Do You Practice The Rhythm Method?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Is planting by the moon considered: an old wive's tale; something from the Farmer's Alamanac; advice from an old Italian farmer down the street? Is there anything to this method?

golddog, you need to write headlines for the Enquirer... I think people with large families practice the rhythm method...

My mother told me I'm the result of the "rhythum method". Good Catholics in the 40's relied on it and we baby boomers are the result! LOL Lou

There are a lot of people who swear by planting seeds at certain stages of the moon phase. Personally I've not found it any more effective to plant some seeds while the moon is waxing or vice versa but when we deal with living things, nothing is entirely certain.

I've got rhthym. And nearly six kids. And I am not Catholic. LOL

Thank you for your educated answer Baa. I plant by season and temps. It seems to be the most simple and it works.

Music in my head and a song in my heart. :P And a bun in the oven! LOL

YES< I go by the moon phases when planting things in the ground. The moon phases and the earths gravitational pull are linked. and my mother and her mother and my grandfather who was a commercial farmer swear by it that the roots will grow faster especially in the heat of the summer she stays on me about planting stuff out of the growing phase she says if the moon is shrinking your roots shrink to, I have noticed that when the moon is shrinking and you dig a hole and put your plant in it, there is never enough dirt to go back in it, Something to think about

I haven't tried this planting method, I always just plant when the garden has been tilled in the spring, on a nice day, when there is time to do it, etc. Since the moon effects the tides there is a very strong effect there that might help or hinder other things as well, especially living things. Maybe I should plant half my seeds according to moon phases and half my regular way and see what difference it makes. Interesting thought.

My father-in-law planted by this method and had some great crops! I've done a little of it when I remember and I do think it makes a difference, at least in vegetable crops.

Using this method couldn't hurt. And there are many testimonials in the positive. I am going to look into it, as I don't have any method or ideas that I have been using for vegetables.

Plus a new forum has been created for Hydroponics. Wouldn't it be nice to have fresh tomatoes in the winter? http://davesgarden.com/f/hydropon
