ginger plants

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I have several ginger plants that my mailman gave me. They look pretty scraggly but sent out the most wonderful white flowers...not many at a time unfortuantely...but they smell heavenly! What kind of ginger is this? These are planted in sand basically as that is what we have here in Florida. I cut them back periodically and they have multiplied. I would like to get some more of these and treat them properly. These are in part shade. Do all varieties have such a lovely aroma? I know nothing at all about this family of plants! So your help is most appreciated! Can they be grown successfully in pots?
Thanks!

Dale, lots of gingers are fragrant, especially the hedychiums. Sounds like yours is White Butterfly ginger, hedychium coronaria.
I grow lots of my gingers in pots.
Lisa and Barb are our ginger experts. Have you posted in the tropical forum? They will see it there.

I'm in NW FL and those gingers are called "ginger lily" here and you can get them easily - even in Lowe's and H.D. They send out lots of runners kind of like iris. Here they grow well in part or deep shade in sandy soil and die back to the ground in winter. When you cut the stems back they smell like culinary ginger root and the roots look like it, too. But I havn't eaten them! Hope this helps!
