Wondering why GW link is here

I noticed a few days ago that at the bottom left of the page there are the words Garden Web. I clicked on it, it seems out of place and character on DG. Why is it there?

I was helping [wood-workers.com] improve their google rating. Thanks to my link I had, they are now on the second page of Google by searching for "GardenWeb".

I placed the link after I learned that Spike was -still- telling his members that I am a spammer. Ugh.

P.S. edited by Terry, because she read it (and thinks a lot of other people did, too) that Dave was magnanimously helping GardenWeb improve their Google rating. Not so :o)

Bummer! At least it wasn't Spike or someone else hacking your site, LOL. That would REALLY stink!

If I understand this right you did an end run around Spike.

I got banned from there because I posted a link to DG in a "private" e-mail. I got the same song and dance about DG spamming his site. I don't think Spike knows what spamming is. Looks like he's learning what bad press is though ;)

Oh, c'mon Dave - put it back up! Considering the smear campaign Spike's been leading for three years, it'd serve him right to find Google searches leading nearly as many viewers to THAT site as his.

Okay, I put it back up. It's there (no visible but there none-the-less!).

I should write up my own page and link to it instead. My page would outline a bit more carefully (and in a politer tone) the full case against GardenWeb.

Spike went on a tirade in mid-late August of this year, and threw out half the regulars on the Daylily forum. They all ended up over at Tinkers forums, and poor Tinker was so overwhelmed with the unexpected traffic that they almost shut him down!

There are a few newbies posting questions now on GW Daylily forum, but anyone who knew anything is gone.

I just can't understand how the man keeps that website going when he behaves like he does.

Well, I think it is really nice that you would help Spike even though he is telling untrue things about you. I sure hope I would be that nice. I'll have to work on that.

Every now then Garden Web sending me email me, I deleted it couple of times. I like DG are the best!

I started getting those emails a few months ago too Redrose. I thought it was kind of strange that he would send me emails telling me what's new on gardenweb, when he banned me a couple years ago for mentioning DG. Just for kicks, I went to see if I had been unbanned, but no, I still get sent to Disney.

How paranoid of him - it just makes me laugh.

I signed up for Gardenweb a couple years ago before I joined Dave's. I think I posted once or twice, but have only been back on the site to view a trade-list or two. I received a birthday email from them last January, but that's the extent of my interaction, so I really have no opinion. Dave's Garden has been such a good place to visit that I haven't felt the need to look around, and if I stick my foot in my mouth here, I can go over and add data to the PDB to atone!

There are some nice thing about GardenWeb and some not so nice.

First the good is the type of posting board GW uses. Sorry Dave, but the limitation set here are many. IMO too many. However, I respect your decision. This is your site. (Kind of like on my gaming site. The first one who post porn is not just block but a full spread on the last octet of his IP. From there if there is a problem we can do more....Remember we are online gamers, not a Sunday school class.)

I once had many friend on GW. However, I got ban. To this day I have not found out as to why. I was banned one day after my donation to that site was one day past one year...go figure. All I can say is that day GW should have been real proud I was still not a young punk with knowledge, but rather a level headed Oldman.

Next, I spent many, many, many, hours (Days) working on something that was requested of me by that site. It was a complete guide in the making of Growth containers. After I was ban that guide was removed.

What is good about this site is that Dave allows an upload of a picture directly into a posting. Without that kindness those who don't have a site to upload to could never post a picture here. I can tell ya the amount of uploading I've seen here is big storage and bandwidth. That all cost real monies.... Those who post here that have their own sites will let you know that nothing is free or cheap on the net. Dave's $15.00 to post here is chicken feed money when given what he offers.

Next look at the amount of traffic this site gets. Whoa! Yet! Yet! this site moves quickly...that is big broad band width! This site got to be moving on a private T1 or a shared T3! In my area a T1 starts at 1600.00 per month. That is starts! Not totally billing.

Next, the folks here are as great as those on GW! And let's face it. It is the people who make this place work. Dave for a few pennies has supplied the tools.

Now the only down for me here (I can live with the limitations of this board) is that the organic section is not very active.

Otherwise GW has nothing on this place. And in many way it is less.

I normally don't jump or bad mouth anything or anyone. So I will end my rant with this. Don't bring up GW and I'm a push over. Let a GW member tell me how much better it is than here and I will eat that person's lunch.

I just sent a private email to someone on that site and mentioned Daves garden. I clicked "send" and the message about spamming came up! A private email???

Nothing's private if you're sending through their server. Nothing in e-mail is really private anyway, but people usually keep their noses out. :S

Did you try to post to any of their threads after you did this? That's how you find out you are no longer welcome. You try to post and get sent to Disney. That's what happened to me anyway.

If you don't intend to post or email anyone through there, then you probably won't even notice if you are banned or not. Unless they started sending emails notifying you of it, but I kinda doubt it.

Edited to say that I just tried to post over there and am still getting sent to disney, two years after the fact.

The biggest difference between the two sites is threads such as this...we are free to discuss the Garden web, link to it and like or not like it without fear of being banned here. I joined Garden Web way back and actually have posted there about 5 times in several years. There are a lot of good people there with knowledge and humor....but most of them will end up here eventually :~) And their loss is always our gain!

Yep I got a nasty letter from Spike last year for mentioning DG in a private e-mail. Then I made a post about private e-mails being read by him and got another nasty letter. I haven't been back. How he enjoyed my member fees because he won't get another from me.

I was never banned, but then, I've only been back once since I asked him to remove my name from his membership. I never received confirmation, so I had to check to make sure it had been done. I've also never received any of the infamous emails. Life is just too short to deal with all the petty games. I am very happy where I am.

Disney does get a lot of hits; they probably wonder how they can get so many.:) It is an honor to receive the Disney boot. The requirements are few. I mentioned my web site to another once. The timing was right. Reruns of Mickey were just beginning.:)

I have to say my favorite feature is the "Watch Threads" and "skip to new". Just a great timesaver!

The most frustrating thing for me is that there are people who honestly believe DG is a "baaaaaad" site that SPAMS GardenWeb members. I wish there were a way to let them know that our only misdeed is being a competitor of GW.

If Spike doesn't want people to use his boards to advertise competitors, I can understand that position. But he should be honest with his members about it and not cloak his paranoia in false accusations.

Not to mention he's a little inconsistent about who's a competitor and who isn't: Southern Living is a competitor of GW, but is frequently mentioned on GW forums. Could it be that Spike likes having Steve Bender as a member, and doesn't want to alienate him? Hmmm. I've seen Southern Living articles written by Bender that are almost verbatim quotes from GW forums, and yet the members who posted their thoughts aren't given any credit, nor is GW. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

HGTV, and Helpmefind.com are other "competitors" of GW, and I'm guessing there's a "good-ole-boy" reason why they're also allowed to be mentioned without any reprisal or aspersions cast on their character.

Ahhh, that's enough grousing for one morning. On to cup o'coffee #2 and more constructive activities :)

Gardenwife, I kind of picked up you are more than the average net person. Spike's statement about being banned forever is a joke. I just about bet you can spoof an addy as good as the next person. For those that don't know there is no such thing as truely bocking or banning anyone. If I had wanted to return to the GW I could have proxied Spike everyday on the hour every hour until I died. There is no way he could have stop me from posting and leave his board open. Oh he could remove the posting. The can filter the postings. He can block a given IP. Even do a spread on it.

Believe me if I wanted to promote this site via his boards he could not stop me. He would alway be one day behind me. He would never know who was the true author.

For example: djm906 of this community as I write this has just recieved an E-mail from a Bill White. This E-mail was sent via GardenWeb! In that E-mail it is going to say that I saw his posting about spam. Would he write back and explain what spam is. When I sent this I requested that a copy of it go to my yahoo E-mail box. Sure enough it did and when it did I gave me djm906 addy. Now let's say djm906 writes back to me. Explains everything. At this point Spike does not know a member of DG is in contact with a GW member. In my return E-mail I could say hey thanks a lot. BTW have you been to the DG site? Great folks there too! At this point it is easy to intro GW members to DG. Just read any GW posting and E-mail that person about his or hers post. Should Spike figure it out...you just use another name with a new junk E-mail addy.

This not being able to talk with good gardening folks on the GW board is childish.

Spike someday he going to tick off or rant on the wrong person. I'm not talking about the example above. I'm talking postings that he will always be a day behind. And when he grap the IP of that person then the spoofing begins. Next when he traces that spoofed IP back and hits that great wall of China he is going to wish he had not beat up on someone. Should he continue on this wrong person I can tell ya scripting errors are a pain to fix. I'm not that person. Frankly Spike is just not worth the effort, and I really pitty his small minded ways.

Well I guess I have said enough--if not too much. Please don't ask me how to spoof via a proxie, or what I mean by scripting errors. I will not tell or explain this. I brought this up only as an education to express how pittful Spike is in what he think is protected layering.
