Wondering why GW link is here

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Olds...how did you edit the above posting at 3:24 PM when it is now only 11:37AM........WOW! Is this called "Back to the Future"? LOL

St. Petersburg, FL(Zone 10b)

Nopper I did not. I just edited a few minutes back...Let's blame Spike for this "glitch."

Follow up ...it looks like a scripting error... but I did not do it! Maybe Dave is have a funny moment! LOL!
Old!

If Dave did it, I give him credit for being a good sport.
He surely realizes that most of us grew up "having fun with computers" As a Network Operations person myself, I find myself on the other side of the fence.
But I ran a 4 node BBS back in the dark ages with 8 megs of ram-yes 8 megs ran Win 3.1 very well. Add 18, quad spin cd-roms then you have a nightmare but I loved it! My software of choice was VBBS then I went with Searchlight Software with RIP graphics. I miss it so!!!

The editpost script records time in GMT, 4 or 5 hours ahead of the DG server (depending on daylight savings time). I may fix that, one day.

How come my two edits on the post dated 12:02am didn't show a notation that I edited? That was strange.

Yes, I've made edit modifications recently, and for a while the notation was missing. That's fixed now (should be).

(The edits are still in UTC/GMT, though.)

(Okay, I think I fixed that, now. Should be in EDT now.)

Het Ray, I didn't understand at first as I had not been on Daves tday, but yes, I did get your email, now that I see! I didn't know where you were coming from, so I answered very carefully! Doris

DoW_Oldman,

I have no doubt that there are backdoors in every piece of software, and GardenWeb must be no exception. Those of us who are experienced in programming can easily find ways around most everything online.

The key is using (or not using) that power appropriately. I believe that the administrator of a server has a right to allow his system to be used correctly. Just because it is possible to subvert technology, does not make it right.

If I leave my window open at night, that does not give someone else the right to come into that window and enter my home. If you know how to pick locks, that does not make it right to go around and pick all the locks in your town.

I see internet servers as the same thing.

If Spike bans a person, I don't think it is right for that person to continually attempt to get around his banning in an effort to regain access.

Just my own 2 cents. Having worn and walked in the shoes of a website adminstrator, I am sensitive to the kinds of problems that us discussion forum webmasters have to solve. Whether we agree with what Spike does, it is in fact his own site and he has the right to do with it as he pleases. We do not have the right to abuse his property.

(Edited to fix freudian slip!!)

Please forgive me Dave.......I know it must have been a Freudian slip, but you ended the above reply with "and he has the right to do with it as we please." As we please, huh? Just LOL

Dave you said:

" Spike bans a person, I don't think it is right for that person to continually attempt to get around his banning in an effort to regain access.

I agree with you. That's is why I never went back. I admin 3 sites and I know fully well where you are coming from. Please don't misunderstand me. Hacking is about the only thing that gets my blood hotter than Spike does.

I listed those examples so those who are fustrated here will know that someday Spike is going to jump on the wrong person. I want those he as already trashed to know it is not hard for some payback to happen. I don't believe any true gardener (including myself) would ever attack, go around, or filter into GW.

Again, while I'm not the smartest--carpet cleaner around--and while I know folks who "can-do" if I was to ran up against something I can't handle--you have no worries! I would never do anything to bring this site down to Spike's level; let alone my person. My word on this.

Again I just wanted some folk here who are in the same bucket as I'm to understand and maybe smile a little as to the fact that Sir Spike is not as all powerfull as he like to pretend when he rants to the unknowing.

For whatever it is worth if I was going to do something it would have been well over a year ago. That is just not my style. My knowledge is like owning a gun. Just because you have it is not an excuse to use it.

I would hope that my past action(s) or lack of is a statement that I'm several levels above Spike...I would be hanged if I would bring myself down to his level...

Now just where did I leave my compost pile? Anyone know where I left it? :)

(muffled snort..."we"...hehehehehe, good catch SillyLilly)

Ahem. Yes, in all sincerity, well said, Dave ('cept for that one little slip at the end ;~) As frustrating as the situation is, it would be bad form to condone anyone's attempts to bypass or break another website's systems and processes. It's not only illegal, but it's unethical.

Not to mention it was the well-intended (but ill-advised) attempts by some enthusiastic DG'ers to tell their GW buddies about DG (wayyyyyy back in DG's infancy) that seems to have lodged a permanent burr under Spike's saddle.

MERCER, PA(Zone 5a)

Dave, Olds, Terry.........you are all class acts. It's nice to "know" you all.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey, I found out I can still post on GW, I guess because mine was only a harmless word not used in a context to "spam" him. Doris

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I am wondering how come he allows Kimberley to post her website when it shows clearly on there a link to Dave's Garden? Maybe he has never checked it out himself. Kudo's to you Kimberley for getting this past him so far!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I never even thought about that! I've only posted once, but my "home page" at Spikeland does link go my site.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Wouldn't it be funny if he were a member here under an alias!!! I have only been there a couple of times over the past 3 years and never was a member - no comparison!!!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Since we have so many members that do not post in the forums it is very possible that he is amongst us unawares....but I doubt he could maintain his silence with all that has been said about him here over the last few years.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Maybe that's why he freaks out at the mention of DG......?
