DG Family Tree

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I have an old recipe file that I used to try to keep track of everyone on. I too gave up on that persuit. Too hard to try to get it all down and keep track of it.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I think it's easier to keep a text file with notes. Then you can just hit ^F (or EDIT > FIND) and type in the DG member ID of the person you're wondering about.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

This might be a good way to do the DG family tree. Each family could have a thread and each post could have a picture and say "This is X who is married to...
Next post: picture of Y who is daughter of.....
Next post: picture of Z who is cousin to ...
I got the idea from here...http://davesgarden.com/t/374971/

What do you think? Can it be done?

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I think it just might be possible NoH2O!!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

GW that would be easy for someone who knows how to do that stuff. LOL I am lucky if I remember how to get online from day to day. I AM blond you know. LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Lani - you can do it!

Open Notepad - you can do that by going to the START button and clicking RUN. Then type Notepad and hit enter. Notepad will open for you.

Just start typing and when you're ready to save it, click FILE > SAVE and name your file whatever you want to name it. It will probably default to your MY DOCUMENTS folder. When you want to open the file later for reading or updating it, double-click the MY DOCUMENTS icon on your desktop and look for your file.

When you double-click that file and open it, if you want to find a person's name in your notes, you just have to hit CTRL+F (hold control key down and tap the F key) to use the FIND function.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Well now let's see.....I am a transplant from across the pond so I am not related to anyone here except by mutual consent. I can attest to adopting some very special daughters and their children, have many 'sisters' here and a couple of 'brothers' but as for true blood, no - although I do believe that I might be a distant relative of the future if Badseed has her way....lol!! Kim I still remember those days of you and your notepad in the chat room. You were so funny!! How wise you were and are!! :-)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Actually it might be easier to start with Adam who married Eve and begat....... Yep.... I do believe I am related to all of you........ And A fine big family we are at that!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL Zany, you always seem to bring things to a final conclusion. So to all my brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren (and probably great, great greatgrandchildren) at my age, don't all of you expect to come for Christmas dinner this year!!!!! LOL
Candee

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh no! not a conclusion! That was the beginning and now we need to continue filling in the blanks along the way!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Zany; shouldn't Dave, ie "Adam", and Trish, ie "Eve", start it off??

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

No, that wouldn't work since GL was here before Dave :~)

I have an Uncle who used to say that if we had kept better records we could all trace our roots back to the Garden. But some folk would find they were direct decendants to Adam and some were decended from the Snake...He never would say which one was the root of our tree though cause the records were a bit confusing...

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

GL?? Who dat?? I like the ":~)" emoticon! Can I have yer permission to use it too zany?!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

GL is GrannyLois= Daves Mother. And I copied that emoticon off a list somewhere so please smile away anytime ! ;~}

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

GL = GrannyLois, I shoulda knowed that!! :~o

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Dave and Trish should still start it off 'cause if GL is Dave's Mother everyone knows it's a Mother's job to tell her kid what to do. And of course a loving and dutiful son will always try to please his Mother so GL just needs to crack the whip and voila! family tree with pictures. Oh I like the sound of this more and more! I wonder if Dave is tracking this with his other 1500 threads....yoo hoo, Dave, are you there?

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

This sounds a bit like "I'm My Own Grandpa" dontcha think?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

How about this...Why don't we put this blood relative stuff on our DG Member Pages? Then folks need only click on our names and they'll get the whole skinny (at least those we're willing to disclose!).

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

GW that is a really practical idea and probably easy to do too. Course it doesn't sound like as much fun as making Dave do all the work and post pictures too, but now that I think about it Dave is one of the few people who actually WORKS at DG...most of the rest of us just get to play. So I guess I should cut him some slack.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I just mean put it on our member page under "preferences" ourselves. Take a look at my member page - I just updated it to include Lotusblossom, Whiterose and Howie as my relatives. I did use HTML to link to their member pages, but just listing them would have been sufficient.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

gw; I checked out your new info and that's a great idea! The only thing I see that would be a hindrance is actually tryin to locate other family members when, as is the case with me, you have no way of knowin if they're members or not because all of your relatives are spread far and wide and out of those, only a handful may or may not have a p/c!
In the above scenario, I would have to post a message on every forum, and in every thread and ask "is anyone in here a Conner?"

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, I see what you mean. I was just saying for those who know they're related to different people, not a means of finding those who might be related.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

gw; Okay. I've been tryin to get my sisters and Mother to "get online", but to no avail! :~(

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

MaryE, I was thinkin the same thing. The song I'm My Own Grandpa really has been rolling through my mind when I read this thread. Now I know we are really related somewhere! LOL

GW, thanks for the computer lesson. Now IF I can remember all those steps and where it is I might be getting a list done up again of all the secrets that I know of people here. :>)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

MaryE, I don't know the song 'I'm my own Grandpa'. Guess I will have to look up the lyrics!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

NoH2O; when ya find the lyrics, sing us a bar or two!! ;~)
I havn't heard it either.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

You don't want me to sing it. Believe me, there would be no family tree...everybody would be dead. So to spare your life and your ears, I will just let you read it:

Songtext: Willie Nelson - I'm My Own Grandpa

Now many, many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be
This widow had a grown up daughter, had hair of red
My Father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life
My daughter was my mother 'cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy

My little baby then became the brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle, that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother

Chorus:
I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny, I know
But it really is so
For I'm my own grandpa

My father's wife then had a son that kept him on the run
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue
Because she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too

Chorus

Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

How funny!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

NW; is this Willie song on a MP3 file somewhere so's I could mite hear it? I 'spect I could look around myself and see, but I'm bein lazy today. Well...not really bein lazy cuz it's laundry day!
Bein a stay-at-home dad does have it's drawbacks ya know! :~)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi again tc! I don't even know what an MP3 file is! Is that media player? I have that on my computer but I don't know how to get it to work?? (told ya I don't know nothing about computers). I just did a song lyric search and got it from there. Sorry. Doing laundry is my favorite chore. I like it because you can lie around all day and read or watch tv or play on the computer and still have something to show for your time!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

MP3 is a compression method used for audio files. Other audio file formats include WAV, WMA (Windows Media Player) and RMA (Real Audio/RealPlayer), among others. Most media players such as RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, WinAmp, MusicMatch Jukebox, etc. play MP3 files. Let me see if it's out there somewhere to listen to - more later!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You can hear a 30-second clip of it here: http://entertainment.msn.com/album/Default.aspx?album=598177

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

NW; isn't that gw just slicker than snot on a doorknob??
I thought I knew about puters...I know squat compared to gw!

By the way, how's come you get to do all the layin around on laundry day? I still havta git out and mow, trim, pull weeds, etc., etc., plus all the other inside house chores while in between loads of laundry! ;>P

I now know why they say "a woman's (and househusband's) work is never done!!"

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I have piles of laundry to do, too...and thistles 5' high outside! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

gw; did I hear that right...5 feet high thistles!?? What kind of daggone thistle gets that tall?? One from a rain forest of the Amazons or someplace!!?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

TC everything around here gets 5 ft tall if'n you turn your back for a day. And zucchini gets 3 ft long too! LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Ones which have not been pulled when they're little, TC. Ugh. Our yard is a weedy mess - you know when things get so bad you don't even know WHERE to start anymore?

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

'Slicker than snot on a doorknob'?? Tc, where do you get this stuff??? The reason I get to lay around and play on the computer instead of mowing the lawn while I am doin' the laundry is because I do the laundry between midnight and 3am. Gotcha!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

LOL, must get it the same place Shoe gets things like "fine as frog's hair"!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

GW, or my friend says "I am Off like a dirty shirt."
