My present from the birds

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

Last year I planted a couple of grapes and had several clusters of grapes this year. We didn't eat them all and I just loved to watch the birds go in and out the trellis eating the grapes.

I found this plant growing around the bottom of the grapes yesterday and figure the birds exchanged a seed or two for grapes. Seems like a great exchange.

Does anyone know what this is?

Looks like plumbago. If so you probably wan to move it away from the grapes or it will smother them.

Kathy, looks like a Phlox to me. Someone else will know more about what type.

LOL Donna! One of us may be right. Just goes to show great minds do not think alike.

Looks like it might be a Plumbago, you might want to research them on the PDB at:
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/414/

And a Google Image Search for Plumbago articulata http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=Plumbago+auriculata&btnG=Google+Search

This image is my 'Imperial Blue'.

LOL also shows that great minds tend to congregate on Dave's all at the same time!

Too flipping hot to do anything else. Makes me glad I am an early riser so that I got all My RU planting done before 9 am. Well, that is when I ran out of potting soil anyway.

SoCal- looks like a phlox to me also, I could not see the stamens that the plumbago seem to have; and my phlox do not have any.

And the vote is 2 to 2! Any one else?

I'd say phlox, but then I don't know anything about plumbage. Is it on a stalk, or vine?

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

Well, I think the phlox has it. This plant seems kind of rambling, but I will check again when it gets light. Looking at the database I couldn't quite tell if the leaves were round or pointed? If round then I really think it is phlox. The flower is in a tight circle.

Hi Kathy

I looked up two types of Phlox for someone on the Perennial forum and the leaves are quite different. Even if they aren't round, they could still be Phlox. Here is the link http://davesgarden.com/t/402733/

Hope that helps your I.D.

I vote for phlox, my plumbago has larger blooms and slightly different shape. Donna

Looks like phlox to me but i'm in the group that isn,t familar with plumbago .

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've had plumbago for two years now and I think it's phlox.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I grow both phlox and plumbago and I am leaning towards plumbago. Does the base of the plant get woody? If it does, it is plumbago. You might want to post this on the Identification forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable people there who could probably nail this down for you.
