Its a puzzlement

I wonder if we are the only ones who get all these vines growing and merging everywhere and can't even remember what was planted where. I think we identified a kabocha (new one for us), and several we are almost sure are rampicante trombocino, if it is not really a gourd. Seed trading is great but it gets confusing, specially as we are not sure which made it and which died, or have been completely overrun.

Esther, I've got stuff popping up that I planted two years ago that never budged last year. Of course I can't remember what anything is..........lol

kabocha is a Japanese squash. it does not grow as a vine on a trellis but on the ground. i used to grow a lot of them the past few years. the squash is nice, sweet and nutty, and very delicious.

I did not mean to give the impression that these vines are growing nicely on trellises. They are just rioting all over each other on the ground. To try to discover what we have, we have to step gingerly into the mess (trying not to squash a major stem) and push aside the prickly huge leaves to see what might be underneath, then take another careful step.... and eventually try to get back to the perimeter.

I think those long things are trombocinos - I got a 2 footer and put a piece in the microwave and it tastes pretty good. (I am under the impression that gourds are bitter and inedible in general) Pinetree Seeds says it should be harvested at 10" or it can grow to 3' and 6" wide.
