I see this georgeous plant along dividers here in Tucson, Az. The plant looks like a tree and has flowers that are georgeous. They look like purple liliacs but much larger. I have looked everywhere for these and can't find them anywhere, nor can I find any information on them. Is there anyone out there that knows about these? We cannot have liliacs in Arizona.I tried getting some seeds when they dried but didn't know how to cultivate them. I am not exactly sure this is in fact mountain laurel. The trees are about 8 to 10 feet tall.
Mountain Laurel
I believe it is the mountain laurel....

and here is a list of nurseries in that area...

Just to clarify, Sophora secundiflora is commonly referred to as "Texas Mountain Laurel" but is a very different plant from Kalmia latifolia, which is also called "Mountain Laurel".
Other plants to consider are Ceanothus or even Lagerstroemia (Crape or Crepe Myrtle)
P.S. if you go here: http://davesgarden.com/locationprefs.php you can enter your location and zone, so that you won't have to always put where you're from in your posts.
Terry that's why I posted the first link - Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) as opposed to our East Coast mountain laurel which is quite different - I have it growing in the garden.
Louisa, I know you did - I added the note for those who are skimming the text and perhaps not availing themselves of the links. I didn't want anyone to get the impression that Kalmia is growing rampantly in Arizona (*grin*)
Do people really ignore the links??? Tsk!! :-)
Thanks for all your information. I am new to this and hope I don't offend anyone with my "ignorance" as to how to follow the "rules"! Thanks for your patience.
I skimmed, and was surprised you can grow Kalmia in your climate (not). Kalmia is gorgeous here growing wild under the pines in the spring. As far as Sophora, I have tried starting those beautiful hard red seeds without success, any hints on that?
