Any one hear of a hardy fuchsia? I see one here in the Van Bourgondien catalog. Fuchsia magellanica up to 6 feet tall and says it's hardy in zones 3-10. It sounds too good to be true... anyone have any experience with this plant?
Hardy Fuchia????
I thought fuchia's were very tender. Maybe you should offer to test it in your garden. Do you have the new catalog, or is this on line?
I found it on line - the link for the catalog is www.dutchbulbs.com - This is the link to the fuchsia

Apparently it's a shrub. I've never ordered from this company so I don't know how reliable their plants are. I'm always leery when the pictures are doctored up so much they look like fake plants. This one looks like it even has fake butterflies stuck to the flowers!!
You might like to check out this site to see what others have to say about this company:)

I have fuschia magellanica molinae growing in USDA Z6 located 65 miles east of Detroit , Michigan . It fries to the ground and resprouts in spring . Originally , I had 6 species planted but this is the only one that could survive 2 winters . There is no way it could survive in USDA Z4....USDA 5 may work in a sheltered location with mulch ???? Anyway this is my feedback regarding the hardy fuschias :)
Thanks Chooch! I'm glad to hear from someone that's grown it. I found it here at Forest Farms - http://www.forestfarm.com/search/plant1a.asp?use1=W&genus=Fuchsia
They say it's hardy to zone 7. Hmmm ... there's a big difference between z3 & z7.
You should find ratings of the fuschia plants @ the Perennial Gardens Web Site : http://www.perennialgardener.com/catalog/welcome.htm AND / OR http://www.shared-visions.com/tpg/plantfind-b.cfm
Try the hardiest species PoppySue and let me know how you make out . ROCK ON !! :)
Hi Sue...and all,
i HAVE ordered from them before.NO PROBLEMS...even thier discounted(special buys and $5.00/$10.00 "Blublady" buys are covered buy FULL GARRENTEE(I just know i spelled that WRONG!!)
Anyway I'm in zone 5/6...i AM ordering this...JUST MULCH IT.
I use old tomato cages, mix straw/moss/leaves for your mulch (DO NOT USE OAK LEAVES!!!)

MzMunchkin, I believe Olympia Wa is in zone 7. I used to live near there, it never gets down to 0. About 5 to 10 is the coldest, the temperature is moderated by salt water bays and sea level elevation. The cold temps are for 2 or 3 nights maybe one or two times a year.
I agree MaryE ; Olympia is not a zone 5 .

You are quite welcome ; we all make mistakes ...at least anyone that does anything at all :) Rock On !!
PoppySue,
I got one last year. I'm in zone 7. I'll let you know in the spring if it comes back. I loved it. I sure hope so.

This isn't going to help anyone in the lower zones because I'm in zone 8, Kalama, Washington (about 80 miles South of Olympia). But my grandmother has had one of these fushias growing in her yard for years. She's never mulched them or anything. Those other fushias have to be brought in doors during the winter here. It does get shrub size and it dies down completely in the winter but it sends up new growth in the spring. So these are hardy compared to the other types.
This is Great! I too was looking at and wondering about the Hardy Fushia in my Van Bourgondien catalog. I deffinately must get one, they sound great.
Has enyone grown fushia from seeds? I was wondering how difficult they are.

Sue
the northwest Fuschia society has a list of Hardy Fuschia for the Pacific North West
& the PNW is a very LARGE area which includes most of the zones
but the list does not say anything about which zones the Hardy's can tolerate
you might want to contact them for more info
the link is http://www.nwfuchsiasociety.com/hardies/hardyfuchsias.htm
