Hostas

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I am thinking about trying my hand at hostas. Are they slow growers? Most boods say medium growers...but the best bet is to ask my fellow gardeners!

Hostas grow fairly fast, depending on the species. Some of the large ones are fast growers that need divided frequently. I am wondering if they will do well in your part of the country?

In my experience they do best the second year after planting. The first year they seem a little slow and don't increase too much. I imagine it depends a lot on the cultivar too. Some seem to grow a lot quicker than others.

Like many perennials, it is the third year where they really come into their own. I do not think they are ideal plants for your area, unless you have some shade and can provide moisture. Maybe a posting on the Hosta Forum would give you some answers from someone with experience in your zone?

Hosta are only 'rated' to zone 8, but I've got a few here in zone 9 and they do well. And some of mine get afternoon sun!

They are tough, easy to grow plants. Just give them a well drained home and some protection from the sun and they do fine. The only thing they can't seem to tolerate is 'wet feet'.

They seem to grow quickly for me, maybe because the growing season is longer here. What zone is Sarasota?

Sarasota is zone 9. Many have hostas in the shade and they seem fine.

I certainly think it's worth a try, DaleP6. I don't think the heat is really a problem, so long as you give them shade and keep them well watered. It's not like they need the cold winter, like some plants.

Can hostas be grown successfully in pots?

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

yes, in fact most of mine are in pots, due to the drainage problems in the shady areas of my yard.

As with anything grown in a container, you have to pay more attention to watering, etc.

Hosta will grow in pots and some will do better than others. I had a Golden Tiara in a pot and it seemed to love it.
