Chrissy, orienpets are a hybrid result of a cross between and oriental and a trumpet lily. Yes, the fragrance can easily fill an entire room. I had 1 Silk Road blossom in the house and it perfumed the entire downstairs for about 5 days.
Here is my trumpet 'Black Dragon strain' very fragrant about 5 ft tall last season.
Lily Lovers Look here!
chrissy, guess I forgot to answer the second part. A lot of the nurseries sell them both spring and fall. Mostly as bare bulbs in the fall and sometimes in the spring also. I personally think you have a better stalk if you plant them in the fall and let them get their roots established. I also see lots of potted lilies for sale in the spring and early summer.
'America' an asiatic
ohhh.. i may go check out my nurseys around here and see if its not too late to buy some.. i am feeling quite obsessed...lol... i want all the smell good ones and fill the whole front acrage with smell good lilies....lol.. well i dont think i could afford that but once they multiply i will... by the way lilyfan , what do the new offsets look like on the mother bulb .... ohhh i cant wait till sping...
chrissy
chrissy, they look like little bulbs, sometimes they are just under the soil and some even up on the stalk above the soil. They can also be all along the underground part of the stem. Some of mine this year ranged from the size of walnuts down to marble sized. I lined out 267 baby bulbs this fall and I'm hoping some of the larger ones will bloom next June-Aug.
The orientals don't seem to be quite as prolific as the asiatics, but that's ok because they give the mass of color and the orientals tucked here and there perfume the entire garden.
Sue
Oh Lilyfan - what beautiful pictures!!!!! I love all of the pictures in fact. I am curious about your friend Iowaron from Waukee. That is where we moved from to come to Chariton. Just really excited about all the newbies from Iowa in 2003!!!! Can't wait for the roundup to meet and greet everyone - welcome aboard!!! Have you got all your co-op bulbs planted yet Sue? All planted and tucked in here, whew didn't know if I was going to make it in time before the weather gaveway to whatever it is doing outside tonight.
Iowagal, Yes, all my co-op bulbs are in the ground or the refridgerator waiting to be forced. It is a good thing my puter went down or I might have ordered a third time!
I'll email you about iowaron, you might know him or a couple other people from there also.
So GOOD to see you on the boards again. Thanks for the compliments, the subject makes it easy to take nice pictures.
Sue, I'm glad you started this thread. Have really enjoyed everyone's pictures. Such beauty in each and every one of them, but I do like that Iowa Rose that Ron put up. Welcome to the garden, Ron. It's great to see another Iowa member. You aren't very far from where the next roundup will be held. If you are familiar with Chariton and Red Haw State Park, it is only about an hour from you. Hope you will join us. Someone will get all the information to you after we have firmed up the plans. Again, this was a great thread. I'm almost talked into growing lilies once again.
Shirley
Shirley, oh yes you should (grow lilies again!) I too love that Iowa Rose. It is on my want and gotta have lists! Love the color and the fact that it is outfacing. I really like Tinos and Night Flyer and Black Jack also. Ok so this is an addiction, but it is a beautiful addiction!
Getting close to the end of this year's pictures.
'Moonstruck' an asiatic
Hi Shirley,
I am not familiar with the Chariton area yet, but I have a feeling that this will change in the Spring. Sue said the next Roundup is in May perhaps? I too enjoy all the lily pictures posted here, and sincerely appreciate Sue's expertise and passion. I've attached a picture of a double flowering lily, 'Aphrodite'. Some like it, others don't. It's certainly different.
Thank you all for making me feel welcome in Dave's Garden. I enjoy learning from you and sharing with you.
Ron
hey guys.. still loven those pics... got another question... i went to my local nursery yesterday.. and asked if they had any oriental lilies in.. she said no, that they freeze here and they wont be in till spring.. she was rather rude and short for one.. and what does she mean they will freeze here... it was 70 degrees yesterday and predicted to be 76 to 78 today.. i think last night dropped to 45.. but we dont get snow and very very rarely get frost.. so what is she talking about and does any frost kill lilies? i thought this was a good time to plant so they can develope a good root system... plus i got the trumpet lilies at home depot last month.... can someone let me know what she is talking about... thanx
chrissy
cici77, I also find it strange that nurseries promote lilies to be planted in spring. And they get bent out of shape when you suggest otherwise. I presume it must be a marketing thing.
My theory is that they have us trained, buy tulips in fall and lilies in spring. So long as we go along with that plan, it's not too hard for them to keep their stock straight. Then along comes you and me and throw a monkey wrench in it.
What if everyone started to think like us? Gads! They would have to stock all sorts of stuff in the fall. And their big spring season might not be as big. Heaven forbid the fall planted bulbs might do so well we wouldn't want to replace them next year ... Heck, we might end up with more than we need and start giving them away! It would cause problems. Much better to make us feel stupid and send us on our way.
But I'm a bit cynical about these things. ;-)
Cheri'
hi cheri, thanx for the info... the lady was very RUDE... she had confused me a little when she said they would freeze.. i thought to myself.. hmmmm.. does this mean i would have to dig them up next fall to prevent them from freezing??? i mean i live in one of the mildest winters , and so far this fall has been mostly warm and clear.. we have had a few days of rain here and there with some chilly wind but most of the time its clear and cool or even warm.. the news is saying thanksgiving is going to be in the 80's ... so i just disregarded her and left... i thought i would post it here just to be sure... some of these nursery people irritate me... this lady who ownes the nursery is the same lady this summer when i was looking for a job i replied to her "now hiring" add.. she basicly told me she wanted someone who was in school for plants and such... then 2 months later called me saying she had hired a student and the students father got sick so she gave her 2 weeks off and the girl never returned... and at that point she wanted me to come to work for her... but i had already decided to stay home and take care of our ranch and start covering our place in trees and flowers and such... but it kills me that she would rather have someone in school learning about plants and trees instead of someone who LOVES gardening and has had experiance with disieses and pests in gardens and trees ... unfortunately she carries trees that no other local nursery does, and her prices for the hard to find trees are quite reasonable... oh well.. i will still get all my golden chain trees for my driveway from her.... unless i go to san diego or near LA, maybe i can get them even cheaper in those areas... lol... anyway going out to finish trimming out my barn style shed...
chrissy
Hey Ron, nice clear pink color on those lilies. I have a few double amaryllis and I'm not sure I like them, so I probably won't run right out and get Aphrodite! Then again it is unusual and I do like unusual!
Chrissy, the poor woman must have really been caught off guard to be rude like that. If freezing is going to harm oriental lily bulbs then all of us in at least zones 7-3 are going to have lots of holes next spring! So far that hasn't happened to me. I have planted lilies in the spring, the plant doesn't flower real well, but it does have a whole growing season to establish itself for the next year. Really do prefer fall planting however.
I to don't understand the hiring practices of some of the greenhouses. I applied at one of our local nurseries and was told I needed to be able to 'count back change' and that since I could they would be getting in touch with me when the season got closer. When I went to buy some bedding plants the girl who waited on me just dumped my change into my hand! So much for 'counting back change!
hello all... well i did it!!!! i went into the VB site and ordered two of several lilies... and its all u guys fault!!!! lol.. i had no idea they were doing the 33% end of the season sale.. i know some of the areas say 25% off but not till i clicked on the buy it button did i notice it was 33% off... anyway i ordered Muscadet, 'Black Beauty', 'Tiger Rose' , Dizzy, and Hotlips....just two of each ... so i could buy more varietys... all for $23.00 plus shipping , i am so excited!
Liliefan, this lady is not usually friendly...but i may have taken her off guard... oh well... and guys i finished the Barn trim... although i did mess up one cut that i just couldnt get with my jig, so when hubby got home he fixed it for me... lol.. and while he did that i made little picket fence flower beds for my lilies and Glads. , my mom gave me an antique window to hand on my barn.. it is from the 1930's and is all diamond cut glass with the white wood trim... anyway it will look great on the front of the barn with the picket fence beds on either side of the barn dutch door... i made the picket fence out of the contractors redwood stakes and wood,... i made them 42 inches wide , 15 inches deep... i'll have to take a pic when i finish it then maybe another pic with the flowers in bloom,.. anyway thought i would share my excitement over the lilies and the beds i'm making!!! oh and i will eventually get into daylilies , but i have to stick to one addiction at a time... otherwise my hubbies wallet would shrivel up right in his pocket and i think he would notice that... (: Happy Turkey Day!!!!!!
chrissy
Cici-would love to see a pix of your barn.
Although it wasn't at a nursery, I looked at the computer screen of a store I went to lately, and it actually told the clerk how many of each coin to give me back in change! They don't even need to "count" anymore. I wonder what happens if he runs out of dimes? Will he know that two nickles = one dime? What are we doing in this world but dumbing down the employees? No wonder you can't find good help! I would put down LOL, but I'm not sure it is a laughing matter! Okay, I'll get off the soap box and let someone else have a turn.

Lily you gotta get into species Lilies
e.g Lilium nepalense is only a few feet high and runs underground so you dont know where it will pop up next. There is one for which the name evades me right now which towers to 10 feet+
Masrk... a 10 foot tall lily?
yep they are in a friends garden. I'm 5'10" and when I reach up I can only touch the bottom flowers
here is a quote from a specialist bulb group I belong to
L. auratum is one of my favorites and a long time resident of many gardens. Introduced in 1862 from Japan, it was responsible for the poor reputation lilies had for many years as being difficult to grow. The reason being the
roots were often removed prior to packing, and in transit they lost much moisture resulting in poor quality bulbs being sold. Modern transport and packing methods plus being raised from seed in this country enables top
quality bulbs to be purchased. The height the species can reach is quite amazing, 7 feet not being unusual and reaching over 10 feet in ideal conditions.
Ron, here you go feeding that addiction again!
Chrissy, can hardly wait to see pics of the barn. Sounds lovely without the flowers, but pure heaven when they are in bloom and peeking through and over the picket fence. So glad to see you have stooped to the lily level. I'm 'redoing' my little chicken house and incorporating it into my landscape, so I truly am interested in the barn's face-lift!
Mark, I am starting to poke my nose into the species lilies also. I bought a couple of L. Cerneum this fall and I have the darling little turks cap. I will have to look for these two that you have mentioned. A lily that runs sounds intriguing. I have a few lilies that get to 6 ft, but 10 ft would be a real traffic stopper.
OH NO!!!!! i dont EVEN want to hear, see or speak of another type of lily.. i am telling my mom and my sisters and even my brother inlaws about how beautiful lilies are and how wonderful they smell.. its quite pathetic really... lol... and as far as my "barn" lilyfan and mark, its actually a "barn style" shed.. its only 12x12, hubby originally built it for me for a horse tack barn/shed... but soon turned into a tool shed for him till our house is built... and then it will turn back into my horse tack and of COURSE garden shed/barn for this area of our property... the house is gonna be about 300 ft from this barn/shed so he will have to just build me another one closer to the house.. ( yeah right! if he EVER has the time) but really he is gonna have to build me something once the house is built.. or he can get me the material and my sister and i can try and build it ourselves.. i helped him (and did alot of watching) with this barn/shed... anyway.. although its not HUGE like a barn... it sure is made up like a barn,.. hubby built it two years ago... he bought me my own tool set this Christmas ( i got it early cuz i am a bratt..lol) so i trimmed it out in tha barn style like it was suppose to be two years ago.. and i love it.. it looks soooo cute.. as far as the picket fence its not a regular sized picket fence...i made it out of contractors wooden stakes.. they are only about 1 ft high... so its a mini picket fence.. so the lilies will be towering over them i am sure.. but i will have other flowers peeking above the fencing.. i would have finished them today.. but we have horrid winds today...60mph constant gusts... i had to take my hammock down and the wind broke my horse wind stand.. i hate this kind of wind.. u can hardly breath when ur out in it.. it takes ur breath away... anyway... i will still post a pic before i finished the barn/shed and after ... and of course when all the flowers are in bloom.. (: we plan on building a BIG (real) barn after the house is done.. we are in the process of building the house now.. we are getting the electric in and running the water line to the house ... i just cant wait till the framing is up.. ahhhh to see a house like figure, i hope i dont die from the shock!!!! ok enough about me and my house...lol
limeyLisa i know what u mean about how rediculas the requirements are for being hired at some of these places, i couldnt believe the lady at the nursery wanted someone in school for the job... AND she is paying min. wage... AND only wanted someone part time... amazing to me... anyway i am off to bed.. and i hope all of u had a great turkey day... (:
chrissy
chrissy, that's ok! (about your barn being a shed) My chicken coop is only 6' by 7'. I know what you mean by not wanting to learn of another type of lily. Alas, it is TOO late for me, I've already gone from addiction to obsession!
I'd love to have a tack shed, right now the saddles have a predominate spot in the tv room right next to the Lazy-boys!
another lily photo: White Elf, a dwarf asiatic: see anything strange with this one?
only 4 petals.
I encourage all to read the small but powerful poem entitled "Wishing" on the inside front cover of your brand new Spring 2004 McClure & Zimmerman flower bulb catalog.
If yours hasn't arrived yet, you can access the poem on their home page, www.mzbulb.com
Ron
Mark, yup only 4 petals, there were 5 bulbs in this grouping and all 5 opened buds with only 4 petals. I am curious about this coming June and wondering if they will do the same thing. Guess I'll just have to wait.
Ron, that poem puts the action where it belongs, with me rather than waiting for someone else 'to do something about it!' And they say it so elegantly to top it all. Thanks for sharing. Sue
lol well lilyfan... at least u have saddles.., i had one when i was first given my Appaloosa, Chief, but he was 18 when i got him 3 years ago and was very barn sour, plus i think he might have been abused... and i had never had a horse before him , so i did the big no-no and spoiled him rotten.. almost treated him like u would a dog... a 1200 pound dog...lol... and well now he walks all over me.. even when i tried to regain control..... he does listens to my husband, because he (my hubby) never let him get away with anything... infact i cant even ride him.. he tries to nip at my feet when i am on his back....anyway, he hates saddles... i dont know if he had hurt himself when he flipped over on his back when the people who gave me him were riding him and he got spooked.. the guy on his back kept pulling on the reins and he reared and so the guy pulled even harder and he reared again and flipped on his back... since then he hates saddles.. so i am wondering if he hurt himself... my hubby rides him totally bareback.. not even a bareback saddle.. he is very stubborn and crabby most of the time... the horse that is...lol.. my other horse is half Percheron Draft and half Morgan.. he was a Premrin baby... I got him when he was a year and a half old and he was already almost as big as chief..(chief is 16 hands) and now he is bigger then chief.... he is a beautiful bay, with black mane and tail...he has the kindest eyes.. and has the most playful naughty personality... lol.. the place i got him named him Gremlin (yuck i know) and i tried to change his name but he was such a playful bratt when i got him i just couldnt.. he goes by the nickname 'gremmy' or 'grem-grem'.. and sometimes even 'gemmers' lol.. he really is a good horse.. he loves to be worked.. and loves the attention.. he also listens really well.. my niece this spring is going to train him , i was training him when i first got him and he did soooo good... now they have been in the pasture for the past year and i havent done any work with him because of this building our home project... i just dont have the time.. gremmy is too big for the saddle i have now.. i want to get an aussie saddle.. but that will have to wait... at least till spring... anyway below is a pic of my two babies... this was taken in march of this year.. gremmy is even bigger now... he will be 3 in july 2004 .... (:
chrissy
see what i mean about chief being a grummpy old man?!!! lol.. he was biting at gremmy because he was jealouse of my attention to gremmy.....lol, well i have finished my little picket bed borders for my lilies and am planting the stargazers today.. hey have any of u heard of taking some lily scales off the outter part of the bulb and sticking them in a baggie of peat, and them growing baby bulbs on the end of the scale... i have a book on propogation off all sorts of plants and trees , and they say if u do that and store them in a cool dark place they will produce baby bulbs.... i tried it with a few scales that had fallen off during shipping ... its worth a try instead of just throwing them away...
chrissy
Chrissy, Gremmie sounds a lot like my horse 'Scorch'. He is a saddlebred/qtr cross, coming 8,acts like 2, and most of the time 'the light is on, but nobody's home'! My old horse 'Kidd' is an unregistered qtr horse who is 15, he's too lame to ride, but I can still drive him and he loves it as much as I do. Our other horse 'Zeke' is my DH's and is a 10 year old adopted mustang.
I'll have to reformat some pics and show you each of them. Chief just looks like he is the alpha horse, I'm familiar with that expression! Kidd and Zeke use it with Scorch all the time! Roni, as in Rice a Roni, Scorch's nickname is forever pestering the other two horses to the point that they just get totally fed up with him and then we have another scar forming!
Lily scales, I haven't tried that method myself but I would think it would be about the same as starting seeds. I am doing that. I expect to have blooms in the summer of 2005. I've been told it is a 2 year process from seed. I was going to try the scale method myself, but them I received all those baby bulbs on top of the ones I thinned from my own garden that it just seemed excessive. I'm also not the most patient person in the world, the lily seedlings are going to get some pampering and special attention because they are orienpet seedlings from a lady in our Lily Society.
Sue
Cici and Llily--Glad to see there are other horse lovers on here as well! I too have horses. I raise, breed and show, Saddlebreds. My main show horse is with me on my picture if you click on my name!
LimeyLisa Kay
LimeyLK, Wow what a gorgeous horse! You are way out of my league. We just do trail riding! I am going to try some Competitive Trail this coming summer with Scorch. By the way, Scorch's daddy is a Golden Saddlebred, could you tell?
Now just to stick with the theme, here is another of my lily pics.
Barbaresco an oriental. First bloom from a very small bulb, hoping for better blooms next summer.
He's a little "dark" for a gold saddlebred. Do you know his sire's name?
I'm definately going to have to look into getting some of the lily lilies this next year. I will be digging a new bed in my front yard in the spring and will include them in that.
LimeyLisa Kay
lilyfan , ur horseys are beautiful! and limeylisa, wow ur horse is beautiful too.. he looks very tall!!! how tall is he??? whats his name and how old is he? lilyfan yes chief is clearly the alfa... but whats weird is , when the two are up on the hill visiting the neighbors (they feed them carrots and apples..and play with gremmy with the water hose and such) they say that gremmy is the alfa.. that he kicks at chief, and chases him away.. i was shocked... because when they are around me chief is clearly the top dog... so i dont know what that is all about.. but hubby and i got the barb wire fence poles up for the pasture we are sectioning off for them ... we have ALOT of area to fence off for them... my neighbors sold their property to a cattle farmer and we have to get the horses off their land by next weekend..(not this weekend) we have 660ft x's 2 plus another 800ft of 4 wire barb-wire to run.. YIKES!!! but we have a ton of food for them in the area where they will have their pasture.. the "grass" is 4 ft tall out there... it will nice to have them home.. although they are just right next door... but still they will be closer to me..(:
update on my little red "barn", well it WOULD have been done earlier this week but i got sick and had to stay inside (yuck!) till i got better.. and now i am 90% better so i will be out there today trying desperatly to finish my picket fence beds for my lilys and build the window box for the diamond window i put on the barn..... i cannot wait till i hang my Christmas lights on the barn.. i am just dieing to get them up!!!!! i havent had Christmas lights (all white) on anything for 3 years since we moved out here.... i guess i could have put Christmas lights on the barn last year but it wasnt trimmed out and so i think it would have look retarded... oh plus we just got electric here this aug. ... so i couldnt have put lights on last year... anyway... here is a lily question for oriental lilys, when they say full sun with some shade.... how much sun and shade are we talkin... i heard that the more shade they have the less blooms they have and the taller they get, so how do i know what is too much sun or shade??? thanx guys and i am going to try and get that dang barn done today!!!!!

Cici--He is eight and his registered name is A Flare For Gold, but I call him Gus because he arrived at my place on August 1, 1995. He was only a week old when I bought him. We have come a long way together to get to that picture. His four year old year he bucked through all gaits both way of the ring in every show. I am just happy that the classes weren't filled and the judges were tolerant as long as he wasn't a danger to anyone else but me! He is about 15-3 hands high which is only average for an ASB.
We are still waiting for a pix of that barn of yours! One with the lights on would be extra special!
Poor llilyfan, we hijacked your thread! LOL
;~D
LimeyLisa Kay
Ach; lilies, horses, they are both obsessions with me so who cares.
LLK; So Gus is the same age as Scorch. I don't know his sire's name, they call him Star. He is registered, but to my knowledge has never been shown. He is well into his 20's now.
chrissy; oh how envious I shouldn't be over all that pasture. I have to rent my pasture as I only have an acre at my house and with 3 horses it would soon be a dirt lot!
So sorry to hear you were sick, but glad to hear you are better now.
Sun/shade for orientals, six hours of sun would be good and light shade in the hottest part of the day would be ideal.
and just so the hijacking is only a partial hijack here is another picture.
Speciosum Rubrum very fragrant
echoes, I finally got around to checking out the parentage on Silk Road and looking up Northern Carillon. They sure look the same to me. Parentage is listed as unknown on Silk Road. I'm going to have to try growing Northern Carillon in my gardens so I can do a side by side comparison.
Here is my Scheherazade an orienpet. First year bloom for me.
