Updates on friends

I also heard from Louisa earlier today, she is doing okay. They are having to "rough it". She said there was damage in her to her landscape, a hunk of siding from her home was blown off, but her DH was able to repair it. She said the roughing was the worst part.

Yoo-hoo!!!!! Never thought a shower would feel soooo good!! Thank you everyone for keeping tabs on me and others. We lost power for 24 hours, no water since we are on a well, no phone and no cell phone. Felt completely isolated!! Thought the roof was going to take off around 2 in the morning. The wind and rain were ferocious and the back garden became a river. Little sleep of course, but then thought - what the heck whatever will happen is going to happen and keeping awake won't change anything!! :-) How the pine trees near the house stayed up, just don't know but one came down in our woods. So....some of the bigger shrubs were uprooted but have since attended to most of them and most everything else, including the roses, were just torn to pieces but will recover. Lost some siding and hubbie had to chase them down (quite funny) but not!!

Tim and Erin are safe and have power now. Carol was doing OK as of yesterday morning when we lost phone connection but I believe she, like many others, is still without power. The downed trees in the area was extensive - we were so lucky. I'm very sad to say that nine people lost their lives in VA. I have much to be thankful for.

It's so good to see your post, Margaret, and thank God that you and yours are fine and that electricity has been restored. Thank you for updates on Tim, Erin and Carol. Glad you and your computer are reunited, too!

I'm here and me and DH are ok. We just got power back about 1/2 hour ago, and cable, still no phone lines. We've lost everything though.

We got flooded, the house, garage, car, geenhouse, pond, plants everything... sigh We had about 4 to 4 1/2 foot of water in the yard. Saved as much as we could by bringing stuff upstairs but it just came too quick. All our belongings are gone ... Will be a long task of clean up. We have to have a building inspector come and let us know if there is structural damage.

But... we are alive as are my birds and cats and for that I'm thankful. I even found a few fish in the back yard that hopefully will survive too.

Hope everyone that hasn't yet checked in checks in soon!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

jody, have you heard from Shirley?

Please let me know how DH and me can help you. We have shovels and tough backs.

(((((jody)))))

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Jody that is awful. We can help you rebuild your garden when you are ready. So glad you and family are safe.

Jody, God bless you and your family. I am so sorry about all that you lost, and simultaneously grateful that you're all okay. Hopefully, insurance and FEMA funds will help you to replace your possessions.

Shalimar, FL(Zone 8a)

Jody, I add my sympathy for your loss! We saw amazing pix of flooded B'more in today's paper. The Inner Harbor under water. We were hit by Opal in '95 and it took ages to put everything back together. I remember complaining to DH about the seemingly unsurmountable task before us and he said: "You know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" Jen

Cave Spring, GA(Zone 7a)

Jody, I'm so sorry for your losses. When I saw all the flooding on the news, I was afraid that it would affect some of our DG family. Keeping you and the others in my prayers, Linda

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Jody, if you still make it to the GA roundup, I'm sure we'll send you home with a whole new garden! (((jody)))

Jody, I am so very sorry about your losses of property but I am very happy that you and your family are ok. How is the boat? And did your DH stay with it for the whole storm? I wish we lived closer so we could help dig you out.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Jody we are so sorry about your loss. Only wish I lived closer so I could help you as you have helped others. God will provide a way so don't get depressed and let it consume you. I will be more than glad to send you anything that I have in my yard. A lot of it was once yours anyway. We'll have you in out hearts and on our mind.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm so terribly sorry that you lost so much Jody. Is there anything we can do now to help ease your situation?? Please let me know - I have spare new bedding etc.

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks everyone!

Yes, the boat amazingly made it. DH stayed on it until around 1 am loosening and tightening ropes as needed, he had to get off it then or he wouldn't have been able to since the water was getting so high. It was already knee deep on the docks at that time. He put the ropes as best he could. We had to take a canoe up the street the next afternoon to get to it to find that it was still there and still floating :)

Dea I have not yet heard from Shirley, but she may still be without power, there are a lot still with no power. Thanks for the offer. It was very overwelming to start... but we decided to start one room at a time. We took out a bunch of furniture and all kinds of other stuff that was wet soaked yesterday and will continue to do so today. The house stinks so bad! We are still waiting on an insurance agent, they are soooo busy with claims.

I've got some amazing pictures if I ever get the time to put them on the computer, but it may be a while.

Thanks again everyone for your support. We've been kicked down but we will get up again! It will just take some time to do so is all.

Love and Hugs
Jody

Hi.
Just posted to Jody on pics of Isabelle.
Mystic, I can't begin to tell you how good your call made me feel. Like I said, even though I don't get here much, your call made me feel like family.
So having been there and done that (with Fran) the most important things our friends will need is support. Save those plants for later. Right now, before the insurance kicks in......if it ever does.....the house needs to be cleaned, yard picked up, stuff carted away.
So maybe if each of us sent a buck or two to a representative (an organized person) they could contract with someone to get some stuff done. Trust me..FEMA sucks.
Just a thought..........

Jody,
So sorry about the storm. What a nightmare for you and DH. I hope something good comes out of it, somehow. You're in my thoughts and prayers!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Jody... Sorry to be so late in commiserating with you. Loss and devastation is always a shock, but I know your faith and friends will see you through it all. You have my prayers.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Same here Jody - it must be awful, but you'll pull through and you'll have an even more beautiful garden come spring with all the help from Dg. Glad everyone is safe. Some damage here, but nothing like what you are going through. One cottage at the bay is a mess full of sand, etc. and the other has the rock bulkhead in the front, but those are our home bases. Hang in there and call if you need something, we're not that far.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses, Jody. I know GOD will see you and your family thru this. But and your family and pets are safe and that is the important thing. For those who are safe and and had property damage but not as great a loss I'm so very glad.
I've talked to my daughter in Richmond, VA and she and her family are ok. They were without lights, water, and phone for a while, but ok. They bought some kind of converter that let them plug one end into the cigarette lighter and the other end into the TV, DVD player, and some other items and be entertained while still without water, etc..LOL
GOD bless and keep each and all of you.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Carol7 called this afternoon and we talked for a few hours! She said that, though they're still without power, their old touchtone phone still works (not cordless - aha!).

She headed over to a hotel in Williamsburg yesterday and enjoyed a long, hot shower. She also enjoyed a nice hot lunch cooked by someone else...At Red Lobster. ;) She and Adam stayed at the hotel that night, but she headed back home today when tornado warnings were issued.

Nothing hit, thank God. Oh, and the hotel's power was knocked out. Go figure!

As was mentioned earlier, they have many trees down, two of which hit the house. A third tree is uprooted and leaning out over their house, held up only by other trees!

Get this: The insurance company will cover the damages from and removal of the trees which hit the house, but they won't cover the tree that looms over the house. Unbelieveably, they'd rather pay a $10k claim when that thing falls on the roof and does some major damage. Her agent's checking to see if there's anything they'll do - agrees that it's ridiculous.

Their dogs are all fine, navigating around fallen trees in their yard and pen. Adam's been working long days made longer by the fact that the ferry house for the ferry he usually takes was washed into the river. His commute is more like 50-60 miles now and he leaves at 4am to start the day. I think she said his work days have been in the double digits as everyone's working to get power restored.

That's about it, I think. We talked a lot about our dogs. ;)

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

glad you came out unscathed (hugs)

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

We finally got our power back this evening. It's been a long eight days without electricity or water, but I've tried to keep positive thoughts and maintain a sense of humor. I was blessed and lucky that a tree didn't directly hit our home, one landed on the front porch and only nicked a corner of the roof because my old dogwood tree took the brunt of the fall. We had to use a chain saw so we could get out off of the porch. Two trees fell on my back porch at the beginning of the hurricane before my DH got home from work, but it only scared me to death - they didn't do any damage. I still have a tree hanging over my house and the only thing that is holding it up for the moment is three other trees. My insurance company will not take care of it because it is not touching an insured structure. It's really upsetting that they won't take any obvious preventative measures to avoid additional costs. All of the other trees that fell will be our responsibility too.

I guess I shouldn't complain too much. In the Tidewater Area our county is second when it comes to destroyed homes according to today's newspaper. We are a rural county with a population of approximately 7000, and 201 homes were completely destroyed. I may have had trees destroy several parts of my garden, but at least my home is still intact and we didn't have any flooding even though I am 1.5 miles from a boat ramp.

On a lighter note, since I didn't have any power or water I haven't had to cook, mop floors, do dishes or laundry, as well as clean the bathroom. Hmmmm.....do I really want the power back after all????? LOLOL ;o)

Thank you for all of your prayers, concern and friendship.

Carol

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Carol, I am so glad that your damage was not any worse than it was! The question now is will the insurance pay if the tree falls th rest of th way before or during it's removal? And, since when does property insurance only apply to what hits the house? When the storms blew trees down here several years ago they paid to remove all uprooted trees even in open fields! And they insisted on paying to have a line of pines that didn't fall but were weakened by the storm topped as a preventative measure since another storm was due to arrive within 48 hours.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Carol, So good to see your report. I've been thinking about you and Adam a lot, wondering how you guys were doing. Thanks for filling us in. God bless you guys.
