Small Space Veggie Growing

Lewisporte, NL(Zone 4a)

Would appreciate some guidance re Small Space Veggie Gardening. The size of my bed is roughly 20'X10'.
Sources of layouts etc., would be appreciated. I live in Zone 3 Canada, which is eq to 4 in the US, I beleive. I also live in a Micro-Clime, which gives me a better than average growing season, as well as good temps.
Thanks,,

Bobs... you might post this in the Vegetable Forum too, as you might get more responses from those who do a vegetable garden.

Haven't noticed you posting before... Welcome!

Hi Bob, nice to meet you. You may want to try looking up 'square foot gardening'. The basis is major dirt preparation before you begin. Then you learn which plants compliment each other, shade each other, can grow up one another, etc. The method allows you to get the maximum amount of plants in a small space. Good luck.

Howdy Bobs! And a big Welcome to DG!

YOu can grow quite a bit of veggies in a 10 X 20 bed. Try growing root crops (carrots, beets, radish, etc) along with above ground crops...that way they won't crowd each other out.

One of my favorites is the "multi-crop" row, or area. Broadcast seed of beets, carrot, lettuce, radish, kale, etc, what ever suits your fancy, in a given area, then lightly rake it in. The whole area will grow an abundance of food for you. You could also set in some onions sets! As things grow and get to eating size, pick 'em! As you pick the lettuce for example, this will open up the soil and give the beets room to expand! As you pull the beets or carrots, this will cultivate the soil and give the lettuce or kale or onions or what-not to expand. Great fun! YOu'll love it.

Hope to hear more from you and how your garden grows!

Hi, Bob :) I do a smaller veggie patch than you! Mine disconnected (sort of). Roughly, I have two beds that are each 15' x 3', and a third bed that is about 10' x 3'.

So I have learned a huge amount about how to grow things in tiny little areas. Of course the 'Shoe has given you some great info -- I have learned a lot from him. All the reference books seem to assume that we have our veggie gardens measured in the acre, not the inch!

I also have perennial fruits and veggies in separate areas, and that helps even more.

I hope to see you around the Vegetable Forum a lot! Kathy
