Time to cut back "Autumn Joy" Sedum?

Williams, CA(Zone 9a)

My Sedum is starting to look a little leggy and pale. I was wondering if, and how much I should cut it back now. The
blossoms are past the rust stage and are more on the brown side!
Thank you for your advice and suggestions

Morning Dee -

It's tough to do, but I just gritted my teeth and did the dirty deed last week. With the first rains I find that if not cut back these large Sedum become snail and slug condos. They love to climb up in the nice succulent layers and spend the winter overeating and making babies.

I've invested in some of the metal support systems offered by Kinsman's http://kinsmangarden.com/p/fullpage.php?page=071&session=1111632 among others and hope that next year with a better support system I can prevent some of the year end "flopping over" caused by the weight of these great plants.

How far do you cut them back? I got some starts this fall and have never had them before.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I don't bother to cut mine until spring. The plant dies right back to the ground here. The stems will brown and dry... in the spring I just break them off when I'm tidying up.

When can they be divided and moved? Spring? I have some at my office that I want to divide and bring some home.

It might be too late to divide now, but then I'm from a colder zone. I just wanted to say, these are the easiest plants to root cuttings. Either in water or rooting medium in the spring.

I leave my Autumn Sedum up all winter. They shelter smaller critters & the seed heads are visited by birds. I break them off when the first green buds of spring break thru.

To propagate, I just break off 3 or 4 stems, de-leaf the stem & stick in the ground with just the top leaves out. Roots start where each of the old leaves were attached to the stem. New roots in 2 weeks without a hassle anytime from spring to fall in Iowa.
