I must say and I'm sure I already have ....these are some of the pretties MG's ever........now what about seeds, are yall getting seeds? Has anyone tried cuttings or airlayering on any of these.... Also someone said they were prone to folding and tearing. Also wilt from the heat, any updates on that?....I hate to be 10,000 questions but I am very intrested in these and want as much info as I can get and you girls are the best source.... :o)

They are just to pretty...the photos do answer some of my questions..I hate to see that they do seem to tear and fold..TwinLakes is it windy where these are?... :o)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Why do we like them? Look at the Size.
Yes, they may be subject to damage from wind and rain;
and some just have difficulty opening without splitting because of their size. But when one does . . . well . . . breathtaking!

Willow,
Yes it is a very unprotected area plus I didn't get trellises up so they tangle more. Will do better next year; because they are so big they cannot close up like small ones do so you can enjoy most of them all day.

If the weather holds, hopefully I will have seeds to share; just have to wait and see.

There will be another coop next year with Sbarr and Loph so you can at least look forward to that.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I sure hope so...I learning all I can about these so when I get some they will do real well for me......thanks for all the info.......looking forward to trading...... :o)

Arlene the Takii Seiryu is absolutely gorgeous. Please let me know if you get any seeds!! I have several left over from the co-op I can share!!

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

Great pictures Arlene -- those are some that didn't do well for me, so nice to see how they turned out in your garden.

I have some new ones to post soon as well . . . we have been having lots of rain, just gotta get a dry moment to take a couple pictures.

Takii Seiryu has been blooming for me and another one that is white with a blue border (? can't figure this ones name out)is also blooming away.

Takii Heian Izumi seems to flop in the heat, however Akatsuki Umi "Sea" which I have in full sun doesn't seem to be affected by hot days. The rest all have afternoon shade.

I love all of the variations that we're getting - I'm finally starting to recognize some names!

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

Here's one of mine...don't have the name handy, but I'm really likin' it!

Sandy - From checking your order list and comparing against mine, I believe that is Heian Izumi. It's definitely one of my favorites. I have trouble getting flowers without tears. Yours are very nice!! This is one I am definitely saving seeds for next year! It will be interesting - I don't know if next year's seeds will be true to the parent, should be fun to find out.

Here is the picture of the white one with blue border -- I know it is a Japanese MG, I lost my marker for this one but leaning toward it being Akatsuki no Tiuyu maybe a variation?

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Alyssum, If you will email me your address I have the solid purple seed ready for you. I will put the name on the seed pack. Right now I don`t remember it and will have to look it up.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Akatsuki no Tiuyu

I agree, Alyssum

Lophophora - thanks!!! Fujimusame is the one I was trying to get a name for. Large lavender with a white border - it's wonderful.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Loph,
In your third link you name the blue/white striped one as Matsukaze (which I received seeds from Sbarr in the Fall Hunt~ they were in a brown coin envelope and had a typed label with description purple, white stripes)

I also received an original packet with that same color picture and wrote down all that was in English:
Brand: Takii
Variety: Pharbitis nil Choisy (FAA670)
Description: Seiryu

My notes:
(latin name. More recently Japanese morning glories are know as Ipomoea nil. Choisy was the botanist who named it.)
Description: Seiryu (sei maybe "blue"?and ryu is dragon)

What do you make of this? Which is correct? Or are they two different ones that look so much alike?

I'm not sure which one this is, but it did quite well given that it got full sun :)

I wouldn't have this without the generosity of several giving DG members!

Arlene - I noticed the same thing. I had both of the original packets, put them side by side, and the pictures were identical. It is a pretty one - have it out in my yard now, have gotten maybe four blooms this year.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Sbarr,
You're ahead of me! I only got one bloom but it was breathtaking. We'll definitely want to order that one
and Twilight Dance next year.

Right now I am worried that the cold weather will come before I can collect any seed. :(

Maybe I'll have to take some blankets out there as well as one for myself and cuddle up to them at night.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

I know - I keep desperately looking for dry seedpods. The only on that I'm confident about is the bright pink one with the white dot in the center - those seem close.

BUT, and this is entirely a whim, I have some MG's in pots that I trimmed back and they're starting to grow back on very short and sturdy stems. One is even hinting that it might flower.

Given that, I'm inclined to try to dig some of my favorites up and see if I can keep them over the winter. Fortunately, the striped purple one is in a pot so I can bring that in fairly easily.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

More photos please, this is wonderful to look at.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

we can only hope

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, since yall are having problems getting seeds because of a short growing season.. you should send some of what you may collect down south......my growing season is from March to December, hint, hint...LOL....

I love looking at the pictures of these beautiful MG's and you girls have really outdone yourselves sharing all the photo's with us. I hope the weather will give you the time to collect your seeds and we will have more next year.....
.... :o)

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I am just wondering where all of you get your special Japanese morning glory seeds. I can't seem to find any of the really unusual one's. If anyone can tell me where to order them I sure would appreciate it.

Patricia

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Patricia - I got the first batch in Japan when I was there on a business trip and met up with our gardening friend Lophophora and distributed what I rec'd to several people. Then, this winter, we had a Japanese Morning Glory co-op and 25 folks were able to get different packets of seeds imported.

Stay tuned for the upcoming seed co-op in January or February and you'll have an opportunity to get some.

For details on how this all happened, please check the co-op forum.

Well I will for sure mark the MG co-op on my calendar to watch for. I think they have to be one of my very favorite flowers. I am just in awe of all the different variety's. I did grow quite a few variety's last year, but the unordinary one's didn't set seed for me. I am wondering if they would grow and bloom under lights in a heated greenhouse during the winter.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

jerodsmom - good question, I asked the same in another thread. I'm trying to retain certain varieties because they didn't seed well and I'd like to grow them next year. poppysue just mentioned another correspondent from another forum who does grow them in his greenhouse. I did post to his forum with a question about wintering them. I'll let you know if I get an answer.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You all had some beautiful morning glories. I am in awe. Can't wait to get in on the next co-op. Can never have too many glories. Your pictures were just great.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Brugie, I have some seed that I collected and will be glad to share a few with you.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Mary, I had not got back to this thread until now. I'm hoping to get in on the next co-op and if not, I may have to start doing some begging. Actually, I have a lot of glory seeds, just not some of these beauties.

Made it into the co-op and all I can say is WOW! Thanks so much for posting all of these wonderful pics and putting in notes on how they grew for you, Sure hope I'll be posting some of my own this summer.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

My bigest mistake was planting them in too fertile of soil and giving them too much water.
Will have better cultural plans for 2004.

Also did not get much seed but Gardens Alive offers something you spray on the flowers to attract the bees.

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

Did anyone grow the heian kagayaki last year? If so, did the blooms have RED stripes as in the picture Sandra posted to have us make our choices from, or did they have pink stripes as in the Pink Tye Dye found here in the U.S.? Have to remove one of my choices for this years co-op and am just wondering if kagayaki might be the same as Pink Tye Dye, which I already have seeds of.

Thanks!

Sandy
