favorite smells

One of my favorite smells is leaf mold (OK, I am odd).

And one of my favorite flowers to smell is Cimcifuga. Mine is going to bloom this year! I can't wait!!!!!!!

Oh, I love that earthy, leaf mold smell in a deep woods!

I love the smell of rain on hot ground.

honeysuckles, i'm in the process of planting loads in my garden so's I can sit out on hot evenings (if we ever get any)
freesias.
tagette foliage!!..
datura flowers.
fresh ground coffee.
my cat when he's been sat on top of the bonfire heap, it's a sort of strawy smell.
horses and stables
the sea
clematis forsteri(strong lemon smell in spring)
" montana 'Elizabeth' vanillary sort of smell
onions frying
roast cooking ( but not me cooking it!!..)
wet leaves
conifer trimmings
garlic

Turning it around, what smells do you hate?
air fresheners
stale bodies (smells like tomato soup to , so gone off that now)
tinned salmon
chemical cleaners-they make me heave
stale cat food

The way my hands smell after I've worked in the garden for a bit and washed with Boraxo - it is a very "green" smell.

the smell of photographic chemicals. I don't do darkrooms anymore, with the advent of the digital darkroom, which means I don't have to go into a tiny very claustrophobic space, but everytime I smell that particular mix of chemicals it puts me in a very creative mood.

Baking smells, almost constant here, but more fun when someone else is respocible for them!

fresh chopped corn silage. We don't do corn anymore because of allergies, but it is another green smell that gives you a feeling of acomplishment.

babies, puppies, kittens, new born calves.

That sweet smell of something, you don't know what, blooming out in a meadow or pasture and you just have to go find it.

Someone else pointed out that my Dals feet smell like Fritos. (This was after he spent a night as a guest w/Bosco) I love the smell before it rains. It's rain from nearby. My DW snips lilacs and parks them by the bed. Narcissus is added ASAP. Later the Rugosas. The summer breeze off Penobscot bay cools and sharpens it all. Bacon and coffee smell especially good when I'm still in bed. Smell ya later, Frank.

What is Dals?

I think dalmation? Or is that your dog's name? Dogs' feet DO smell like Fritos! Or popcorn, or Doritos...Just depends. It's true! I love that smell, too.

I HATE the scent of anything using "fake" scent, especially those that smell like strawberries but are actually chemically changed to smell like not-strawberries.

Hate the smell of neighbors burning ALL their trash and the smoke drifts over here. I dont know what they throw in there but it is NAHHHHSSSSTTEEEEEE!

I wonder if it is dirty diapers! We had neighbors who burned their trash too and those dirty diapes were the WORST!!

i once discovered the joys of living too close to other people....
we had neighbors burning a carpet out in their front lawn.
so of course, us having diapers out on the line we called my friend jason at the fire dept, he drove down and hosed them off.

was entertaining to say the least.

Good question GW. I'm sure alot of people don't think of this as a good smell, but I like the smell of gasoline. My Dad's a retired mechanic and I spent most of my youth in the garage. I think it must remind me of him.

I like the smell of Marlboros and I don't even smoke. It's because they remind me of alone time I got to spend with my older brother when I was younger. We still talk, but not like that anymore.

Mmmm, I like the smell of a good, spicy pipe tobacco (just a whiff, not a roomful of the smoke), but cigarettes and -- UGH -- cigars make me feel sick.

And I like Old Spice. :)

Musty un-aired houses (puke time)

Now here's a long one ... the smell inside an old canvas 4 person tent, set up on the heather in the Highlands on a very wet drizzly day ... I probably hate this smell because almost EVERY day in the Highlands was wet and drizzly ... :-(

Ah, the smell of an old canvas tent! One of my favorites, too :) Probably because of the memories.

Least favorite smell: dead fish. Never eaten fish, whenever I get close enough, the smell makes me ill.

The worst smell to me is the smell of a smoker's smoke-laden clothing in an otherwise clean smelling environment.
Ugh~

Edited to explain:
Both my beloved and greatly missed parents were heavy smokers who smoked cheap generic cigarettes and they both died of lung cancer...

than again, I'm a tobacco snob, roll my own, used to only smoke homegrown but I hardly have the time for such things anymore.

Drum tobacco... love that $3 a week habit.

Mollybee, I used to LOVE the smell of that other stuff... the sweet smell of summer, they used to call it - at outdoor concerts...

btw, deeproots, I was a pretty deep smoker myself at one time so I have been on both sides of that smelly fence, LOL

Kimberley, I know I misread when your said dog's feet smell like fritos, popcorn or doritos! Are you using these for mulch in your gardens??? Now if you would have spelled it "fritoes or doritoes" I would have understood. ;o)

Pond, go smell the 4 o'clocks when they open in the evening! They smell great then, no smell in the morning if they are still open (mine, anyway). Ditto the brugs -- they probably only smell at night.

I just thought of another favorite. Haven't smelled it in years, so I forgot. Playdoh!

Lupi, I have never grown 4 O'clocks. I am new to gardening after a hiatis of about 20 years. Someday I plan on having some of them.

Tar??? My hubby used to work for a roofing company and I started really hating that smell when he came home with his clothes wreaking. Now I only have to smell it when he has an occasional inspection job near the tarring of the roads.

deeproots in the UK we have the most road works ever!! just you try driving up the M1 or M6 and avoiding them! the smell of tar is everywhere!! LOL mmmmmmmmmmm!!

whenever I was pregnant I had a thing about cleaning with disinfectant. Just couldnt get enough of it!! used to buy it by the gallon!! :))

At the moment I love the smell of my sweetpeas ! I have them everywhere in the house. They smell so sweet.

ohhhh sweetpeas are sooo nice to smell! I have tried and tried to grow them here to no avail. It gets too hot too quickly along with the dryness of the air. Smell them for me too please?
