My smoke tree refuses to bloom. Can any of my garden friends tell me why?

Mine didn't bloom this year either. I thought it was the late frost we had.

Purple smoke trees bloom on old wood -- did you prune them last fall or this spring? Or was there winter damage so that the buds were winter-killed? (not sure about green smoke bushes)

A few neighbors change their pruning habits every few years. The leaves grown after a hard pruning are better formed and colored than if left unpruned, so some years they want good foliage, other years they want smoke!

This one has not been pruned at all. It is about 4 years old. Maybe it will bloom in the future.
