mining for a garden

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Here in Tombstone, AZ you have to be a miner to be a gardener. It takes me almost 2 hrs to dig a hole for a rose bush. I hired a fellow to dig me a hole for the apple tree that I planted this summer. I have to say that my garden is a real labor of love. I can actually remember each and every hole that I have dug. From planting seeds or digging up roots of bamboo to transplant. Now that is really a chore.
But with all the labor involved I love it that much more.
So... I'm not olny a gardener but a miner as well. I made a small wall around the roses out of the rocks from one hole.
Just thought I would mention this and let those with real dirt under their fingers to enjoy every bit of it. I have to buy dirt.

Jan, there's a book you need to read. It's called Weedless Gardening by Lee Reich. He says that we should build soil from the top down like nature does. It's a fun read and has a lot of good stuff in it for people who have nasty hard dirt.

Great! Thanks Kathleen. I will certainly check into that. I could use all the help I can get. Now If I could just find someone to dig all my holes I'd be doing great!
