As fall approaches, some of you "old-timers" may have noticed that we didn't do a 3rd annual PDB Challenge this year. No doubt, many of you are silently grateful that I didn't spend the month of August exhorting, encouraging, ...(did someone say "nagging"????) everyone to join in a challenge to add new entries, comments, or images.
But even without a formal contest, late summer is a great time to reflect back on the plants (flowers, veggies, trees, shrubs) that you really enjoyed this year, and which ones you grew to loathe.
Thanks to past challenges, the PDB is pretty big these days, which means the odds are in your favor of finding "your" plants already listed. Here are activities that nearly everyone can do:
1) add a comment to those plants you do - or don't - particularly care for. A quick note in your own words can help an undecided gardener take the plunge or think twice about planting a particular flower, vegetable variety, grass type, or tree/shrub; and
2) for our U.S.-based members, add your ZIP code to the plants that grow well in your garden or vicinity. This doesn't mean you necessarily LIKE the plant, it just means it grows well in your garden. Or your neighbor's garden, or even in that hard-baked strip of dirt in the parking lot at the mall.
For the shutterbugs among us, images are ALWAYS welcome. The annual fall foliage explosion is about to begin for many of us, so those with a camera may want to capture those leaves at their most glorious color, especially if you live near a park or arboretum with positively identified species. Images of bark, fruit, seeds, and nuts are also most helpful additions to the PDB.
Let's all mosey on over to the PDB, and do a bit of browsing and searching. Let the editors know if you can't find something in particular - we can find it or add it for you easily. What we CAN'T do is add the unique, individual touch that comes when everyone shares a bit of themselves.
Time to summarize our summer...
All right, all right! I quit being lazy and went on over. Thanks for the gentle nudge, Terry :D
The Plants Database is why I first came to Dave's. It was a great help in my research as I added new colors to my flowerbeds. I hope to add more photos as I get a chance...
