moving clematis

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

Any tips on moving clematis? It is a summer bloomer and if my family members do not want it, it will come up here-IF I can get it out. Anyone know what the root system is like? It has been in for a couple of years. The reason I ask, is that I was going to trade a sweetpea vine and was down 18" and still no end in sight. So could use any tips.

I do know that the roots can be brittle on clematis, and should be handled gently. I don't see whay you could not cut them off though at 18". Do you know the variety? What were you looking for in trade?

Great-another brittle root-why can't they be like my weeds!!The plant is from Wayside=Guernsey Queen ( or cream) but think it is Queen. I have to check with family, but will put it up if they do not want it. I have to take a good look at what I would like in trade. We are in our second dry season and trying to keep the flowers and ferns going is sending my water bill sky high;my bog plants are not happy campers.

((( Marcia ))) I know how heart-breaking it is trying to keep thirsty plants irrigated. Don't give up hope! Even if they have gone dormant, they should recover next spring.

When you dig up the clematis, prune the top of the plant too. You can cut it to about 12" high, and it should help make it recover more easily.

I moved one last year. They have a big root system... lots of roots. I dug all the way around the plant and lifted it out... broke lots of roots doing it too. They're sorta fleshy like daylily roots. I seperated it into three plants... broke more roots doint that. The one I planted... the biggest piece is doing fine this year. Moving sets them back a lot but I still got blooms this summer.

I think this is a good time to move it. It should have plenty of time before the ground freezes to settle in.
