Upon my return from the Kentucky roundup, there was this amazing fragrance in the garden that travelled for yards. First I thought it was my new rose, Hot Cocoa, but no!! Perplexed for a couple of days, still baffled, then thought someone had been spraying with maybe a scented something or other. Walked past the Eleagnus on my way to the compost at the bottom of the garden and to my astonishment discovered that the gardenia/clove smell was coming from this shrub. Tiny little flowers, so powerful nearly knocked me over!!! I have never experienced anything like it!!!

Sweetest smelling shrub
Take some cuttings and share them with us!
I can do that and willingly!! The shrubs are about three year's old and it's the first time I've seen the flowers!! Send me your addy and I can get some cuttings off to you in the next couple of weeks.
Hey, Margaret... will you root one for me for next year? I'll be starting from scratch so something fast growing like this would be nice!
Gee, funny you mention this, a few of us were at a members house a couple weeks ago and smelled it, I too was amazed. She said most folks call it Ugly Agnes and curse it for its habit of spreading and the need to cut back.
Oh well, I got a small piece anyway, I'm a sucker for scent!
Me too Louisa???? Please? I am a real sucker for the fragrant plants. I am a true aroma therapy type person and my house and yard always have some kind of fragrace going on. I will send you my addy and you can let me know the postage.Okay? Thanks so much for sharing
Jan

pssssttt shoe...the ole hankster has plenty of shoes you can borrow. :-)
HAH!...vic, I'll share! (and pay rent on the shoes that way!) ;>)
How about a pair of High Heels to really throw her off the track?
Have anything in blue? Preferably open-toe? (With velcro cross-overs?)
Actually I was thinking something a wee bit less formal like lace up tennis shoe platform heels They do have open toes)
Reckon I better check the dress code at Louisa's house, or neighborhood. Besides, I don't wanna stand out from the others there, looking outta place or anything.
Only just found this - but found out about the scented elaeagnus a couple of years ago when I passed one in a local street.
My Limelight is delish this time of year http://plantsdatabase.com/go/53821/
Shoe, the blue shoes would match your blue toenails! LOL
HAH!...Vic, and here I thought no one noticed! (It's that nine yr old, ya know!)
To Louisa, Your post of October17, 2003 reminds me of the Russian Olive. There are several varieties and colors of flowers. I remember these from a park when I was a kid.
Dear me...look at all the hilarity I missed!! lol
Hi prcastle from OK. I was speaking of the Russian Olive family but always thought the flowers on all cultivars were white. Thanks for letting me know otherwise! :-)
louisa if you get seeds I'll be ready for a trade
