I have some of the shrubs that Jody lost. Can anyone tell me how to root forsthia and butterfly bush. I am in WI and we are in Fall, so if that helps would appriciate any help.
rooting shrubs
In WI the temperatures are probably cooling by now. Without a greenhouse I would take the cuttings and start them indoors under lights in the basement. If no such area is available, then next spring is best and easiest.
As far as starting the cuttings, fill up a plastic container (sides at least 3" high) with perlite. Fill to the top with water. Dip the ends of the cutting in a rooting hormone. Try and create a humid condition with plastic while not touching the cuttings. Keep the water near the top of the container. Mist the leaves several times a day. Place under lights (14 hours) or difused outside light. The cuttings will then have to be 'babied' for the entire winter. Something I have grown tired of doing for many years.
Walmart has plastic containers meant for storage that work well.
Thanks, I guess it will be next spring, as cold has hit this area (at least for this week!)
You could also layer them now. Pull a branch down to the ground and bend it into a u-shape. Anchor the bottom of the U in a shallow trench and cover it with soil ~ pieces of wire coathangers do well for anchoring or put a brick on top after you cover it with soil. If you wound the branch at the bottom of the U and dust with rooting hormone, it should help speed things up a bit. Keep it watered along with the mother plant and late next spring, you should have a new plant. You have a much better success rate with this method as the "cutting" is still attached to the mother plant.
Good luck!
