Re-planting up-rooted plants (Isabel)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Garden inspection this evening has many plants/shrubs up and out of the ground. Is there anything special we should do tomorrow as we put them back in the ground? Plants I'm referring to are: roses, clematis, crepe myrtle, sedum, hardy geranium, cotinus. Thanks.

I would check the soil ( don't know what kind you have) some things might be better just kept a bit moist and out of the soil if it is staying saturated- I am thinking of the sedum. The others might do well, just being popped back in-with some top pruning to deal with root damage. I do not know about the crepe myrtle or cotinus. These are just suggestions, others may have a lot more knowledge of the specifics-good luck.

I had my yard lansscaped a few years ago and A crape myrtle was cast aside and stayed out of the ground for several months before I got it back in the ground. I really didn't think it would make it but it is thriving. It did have a lot of dirt on the roots. If you need any thing that I can send you let me know. I'll start rootings or cuttings just say the word.

Dea, be sure to prune damaged roots... and like Marcia suggested, you might prune the tops to lessen the plant stress.

Like GRC said, many of us here will pitch in to help replace any plants you lose, especially with starting cuttings for you.

Thanks all ! Spent the day today in clean-up mode with the chain saw, rakes, etc. Lots of debris along our fence line with fallen trees. Our acres are barren except for the tree lines so many 1 year old perennials came up.

As I was re-planting today, it was sad to prune most down to bare tops and roots, but suspect that's what is best to help them gain stability as we have 30 days to go before a frost.

Funny - the roses that were not up-rooted all look so healthy today. Someone told me it is because of the increased ozone during the "weather". Never thought of that before - any thoughts?
