Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

This plant was supposed to be a double/triple white datura, and it came up variegated. It's really beautiful! Cathy

I just posted about this on another site. I LOVE the variegation on this one. I'm so HOPING it will set seeds and come true. Then I'm hoping you'll trade with me, LOL.... Can you post a picture of the whole plant? I'm a variegated foliage nut. Thanks Cathy.

I don't have a name for this datura, I was told it was a D. Metel. I received seeds in a trade for a double/triple white datura and was expecting a green plant. When this one started out with white and green leaves, I thought it was sick at first, but the second set of leaves came out yellow and green. I will take a picture of the whole plant and post it this afternoon. It's really beautiufl! Cathy

Oh that is awesome! I have been growing Dats for 8 years and have yet to see that. So, are you gonna save seeds?? I have never tried to root datura, guess it would be sort of like rooting a brug??

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

AGGHHH! I need this plant, LOL...... I LOVE the foliage on this. What great luck to have this come from a seed! I'm excited for you.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You might want to take cuttings and root them for next year. I don't think it will come back variegated from seed, but could be wrong. That foliage is very pretty. Much better than the variegated Missouri Marble I had last year.

Oh My!!!!!!! I want,I want,I want, That is just awsome I've never seen one before... If you get true seeds or cuttings let me know. I'm sure I can find something to trade with you......:o)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I didn't even know they came like that. Just lovely! So is this a new one of a kind?

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

That's what I was wondering, is there another plant like this one. I have done several web searches and I can't find anything that looks like this plant. I am planning on doing some air layering as soon as some of the side shoots get lager. Cathy

That is just super gorgeous. No, there is no other plant like the one you have. You are the proud owner of a very unique plant, one of a kind. I am a variegated plant lover too. That is soo beautiful. Better take all the cuttings you can to winter them over.

Me quickly looking up Freedom, PA on mapquest, surely it's not that far from my house, LOL.....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I sent the pictures to a datura expert I know. I can't wait to see what he says!

With this varigated type do they produce true from seeds, or is a cutting the only way to assure you have a varigated plant??

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

oh, that's a super treasure! take good care of it so you can get lots of cuttings!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have never had luck rooting a Dat:0(
This one sure looks worth trying airlayering on!
I agree with all of the above exclamtions about this one!!!It is Bizarre,I hope you can keep it going!!

Cbrandenburg---lol you know of course that we are going to have to stalk your garden now I mean check on your airlayering for you--lol that is stunning, and it blooms to boot!! congrats. cheryl

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think I'd locate a company that might want this one to tissue culture and get it out to the public. Who knows, you might be able to make some bucks from it.

I know of two variegated datura species that both come from seed. Yours is new. The others are D. stramonium and D. inoxia. Not all seedlings are variegated, and I have a worry that maybe there is a virus, but I don't know. I think virus doesn't go to seeds though.
I have never been able to root a datura cutting, but I know a woman who does it every year to keep her D. meteloides alive, it is many years going. Maybe just get as many seeds from it as you can, and we will all cross our fingers at least one comes true. I think you should try everything you can to keep this going.
One thing I learned with my own Brug variegated sport- Don't kill it with kindness!!!! LOL.

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

heyyyyyyyyyyy good idea Brugie????---there was a woman, I read about who grew a real white marigold * not off white*--I think Burpee paid her like ten thousand dollars? a friend of mine grew yellow cone flower next to some plain jane weedy blackeyed susans and came up with some huge yellow cone flowers with burgandy faces---not sure that they will come true from seed but Im gonna give it a try.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I agree with Shirley, this is a special one, might be worth the effort to hunt down $omeone!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I emailed Tonny the pics and he said
"Thanks for forwarding the pictures *lol* I would say that it is one of a kind *lol* Gosh! Those leaves are beautiful. Its a variety (selection) of Datura metel."

Maybe I should ask him how to propagate it.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Tell him I said "Hey" next time you talk to him,he has some good knowledge on Dats.

FSH, TX

Now that is a rarity. Very lovely indeed. I'd save some seed and or cross pollinate to a double purple variety myself. Thinking of a double purple varigated datura sounds so beautiful.

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

Cbrandenburg I always wanted a rich best friend with a varigated brug just like yours--what a coincident? lol

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

that's just absolutely beautiful!!! Can I be on the "I want, I want" list too?..........LOL

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

I'm so negative, LOL. I once had a nicotiana from seed that was variegated. I took the plant to my college. The teachers said it was a wonderful plant, but no nursery would be willing to propagate nicotiana from cuttings for the consumers. I think there is a keen group of brug/dat growers, but it might be nearly impossible to make any money from it. Most (99.9%?) would walk past it in a store and not understand its rarity. But still, get seeds and try cuttings, etc, because if it remains good you can name it that way. I just thought, if it does come reliably from seed, maybe a seed company would buy it. You should know more next spring. I know that is negative but I was sure I'd be rich from my nicotiana. Then it was my all pink hoya (no chlorophyl, of course it died, I thought I'd be selling pink plants for ugly pink houses). LOL.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

This is the response I got....boy Cathy. At first I thought how lucky you are to have this but now I think what a responsibility it is! I wish you luck!

Kelley, I have only rooted Datura meteloides succesfully from root suckers (suckers taken from the enlarged stem basis). However, the tissue type of the young shoots in the leaf angels found on the main stem on Datura metel resembles the kind of tissue found on small Brugmansia seedlings and those seedlings will root very fast. There is a possibillity that young lateral shoots of this Datura might do the same and root. It will be a wonderfull thing if this works out as its the most beautiful variegation ever seen on a Datura (JMHO *lol*). There are a chance that it will also come true from seeds, but the ratio might be as low as 1:100 or less. As I have no experience with this specimen its hadt to say anything concrete. I have a Datura stramonium, that give up to 80-90 normal green seedlings, several yellow leaf seedlings and one to a few with variegation, so that it what I base my estimation on. On the other hand I have also a specimen of Datura inoxia (DATU-64 originationg from a seed sample from Impecta seeds???) where the ratio of variegated seedlings is 100:100, that is 100 % : D

Hi Kell, thanks for letting me know what he had to say, I printed it out for my husband. I consider this plant a gift from God, it has really made my summer! I will do my very best to keep it going this winter, trying to root some cuttings, and growing the seeds to see what happens. I am new to brugs and daturas this is my second summer to have daturas bloom, last year I had a double yellow and fell in love with it. Then this plant started to grow WOW, I thought it was a common plant at first because it grew from seed, but with all my searching couldn't find anything about it or anything that looked like it anywhere. Then Bill told me about this site and to check it out, I'm so glad I did, great information and wonderful people. Who knows what may come of this plant, but I am very happy to have grown it this summer. Thanks for all your help!! Cathy

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

I hope something wonderful comes from it! Maybe you'll get lots of good seeds. How fun for you! I can picture all the little seedlings growing in neat little rows next spring...lol

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Here are a few close up pictures of the leaf, we counted 5 different colors, 4 different shades of green and 1 shade of cream. Cathy
