"Denouement" another poem for the end of summer

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

the season unravels
slowly in the beginning,
a yellow leaf floats down
an August breeze
the cardinal calls where
bluebirds had been
geese test out new
flight feathers, circling.
We begin to see
where the loose ends
might lead us
cooler nights, and days
slower to warm
the inevitability
of new school clothes
sneakers that wait
for varnished gym floors.
There will be hot weather yet,
a long weekend,
September is still mostly
summer, it isn't until late
that the sun
crosses the line

Love it! Observation makes the best poetry, doesn't it!
Thanks!!

What a beautiful poem. I can "sense" and even smell some of the things mentioned. I worked in a school for years and I've always thought the beginning of a new school year as a new beginning - sort of like January 1 only in the fall. I love the smell of the newly polished and waxed floors in school, etc. But....I have to admit, it always makes me a little sad too. I think that's why God made Autumn so full of such vibrant and gorgeous colors. That last blast of color just blows my mind.

Kathleen - you did it again!! Moved by the moments. I'm so happy that you are willing to share your lovely poetry with all of us. I shall copy it if you don't mind and place it in 'your file' on my desktop!! :-)

:)

I love your poetry, even though I don't look forward to the season. And your reassurement that we still have warmth to look forward to! *scattering rose petals
