First frost

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

How fickle is the weather!!! Tomorrow promises to be warmer!! Just one frost and already some hydrangeas have taken a beating as has the crape myrtles. Funny thing though, a few hydrangeas sited in a different spot to the frost damaged ones have come through unscathed!! Both beds are situated facing East and only a few yards apart. Same with the crape myrtles, not all were harmed!!! Whereas, the less hardy Ceanothus is untouched as were some annuals.....still scratching my head over that one!!! :-)

Louisa, did you ever notice warm and cool spots when you take a walk? Sometimes they are just a few steps wide. That's what happened in your garden, a perfect illustration of microclimates. Be thankful that some plants survived to be enjoyed for a bit more of the season.

Yes Mary, microclimates in my garden for sure and I am thankful - very!!!

We had one great big micro-climate.......27 degrees worth! We lost about 1,000 mums to the BIG FREEZE. Ouch. What's that old saying..."don't count your mums, er, I mean chickens, before the eggs hatch". LOL
Live and Learn. Unfortunately, sometimes the very hard and painful way.

Ouch for sure!!!! But, with my plants, shrubs etc, I know they will all come back next year. I just don't want winter to come too soon since I have so much yet to do in the garden. Transplanting etc. I normally overwinter my pot geraniums but today I placed some of them in the sun room because they are not ready to go to bed with amples of flowers still and more buds on the way. My house sure looks cheerful all of a sudden!! :-)
