I've been watching toooo much TV lately. I've become addicted to those "make-you-over" shows on TLC. There are a couple of them.. "What not to wear", "date patrol", shows like that. Folks are given the opportunity to let a team of professionals completely change their appearance, through makeup, new hairstyles, new clothes, the works. A few days ago, one show madeover a younger lady, about my age, and instead of looking like a teenager, she looked really fantastic when they were done.
Would you do it if someone came up to you and offered? I would! I'm always answering questions about "when I'll be done with college", or other "how young are you really?" sort of questions. I know some of you would really enjoy answering questions that address you as younger than you really are, but I get annoyed by it. Just once I'd like someone to ask me *when* I *have* finished school, instead of *when do I expect to finish*... :)
I'm curious what everybody else would do if someone offered to "make you over"
Makeovers - would you do it?
Don't think I would...except perhaps for whiter teeth. I'm afraid I'd be too lazy to keep up with the finished product. What you see is what you get. LOL
i have the application for extreme makeover show saved already -just have to print it up!!
yes id love to get a makeover!!!
PICK ME PICK ME! ;)
I would! My neice is amassing photos of her sister to "turn her in to the 'what not to wear' show."
When I was in VA after the KY RU, this sister (I was staying with her) came in from work and said "You have an appointment with my hairdresser tomorrow" It turns out the she THOUGHT I would get my gray locks dyed...but the hairdresser and I decided on just a frosting job. I love it! Jo
My best friend (a man) and I have joked about the shows they do where 2 people swap houses and do a make-over. We agree we each are the only ones we would DARE to let the other do a make-over, LOL.
I'm like Ginger... What you see is what you get... and I'm staisfied with it. Of course, I'm now at retirement ago so I've had LOTS of practice at changing things over the years.
I would go for a makeover if I didn't have to alter anything permanently. There is a show on TV where they do plastic surgery, change your teeth, you lose weight, etc. You are gone from your family for a while. I wouldn't want to do that.
And Angel, one day you will wish for those days when people think you're younger :) Perhaps they are saying "when will you..." so they don't offend you for thinking you are younger. :)
Growing pains....LOL, they never stop. Kathy
thats the show im talking about extreme make over on abc-plastic surgery, new teeth-heck yeah id do it and 8weeks in hollywood for recovery-vacation!
All very interesting responses. And, no, I don't see a time coming in my life when I will appreciate being addressed and treated as younger than I am. At the age I'm at, it can easily become belittling and insulting. Too often people my age, or slightly older than me are too quick to address me as "the little one". It is insulting to receive those sort of comments. Unless you've been in that situation, you can't relate.
If I work incredibly hard to "dress the part", I can add maybe a couple years to my "perceived age". Still, that doesn't even come close to my real age, so it's difficult.
I wouldn't do a plastic surgery makeover - instead, I'd love to know how to improve what God gave me.
How young, oops, old are you? When I was 16, I looked older than when I was 21. Now I am a grandmother of 4, 46 years old and if if weren't for my gray hair (here and there :)), people think my 22 yo daughter and I are sisters.
My GM, when she passed away, was 85 years old and looked about 20 years younger. I think it has something to do with the skin.
Believe it or not, I've never spent a lot of time in the sun, even though we are farmers. I cover up, or go out when its not so hot out. I think it helps. :) Happy Day, Kathy
Nah, Kathy, admit it!! You have found the fountain of youth and just don't want to share it with your older DG buddies.
well I never
You might want to check out on getting a different hair style and also get some tips on make-up.
A new hair style would help and even how your make-up is applied can make a person look older, or for some; younger.
I have found the Fountain of Youth? Yippee!!!
CoCo, my hair is waist length and I wear it back in a pony tail. Could that be why I look younger also? :) Kathy
WELL, i'm making an appointment for a perm right now! Any one ever hear of the atkins diet?
I just turned 40, and I've always looked older than I am. It was great when I was 'too young', being perceived as older, but it got old fast. Fortunately, I'm over it.
Anyway, speaking as someone who USED to take great pains with her appearance, I wouldn't do one of those make-over things with a gun to my head.
There ain't enough hours in the day as it is, without wasting time with the makeup and the hair. For what? so it can run down my face while I sweat in the garden? I don't think so. Take me as I am, or leave me alone - that's the way I feel about it.
But hey, whatever floats your boat ... go for it.
Cheri'
LOL, Well LADIES I'd definitely be up for a makeover, especially if it included body and foot massages, WKND getaway with the LUSH and PLUSH! Denise
I would love a make over but fear it wouldn't do much good. I would really love a massage also.
I would certainly like a makeover, Don't think I would want anyone to color my hair , but I in the past year and half I have lost 50 pounds. I would love a face lift and a few other tucks now.
Since I mostly spend time on my farm and garden when I'm not a work, I couldn't see putting lots of time on my nails or anything like that.
HoniBee, I'm with you on the massage
Angel, everyone's always thought I was younger than I am. The last time I was carded for buying alcohol I was around 28. I think it's great now - I'm still celebrating my 39th. I think it's good genes.
I've watched a lot of make over shows. Sometimes I think the makeover is great and other times I think the person looks awful. I think I would like a makeover on my hair. I've worn it the same way for years. But I would hate something I would have to fuss with. My niece is a hairdresser so I might have her try something different. I never wear makeup so that would be no good for me.
I agree with CoCo - a new hairstyle could do wonders. How many years are they off?
Usually, folks are off by about 5-6 years .... Since I'm young, that's a lot of years, and that puts me back in college.
I don't know if I am going to take immediate action, but I do think it'd be a fun adventure.
I know what you mean, When I was younger and pushing one baby in a stroller and had the other in tow people would say haw cute they were and was I babysitting. When they learned that I was their mother they were shocked and flabergasted. Boy, you must have started very young to have two children already. It used to bother me, but now, I relish the fact that I looked much younger then my years. Oh, to be able to turn back the clock. Believe me sweetie, it does catch up with you much too soon and you should enjoy your youthful appearence while you have it. I'm 54 and age has finally caught up to me. But it's been kind. Thank you God.
Jan
I also am a you get what you see type.. I'm either working in my yards or on some of the farm equipment.. I try my best to keep sunscreen applied, even that's hard in southwest GA heat and humidity..Many days out in the fields it it 3 digit temps, and 99% humidity. My hair is still long and mostly up in a ponytail..I have always been considered girlish and most don't think I am my age(47)..Hey, I still feel like that wild young girl, but I know better..Age catches us all sooner or later..lol..Most make overs are too fancy for my lifestyle, but go for it..
Larkie
Hmmm, if I ever make it to any of the roundups maybe I should bring a color bottle and my scissors... make-overs for plants anyone?
John...You're on!! Cactus coming your way...and I want to be blonde!! Jo
Sometimes I get the urge to have my hair cut....it's been long (almost waist-length) for most of my life. Every once in a while I think I would like to do something really radical to it like cut it really short. But I always chicken out! The most I've cut it was about 8 inches a couple years ago. I would probably go for a new hair cut by a REAL professional, but that's about it. But the Trading Spaces show that Darius was talking about? My friend and I wanted to do that, but we live about 6 miles from each other and they wouldn't do it because it was too far apart! And some of those rooms are frightening when they are done with them!! With my luck I'd get the lady who paints everything BLACK!!
Sierrawoman - would that be the same lady that put straw on the walls? I'd be very afraid myself.
yeah, I think it was one and the same!! LOL
John, you are on here too! I would LOVE a make-over especially if I came out of it a much smaller size with smaller feet. I recently got my hair cut in long layers and I am really upset at the cut that I got. My hair is natually curly except at the crown of my head and this cut makes the straight hair drop down over the curls and it looks ridiculous. lol
As far as the house goes I would take either of the designers on the show Suprise by Design anytime. I love both of their ideas. But as for Trading Spaces, unless I can get Frank or Vern I don't want them in MY house.
Ponditis, maybe your hairperson could do a mild body wave on top to even out the curl? Or better yet, maybe you need the new japanese thermal straightening on the curly parts! This process leaves you with perfectly straight hair, no frizz at all, and lasts until cut off.
LOL Lani, my hair is much the same! If I get hot, all my hair curls except the crown! I was thinking the same as John! Get an experienced designer/stylist to perm the top or if you look good with straight hair (which I do not) you can straighten the rest. :)
Since I outgrew the 'made up' look, I don't know that I would like a makeover. I don't want to look like I have on a ton of make up. I would take the plastic surgery (put things back where they were originally and suck out some of the extra LOL). And count me in for any massages!
I think the best solution is to have babies late in life--so people assume you're younger than you are. Or choose your parents well (young looking ones!) LOL
I'm 54 and proud of it. I'm happier now than I've been in my whole life & more confident. Why change it?
I had my youngest child at age 35....didn't do a thing for me except people would ask...Is that your Granddaughter?? I had a Grandson when she was 5 years old! But...I really enjoyed her and would do it all over again. Jo
John, I have had four or five perms in my life and none of them made my hair curly. They only made it hard to comb and one was frizzy. I hate to try another because of my track record. This last hairdresser came highly recommended but I think she doesn't know what to do with my hair since I don't realy want bangs as I want to be able to pull the hair back from my eyes when we handle hay.
I have been thinking of buying one of the home hair straighteners. I do worry about what it would do to my dry hair ( dry from my medications) as I don't want to bake it and lose it.
Makeup??? What is THAT?????? When I take off my glasses to apply I can't see anything to make up so I don't. Saves a ton of money and time. LOL
Lani, forget the home straighteners!! Unless you are ready for the Mia Farrow-pixie look! Don't make me come out there, I will.
How about that permanent make-up? You know, where they tattoo eyeliner on so so never have to again? Imagine if a woman had done that in the 60's, when it was a harsh black line about 1/4 inch think!
John
OK John. I NNNEEEEEDDDDD YOU right now and I don't mean maybe! This hair looks terrible when I don't do the shower thing twice daily. ARGHHHHHHHH
I don't really understand the permanent make-up thing at all. When styles change you are stuck with what you had put on and then when you are older and the make-up should be softened for lighter skin tone it is still the make-up of your youth. Not for me.
Lani, you're right. Whatever look we think is 'classic' now will look 'dated' before we know it.
I had the permanent eyeliner applied about ten years ago when I was having reactions to eye makeup. It is very faint and unless I tell someone that I have it on, they don't even notice. I don't even see it in the mirror anymore - basically a faint line of light brown around the eye lashes, hardly noticeable.
So, mine won't be too scary when I'm an old crone. I suspect most of it will have faded by then, as tatoos usually do.
When I go work out at the gym in the morning, there is a girl there with the permanent eyeliner (very black). I have to say it looks good, but it seems so out of place for the gym at 6:00am. I could be I'm just jealous because I look so bad at that time just rolling out of bed.
Has anyone seen the latest People Magazine? They show some people who have had a lot of work done. There is one lady who had a lot of stuff done on her face (a lot of money) and her husband saying how he wanted it done, because she had a great body but was looking too old for him.
I say now that she looks good, dump him. He should have appreciated her for how she looked, growing older with him.
I'm just to cheap and afraid of pain to do anything (although I do color my hair) and my husband loves me for me. I still see him as when we were married 18 years ago and he sees me the same.
I'd do one of those makeovers in a hearbeat!
and my husband keeps asking me if I have applied to xtreme makeover yet cause he knows I'm not happy with some things ...I turned 45 today and I know I'm suppose to look 29...LOL
Hi Angelsong: I'm up in Transylvania County NC, just north of Greenville County so, Howdy Neighbor! I live up in Lake Toxaway, not too far from Brevard.
I'd go for it all if I had a makeover. I'd get dental work done, give myself a bit more of a jawline, get some liposuction, work with a personal trainer, and maybe get a new hairdo (not color, I found a light red with lighter highlights that I love). Now if they'd just come up with a neck lift.......
As for the makeover in my house; I'm doing one now with most of the work being done by my spousal unit. I am making good use of thrift shops because there are 6 in our little county and I have found some wonderful bargains......
