Strawberry Mulching

Hinsdale, MA(Zone 4a)

Hi there folks,
Do any of you have a favorite mulching material for strawberries. We have a big bed and last year tried sphagnum and didn't like it. The year before we tried some pine bark mulch and it wasn't too bad. This year they are on dirt and get a yucky taste.
Sally thinks pine spills would be best.
Any inputs welcom.
Thanks

I use straw (not hay) and it works great. Keeps the strawberries (maybe that's where they got their name?) above the dirt, allows moisture through the mulch, keeps weeds down, and eventually decomposes and enriches the soil. It is loose enough that the plants have no problem putting out runners and starting new little plants.

My granddad grew strawberries for market. We put down landscape cloth, and planted 3 rows in it, through large holes in the landscape cloth. The landscape cloth was then covered with mulch but I don't remember what kind. Might have even been sawdust. I just remember picking berries every day after school and not getting muddy. I don't think the walkways between the rows were mulched, and the beds were about 6" above the paths.

I don't grow them, but eveyone I know who does, raises the beds, and uses straw, too.
