Repellents
If you must enter chigger-infested areas, chemical repellents can be used with good results. Any insect repellent containing DEET (diethyl toluamide) will be effective. It should be applied to clothing from the feet up and must be repeated every two to three hours to maintain its effectiveness. Sulphur powder is also effective when applied to the clothing but has a strong odor that makes it less desirable. Another repellent is Permanone (also sold as Coulston's Permethrin Tick Repellent). It contains the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin and should be sprayed on clothing and allowed to dry before the clothing is worn. These products are generally available at sporting goods stores and outdoor-clothing outlets.

Area control
Mowing of lawns and removing unnecessary shrubs or weeds will decrease suitable chigger habitats and is the most effective form of area control. Controlling chigger populations by spraying infested areas has limited effectiveness. However, you can spray, dust, or apply a granular pesticide if you have a chigger problem in unkept areas around your lawn. It is common to treat a 20-foot wide band as a buffer zone. There are several products labeled for chigger control, including carbaryl (Sevin), chlorpyrifos (Dursban), diazinon or cyfluthrin (Tempo). Such treatments give temporary control of only a few days or weeks depending on environmental conditions.

The only thing that works for me is nail polish. I paint clear nail polish over all the chigger bites. It cuts off their oxygen supply and they die. I still get some itchies, but not as bad.

When I was a kid, we'd go hiking in the Everglades, Chigger Heaven. The sulphur around the cuffs works but smells mightily.

to kill them once they are on you, coat with clear fingernail polish. works everytime.

If you're wanting to kill them before they bite, cover the infested area with Sulphur and Sevin Dust.

yep I have to agree with tiG, clear nail polish works everytime!! I even caught myself covered in them and was in a pinch to find nail polish...looked high and low and couldn't find the clear....So you guessed it I used pink!! LOL was so funny to see me with pink shiney spots all over my leggs but it worked! (needless to say I didn't go anywhere for a few days after that LOL)

I take a bath with a significant amount of mineral oil, enough so I can see it floating on top of the water. Be careful if you do this, because the tub will be extremely slippery. Be sure to totally submerge your body, and don't dry off with a towel but let your body air dry. If you know you are infested, do dunk your head, because they will bite there, too. Don't worry, it's good for your hair. You can rinse it all out after about 24 hours. If you have bites already, so you can locate the critters, dab some vaseline on them after your bath. Stay out of the hot sun, this much oil can actually cause a blister.

Molly, I've had to resort to pink before too:)

One thing I don't miss about living in Texas! There are no chiggers in Montana! Thank God! Lived in the Ft. Worth area for years then we moved to Mt. about 10 yrs ago. I sure don't miss chiggers, june bugs getting stuck in my hair and fire ants! But do miss all the good friends we left behind...Oh well, I always used good old clear nail polish to releave the itch of chiggers... worked every time.

Taking a bath in baking soda will work to! I got them one time picking blackberries. poured a 1/2 box in a tub of warm water. soaked till water was cold. Binky :)))))

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I have them in my yard too, and I swear by 'Chigger Rid' it may very well be, clear nail polish..it cuts off the little beasties air supply and they DIE! I am with everyone else, who says they hate those things...
