Variegated Datura

This plant was supposed to be a double/triple white datura, and it came up variegated. It's really beautiful! Cathy

I just posted about this on another site. I LOVE the variegation on this one. I'm so HOPING it will set seeds and come true. Then I'm hoping you'll trade with me, LOL.... Can you post a picture of the whole plant? I'm a variegated foliage nut. Thanks Cathy.

I don't have a name for this datura, I was told it was a D. Metel. I received seeds in a trade for a double/triple white datura and was expecting a green plant. When this one started out with white and green leaves, I thought it was sick at first, but the second set of leaves came out yellow and green. I will take a picture of the whole plant and post it this afternoon. It's really beautiufl! Cathy

Oh that is awesome! I have been growing Dats for 8 years and have yet to see that. So, are you gonna save seeds?? I have never tried to root datura, guess it would be sort of like rooting a brug??

You might want to take cuttings and root them for next year. I don't think it will come back variegated from seed, but could be wrong. That foliage is very pretty. Much better than the variegated Missouri Marble I had last year.

That's what I was wondering, is there another plant like this one. I have done several web searches and I can't find anything that looks like this plant. I am planning on doing some air layering as soon as some of the side shoots get lager. Cathy

That is just super gorgeous. No, there is no other plant like the one you have. You are the proud owner of a very unique plant, one of a kind. I am a variegated plant lover too. That is soo beautiful. Better take all the cuttings you can to winter them over.

I sent the pictures to a datura expert I know. I can't wait to see what he says!

With this varigated type do they produce true from seeds, or is a cutting the only way to assure you have a varigated plant??

I think I'd locate a company that might want this one to tissue culture and get it out to the public. Who knows, you might be able to make some bucks from it.

I know of two variegated datura species that both come from seed. Yours is new. The others are D. stramonium and D. inoxia. Not all seedlings are variegated, and I have a worry that maybe there is a virus, but I don't know. I think virus doesn't go to seeds though.
I have never been able to root a datura cutting, but I know a woman who does it every year to keep her D. meteloides alive, it is many years going. Maybe just get as many seeds from it as you can, and we will all cross our fingers at least one comes true. I think you should try everything you can to keep this going.
One thing I learned with my own Brug variegated sport- Don't kill it with kindness!!!! LOL.

heyyyyyyyyyyy good idea Brugie????---there was a woman, I read about who grew a real white marigold * not off white*--I think Burpee paid her like ten thousand dollars? a friend of mine grew yellow cone flower next to some plain jane weedy blackeyed susans and came up with some huge yellow cone flowers with burgandy faces---not sure that they will come true from seed but Im gonna give it a try.

Now that is a rarity. Very lovely indeed. I'd save some seed and or cross pollinate to a double purple variety myself. Thinking of a double purple varigated datura sounds so beautiful.

I'm so negative, LOL. I once had a nicotiana from seed that was variegated. I took the plant to my college. The teachers said it was a wonderful plant, but no nursery would be willing to propagate nicotiana from cuttings for the consumers. I think there is a keen group of brug/dat growers, but it might be nearly impossible to make any money from it. Most (99.9%?) would walk past it in a store and not understand its rarity. But still, get seeds and try cuttings, etc, because if it remains good you can name it that way. I just thought, if it does come reliably from seed, maybe a seed company would buy it. You should know more next spring. I know that is negative but I was sure I'd be rich from my nicotiana. Then it was my all pink hoya (no chlorophyl, of course it died, I thought I'd be selling pink plants for ugly pink houses). LOL.
