grow from seed all the plants I can (even trees and shrubs, when the seed is viable.) For the hybrids, I try to trade for small cuttings whenever possible. (And thanks to some really generous members here, I have many "treasures" in my garden that are beginning to get big enough for me to turn around and share with others :o)

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

OK deeproots -- fess up your source!! I was just looking at the wayside Razzmatazz and drooling away . . . almost trying to rationalize away the $20 price tag because it is just so cool!!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Sue, I really like lilies and grow quite a few of them, but con't remember ever paying that much for a bulb. Also you have to remember the catalog photo is twice as large as they are saying the actual bloom. I like to look at Wayside catalog but rarely buy from them, someone else voiced it perfectly over-priced, under value . Donna

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I still have not ordered it :). I just can't bring myself to spend that much on one! Now, if they gave me 3 or 4 for that price maybe.........

Last summer I spent what I thought was a lot for 1 plant. It was $14.99 for 1 black calla lily bulb. When I got it in the mail it was teeny weeny. I thought, this thing will never grow large like the photo in the catalog. It grew slowly and produced small leaves, and a 2 or 3 small flowers. A few of my gardening friends gave me the raised eyebrow on that one! But I had to have it.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

I recall seeing it in one of my growers catalogs...
i forget if it was GLY or headstart or who...

lemme go look (might be a bit, I've got a filing cabinet of papers)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

hope, I think the plant you're talking about is Zamioculcas: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/2142/ZZ+Plant%2C+Aroid+Palm%2C+Succulent+Philodendron_Zamioculcas_zamiifolia.html

The leaves resemble Zamia furfuracea: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/51472/Cardboard+Palm_Zamia_furfuracea.html

Hope that helps!
