Lily Lovers Look here!

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

I just got the B&D Spring lily catalogue. I've been getting kind of a thing for Oriental lilies the last couple of years. This hadn't worried me until I logged onto DG and read through some of your threads --- NOW I'm worried! Anyway in years past (and gardens past) when I grew Orientals the common knowledge was that Orientals were only planted in the Fall, but I gather storage methods are improved now and they are more plantable in the Spring, but does that apply to climates like Iowa where you couldn't get them in the ground until maybe April or May, and a month later it hits 90 in the shade, or should one only plant them in Spring, when your Spring is in February, like Oregon? I've already circled Warrior's Revenge, whose "huge, spotted, crimson-red flowers suggest the passion of a wronged warrior".

zonedenial, i live here in massachusetts and we get cold here and i planted my lilies in april and may last year. our winter lasted well into april thus the later planting dates and they grew nicely. i'm sure they will look better this year. the only difference i noticed, was they blossomed later than if they were planted in the fall, but i'm sure that will turn around this june and july. i had a list somewhere of the times and order they bloom in but i don't know where it is now. i do know that the oriental is last.

iowaron, your leslie woodruff is gorgeous. i just love the lily garden catalogue. it is a true lily lovers wish book.

i find the airy foliage of cosmos looks nice with the taller lily varieties.

zonedenial,
did you receive my email in regard to the Iowa Round-up?

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

TLC,
Sent you an e-mail this A.M.; I had been in Mexico for a few days so just got around to replying to your e-mail. Unfortunately we are probably going to be in Philadelphia the weekend of the Iowa roundup... maybe next year? If plans change I'll sign on ... does anyone make a good margarita at the roundup? Just curious, you know.
Don

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I can make a good margarita! but maybe yext year for you !

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

Iowaron(007) pages are printed, almanac has been consulted for the light of the moon, and my black attire has been selected! When the snow melts we'll be ready. Anahi (008)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

zone,
got it! Was worried it had bounced; will keep you on the list for next year!

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

debi,
Thanks for your info and encouragement on Spring planting of oriental lilies; now I just have to quit circling lilies in the B&D catalogue before I get terminal writer's cramp. Lily Dad's Trophy:"Crinkled, icy-white edges accent the crisp, very, very red, up-to-outfacing, 10 inch flowers". Well, maybe just one more.
Don

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Well I figured those pages had already been printed so I went ahead and finished updating (and deleting). Oh btw, I have a very large animal coming to live in the back yard. Be Careful 007 & 008 he'll be waiting for you!

zonedenial, so sorry to hear you won't make the RU this year. I also have a problem saying when. I want them all and I want them when I see them. If I didn't garden I'd be rich!

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, there is one thing keeping me from spending more on flowers: my wife's idea that we should have enough money left over after buying flowers to go to the grocery store any old time there isn't anything to eat in the house! I've tried reason with her but she has a lot to put up with me, so though I don't agree with her, I'll continue to humor her on this one.
Don

Johnston, IA(Zone 5a)

I know exactly what you mean Don. It's probably a good thing that our spouses keep us in balance, otherwise I know our checkbook wouldn't. And we are darned lucky to have wives that want to keep us fed.But it sure feels good to just go nuts once in a while to "feed the passion".

Debi_z, Thanks for the kind words and the super tip about planting cosmos with the taller lilies. I will definitely give that a go this year. There are some of the "seashell" colors that I really like. Good idea!

Now Llilyfan, don'cha go buying no big people eater for your back yard. My DW says I can't come out after dark and go on any missions with 008 (Anahi) unless she's along, and she's not about to go poaching other people's plants in the dark:-(
So we'll just have to wait and see what you bring to Round-Up :-)
Iowaron

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

Iowaron..tell YDW that it's not by the DARK of the moon, it's by the LIGHT of the moon. Come on P.R! It'll be fun! You can go shopping for a new black outfit.:-) Tee hee hee!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

I already own this people eater, or maybe he owns me.

Well anahi, if ron's DW won't let him come out in the dark maybe we should team up and raid his place! 009

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

Ummmm! llilyfan(009), I like how you think! New plans are developing. Lets do it AFTER the mastergardeners tour. That way we will have the opportunity to scope the grounds while we are on the tour. Undercover work,ya know!? (Sneaky smiles!) Tee Hee!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Works for me, that way we will be able to 'keep Ron in the dark' about our conspiracy. (Sneaky smile and shifty looks here.)

(009) oops forgot my number!

llilyfan,
I quess I won't be needing my tranquillizer darts anymore...What is that massive beast you have in your backyard? Ya know,,,,,,It might leave bigger holes in your flower beds than Ron and I would have. (:D 008

In the true spirit of a Gentleman, and since tomorrow is "Valentine's Day", I submit 'Sweet Surrender'to 008 & 009. :-)

If you are ever looking for a lily to plant in a container, 'Virginia' does well for us. It only gets about 18" tall and is a striking focal point in a container.

'Sweet Surrender' is certainly sweet!!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Just when I think we might have it all ironed out, 'he' goes and Surrenders so sweetly.

anahi you are right as to the size of the holes that would be left if 'Scorch' were in the garden. He is my 16 hand horse, although he acts more like a dog or a goat than a horse!

I was thinking quite seriously about doing some smaller orientals in pots this year. I am going to do the hypertufa thing the first of March when I can keep the curing pots from freezing. Now I have my first selection! Some others I was thinking about were: 'Miss Birma', 'Rodolfa', 'Souvenir', and an orienpet that is supposed to be only 16" 'Early Yellow'.

Showing ignorance here: what does (:D mean?

has anyone seen the new double oriental lily 'miss lucy'? she is gourgeous and very unique of course. she is an exclusive to Van bourgondien. and also very expensive. 1 bulb for $15.00. well i think that is expensive anyhow. here is the link.

llilyfan (:D is a smiley face! Looks like one with a hood over her eyes ready to sneak through a garden!

Cici Put something over to cover overnight if the temp will be back tomorrow. I have used towels, sheets, and blankets when there is a frost and my flowers are peaking out.

Also remember that a lily eventually IS above ground...so don't discount the moola for it!

LimeyLisa , do the lily leaves die off? i bought 19 different kinds this year... and i must have at least 50 to 75 planted.. i have been planting flowers that i can look at now.. hubby bought me a 3 ft gardenia shrub , that is covered in blooms.. one was already open and two are opening now.. dont get me wrong I HAVE BECOME ADDICTED TO LILYS and i have never even grown one...lol.. i also bought severa 'winter jasmines full of blooms and a passion vine.. thats why i said i need to buy things i can see now... i dont dare go look at that lily again...lol.. it IS very tempting.. i am just now starting to garden at this property and i have sooooo much to get planted.. u know what i mean.. so stop tempting me limeylisa!!!!! lololol.... thanx for the info on the lily!!! LimeyLisa......I dont know the names of the ones I posted photos of. The red one came from Katrina, here on Daves Garden and was not named. The others came from Walmart!!

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Well Sharon, they are both very pretty!

cici, I haven't bought any lilies for my garden. Yet, that is. So I can only assume that they die back, but I have faith that they will be above ground for you sooner or later. I'll try to stop tempting you, if only I could stop tempting ME! LOL

ok truce, limeylisa...lol... yes i can imagine that they will be up sooner or later... hey i read somewhere when u cover things for frost u had to make sure the material u use doesnt touch the plant... is that true or just true with like plastics??? no frost last night.. now i am gonna have to go read about those lilies in that bed and see when these lilies are suppose to be comming up... hmmmm... itsnt it a little early for them to be coming up already??? hope i can remember which ones are in that bed...

Bamasharon, the first looks like a daylily. i wouldn't even begin to try guessing which one, but you can show it to the folks in the daylily forum. daylily and lilies(lilium) are two entirely different plant species. i like daylilies but i looooooooooooooooooove lilium. a daylily is a rhizome and a lilium is a bulb. the foliage is very different too.
the second picture looks like the orange one is an asiatic lily, the one below it looks like a stargazer oriental lily. in my experience stargazer is an early bloomer. i bet your orange asiatic is a late bloomer, thus they are over lapping. you can try to i.d. it through a google search, or going to bulb catalogue sites, or infor sights like the lily society.
good luck.
well cici you are doing the right thing by planting your bushes and vines first, that is for sure. when i started gardening, i'll be in my 5th season this year (hard to believe- seems like i was just posting my first newbie questions here not long ago) i'm learning though as i go along and the one thing i love about gardening is that it is always a work in progress.

thank you all for the smiles this morning. does my heart good.
debi z

who mentioned trying the dwarfs in pots this year.?? i tried asiatic lolypop in a container and it didn't do that well, but now i've come to understand that they dislike direct afternoon sun and that was probably why i got on 5 out of 6 stems, and only 1 bloom. :-(

also, i found out where i had seen the list of the order that lilium blossom in cooler climates.

1st the asiatic in june with a vast array of colors
1 1/2 the asiapets that mix asiatics and trumpet lilies.
2nd the trumpets and aurelians in july start to perfume the air
3rd the orienpet's blossom through july and into august
4th and last but not least is the orientals in late july and august.
the last species lily to blossom is lilium speciosum var. rubrum.

hope everyone had a nice valentines day. debi z & franklin

cici, I had never heard there was a problem like that. Covered stuff up several times with no problem, but then I've never used plastic. Maybe someone else will have an answer.

LimeyLisa Kay

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

debi_z,

It was I who wants to try growing the dwarf orientals in pots this summer.

I am going to use those thick foam type pots that don't weigh anything. And now I know to keep them on the east side of the house rather than in the backyard which is full sun from 10 am til 8 pm.

Thanks for your input, I too just LOVE my lilies. I am still learning everyday something new so I can grow them better by providing an environment they love and not just tolerate.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Ive let them uncovered before right along with my daylilys and anything else that thinks its brave enough. The tips get frostbite and may die later but after a short while you cant tell anything happend to them at all. The only time I really worry about covering is late fall when the weather is really weird and some things start to pop up before winter even sets in, like those silly crocus. I havnt lost one yet.

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

hey dravencat...how ya been?? (: funny fall is ur time that u worry..mine is right before spring because the weather is wacked.. last night was rather warm for this time of year... but i still wanted to cover my lily up cuz u never know....(:
and yeah debbie z... i planted my lilies in dec. which it was warm enough.. we dont get snow here so i didnt have to worry about that.. and we havent gotten barely anything for rain this season.. i am now just having to break out the mower to mow the longer patches of grass/weeds... i have more weeding to do though then mowing.. .. anyway, i covered the new lily sprout with a towel last night just incase.. ... i did plant stargazer in there i am wondering if it is stargazer popping out of there.. hmmmmm

chrissy, i know nothing about your zone, so i can't give you an answer.

all....i posted a link, in the bulb forum, to follow to dutch gardens to get $25 off of a $50 order.!!!!
good shopping.

LOLOLOLOL...OMG RON!!!!!LOLOLOL ... now if we had cool snow men like that around here i wouldnt mind the snow one bit!!!!! lololol thats my kinda winter party, bud ice (right?) , cards and cold hard cash!!!! heeeyyyy where are the smokes? lol... that is TOO cute! i may have to send that pic to my mom...(: i JUST HAAAAAD to open my BIG mouth about us not having any rain, forecast says expect rain for the next 5 to 7 days!!!! ugh! i hate rain.. i know i know, we NEED it.. we are 5 inches below normal for this time of year. ... we are suppose to get 4 inches this weekend alone.. there goes my driveway.. hope i can make it out of the mud during and after the rain... the mud is something horrible when we get alot of rain at once ... its all clay... i have lost many a shoe in the mud during the long hard rains.. not finding them till spring when i "happen" to be digging in that spot.. u sink right up to ur ankles ..lol.. anyway thanx for the great pic.. it made me smile.. seems i needed that today..(:
