Disgusting -- a teeming mass of these things. From a distance, they look kind of like Uncle Ben's converted rice! These are on a verbascum plant:
Whiteflies?
I don't think that's whiteflies. They look like this http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/dec01/k9678-2i.jpg and are usually on the underside of the leaves.
Are those mealy bugs?
Brenda
Oh, you're right, Cala! I'm not sure, plantnutz. If they're still there, I'll get closer. I was zoomed in from about 8' so I wasn't close enough to scrutinize. Just gave me the creeps, though -- my mom's the one who first noticed and said "ewwww, you've got to come outside and see this". ;P
GW, I know what you mean. Yuck!!! I was digging up some green liriope last weekend and dug up what I think are slug eggs - (the timed release fertilizer resembles them from what I have been told) but there had been no timed release there so I put the shovel of dirt and eggs into a pot to see if they hatch. Yuck, yuck, double yuck!! Brenda
This makes me glad I live in a hostile environment for many of our garden foes! I've never seen mealy bugs before, but I can say these don't look like white flies. I saw my first infestation last year in a friend's greenhouse, and they looked like bright white confetti on and under the leaves, flying about, as well. I have to agree with you...yuck!
Looks like mealybugs to me. Too fuzzy to be scale.
GW, look at this bug. It's a wooly alder aphid. http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/diaglab/lndscpin_files/frame.htm
You know, we had some huge aphids on our little native willow tree in my yard. It was pretty disgusting. They were about the size or a small coffee bean...yuck. They didn't seem to hurt the tree.
Cala, but it wouldn't be that if the host plants are maples and alders, would it? This was on that verbascum plant (this one http://davesgarden.com/t/305695/ ). Unfortunately, I forgot to get back out there and get better pictures. Sure wish I had!
Well I don't know, lol. Guess I should read what the host plants are from now on! There sure were a lot of them, whatever they were.
