Check out the plant database for pampas grass???
You haven't given any discription. Kinda hard to tell without that.

Could it be 'Indian Grass' -- Sorghastrum nutans? http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/volunteer/sepoct01/profile.html It is native to the prairies of North America.
lupinelover, it must be that grass. The others we are familiar with only go to zone 5 usually.
A few places have native grasses for sale, but not many. I am fortunate that the University here has a post-graduate program that specializes in growing and selling many native plants, including prairie grasses.
Other groups that I participate with also raise from donated seed many of the endangered plant species to help re-establish wildlife refuges.
Hey kathy,
.....Ya gotta get more into the DG gardening style ;~P
..........Carry a small spade, pocketknife, baggies or whatever in your vehicle, comes in handy for digging roots/rhizomes,taking cuttings and collecting seeds...lol
Have fun my friend,
