hi folks,
i planted this jupiters beard in the spring. i have it in a part shade area. getting full sun for 4 hours a day, the rest is full shade time.
the stems are all laying on the ground. is this normal for this plant? if not how do i remedy it. thanks.

Centranthus Ruber ?
i had it in white n pink-last yrs winter killed all but 2 little pieces of each! :(
I had said how much i luved it-not saying nothing out loud anymore!
Deb, that is what mine do and they get a bit more sun. I do not know how they would do with staking, the stems look like they would crack easy. I had tried it twice before and this is the first time it came back-sure hope that it makes it through to next year.
I have some in part-shade and they flop all over the place. They're three years old; I'm moving them to a full-sun location in early spring and if that doesn't do the trick (I'll know for sure next summer!) out they come. Life's too short to fuss with floppy plants....
You're having the same trouble as I had Terry.
I planted them in my MIL garden, where they got into the same state as yours ... 4 hrs/day sun.. they hung all over the place like drunken Paddys, put them last year in the full sun, lay all over the place like drunken Scotsmen ... compost!
btw, the guy who wrote this must be a geni(us)e, this was the first plant that I've seen which tried to flower underground, or at least try to get back into the ground to flower.

I *thought* they were supposed to stand up. I had to look at the link. If you guys have tried in shade, partial shade and sun, I don't know what to think! I have tried from seed several times, but I guess maybe they weren't fresh. I loved the pics of the plant. LOL
You might try planting them so they interweave among other plants that will support them. Just a thought.
well your responses have done this gardeners heart good. :) i am glad i am not the only one with this problem. :) i don't mind it laying around, but i was hoping this was a first year plant "thang". :) oh well we'll see if they survive my new england winter.
thanks folks.d

One more with a laid back plant, don't think it's worth the trouble.
I remember reading "...is a fine garden plant", ha!
Thank goodness we have real growers here with honest opinions!
It *would* be helpful if everyone posted their thoughts as a comment for the plant: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/136/ where it's much more likely to be read and be of benefit to fellow gardeners in the future :)
I don't know if this will help or not. This was the first year for mine to bloom. It started getting to tall and falling over I cut it back part way. Then it didn't fall over as bad. Mine is in full sun. But it did seem to keep getting wider and wider. I divided it 3 times this summer.
I planted mine in a trio and I have a Baby's Breath in the middle to maybe help support the beards. Also I think pinching back the top growth may help the plant bush out. I have to wait until Spring and Summer to find out if any of this works, and if it doesn't I'll be really ticked because I ordered them from Bluestone and HAD to get three of them. I hate nurseries that make you order in threes because if you don't like the plant then you're stuck with triple the dislike. Anyway, even if they don't work out I'll replace them with minature roses. They bloom all season long and they are lovely!
Hey Purpleice, I agree, I think what when we do orders, we could share with DG folks, the 3 orders.
Purpleice, if your Jupiter's beard and baby's breath combo works I bet it will be gorgeous! Please post photos.
